Nicholas Tse and Sean Lau Star in “The Bullet Vanishes”

Yesterday, Sean Lau (劉青雲), Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智), Jiang Yiyan (江一燕), and Wu Gang(吳剛) attended a press conference for the period thriller film The Bullet Vanishes <消失的子彈> in Beijing. Produced by Derek Yee (爾冬陞) and directed by Lo Chi Leung (羅志良), the film follows two detectives investigating a series of bizarre murders in Republic China. To make matters worse, all the clues seem to indicate that the murderer is a young woman who was killed months before!

Sean Lau Spoils Ending?

Unveiling the film’s individual character posters at the press conference for the first time, producer Derek Yee revealed that the posters highlight the demeanor of the characters very well. Sean Lau’s  character, Detective Song Donglu, is holding a bullet with a solemn face. On the other hand, Nicholas Tse, who stars as Song’s partner Detective Guo Zhui, is hiding half of his face with a handgun.

Sean Lau laughed, “Whoever is holding the gun is the one who will betray me!” Since the film is produced by Derek Yee, who is known for his unusual twists in his stories, could Nicholas Tse be the actual murderer?

A Puzzling Mystery

According to Derek Yee, the film was originally titled Phantom Bullet <幽靈子彈>, but he later changed the title because it was too cliché. Sean Lau joked that “phantom” could be a brand, such as Phantom Watches, Phantom Engines, and also “London Olympic Games, sponsored by Phantom”! When asked if Sean Lau always cracked jokes like that on set, Derek Yee replied, “No. He’s only like that if his wife, Amy Kwok (郭藹明) is not around!”

Director Lo Chi Leung revealed that when he submitted the script to Derek Yee, it took Derek Yee over one week to give him a reply. “I originally thought he did not like my script!” He exclaimed.

Derek Yee said, “I was using that time to figure out who the killer is!” The producer admitted that it was the script that drew him into producing The Bullet Vanishes. He added, “I really like this script. I myself don’t really know how to write such intricate detective thrillers!”

Nicholas Tse and Yang Mi’s Bed Scene Cut Out

In the teaser trailer unveiled at the press conference, a topless Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒) and Yang Mi (楊冪) were seen in an intense love scene. However, the scene did not pass through mainland China’s censors, and it had to be cut.

Yang Mi was earlier rumored to have been flirting with Nicholas Tse on the set of The Bullet Vanishes, but these reports were later debunked by Yang Mi’s agency, Mei Ah Entertainment. Both Nicholas and Yang Mi were absent at the press conference.
