“The Learning Curve of a Warlord” Finale Enjoys High Ratings

The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥> completed its broadcast run on January 11. It comes as no surprise that the drama, which sees the return of Dicky Cheung (張衞健) in the lead role, is one of the highest rated series in 2018. Episode 24 saw its ratings peak to 31.8 points. To celebrate its success, Dicky, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝), Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠), and Tony Hung (洪永城) attended a celebratory event yesterday.

TVB executive, Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍), went on stage to congratulate the crew and shared that the drama was also very well received in Malaysia and Mainland China. Catherine looked over and Dicky and said, “The heart and soul of the drama is the lead actor [Dicky]. He made everyone feel his passion and motivated others to work harder in portraying their roles.”

With the drama’s success, many are curious as to whether there will be a sequel. Dicky smiled and responded, “Sometimes, a character takes only a short time to ferment and develop. Other times, it takes a long period. The theme of warlords in The Learning Curve of a Warlord, fermented and brewed in my head for nearly three years. I did not talk to anyone about it. I had to think about whether my portrayal [of a warlord] is suitable for the Dicky Cheung at this day and age. If I just winged it, then that’s easy. We could start rolling the camera in one month.”

After more than a 20-year break from Hong Kong dramas, the 53-year-old actor is happy with the results of his hard work. Not wanting to disappoint the Hong Kong audience, Dicky admitted that he often prayed for the energy needed to film and the creativity to breathe life into his role and the drama. The greatest sense of reward is seeing that his drama bring happiness and laughter to the Hong Kong audience, including his church friends. “Seeing my church friends go home to watch the drama is already the biggest reward and happiness. This is why Hong Kong people need TVB. I hope the company will continue to produce more good dramas for everyone to enjoy.”

    1. @tiffany I agree Raymond should’ve gotten a major role. However, I thought Tony was alright. It was Sisley who I was disappointed at because I’ve always liked her. For some reason, her acting just couldn’t pass for me in this period drama. Her acting was very stiff, especially in the beginning. Most times, she seemed so stagnant with her hands in her pocket just staring ahead while others were reciting their dialogue. And her costumes were TERRIBLE! Why did she have to wear such manly western clothing? Like I get that she’s portraying a strong-headed independent individual, but could’ve definitely picked something more feminine. The clothes were one of the main reasons why I was turned off by her role. Not to mention, her thin, tall stature doesn’t match with Dicky. Zoie was the best of the three wives, and even Vivien was more bearable to watch.

  1. I’m down to the final 2 episodes and am really enjoying the last one third of this drama with the unexpected plot twists. The middle part was a bit of a drag but overall this drama is really enjoyable thanks to Dick-y mostly. I liked his chemistry with the brothers especially Law Yee. I think Sisley took a few steps backwards in her acting here compared to Legal Mavericks. She looked bored at times, perhaps the role was too flat and one dimensional. She was definitely outshone by Zoie who got the more interesting role. Didn’t plan to watch this but I’m glad I did and Dick-y certainly deserved best actor 100x more than Joe Ma.
