Joel Chan, Natalie Tong Start Training for Jazz Boon’s “Chinatown”

Jazz Boon’s (文偉鴻) upcoming television drama for TVB, Chinatown <唐人街>, has already begun production, and it’s going to be a feast for the eyes. Produced by the same crew behind 2016’s A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄> and The Unholy Alliance <同盟>, Chinatown tells the story of a band of martial artists living in 1960’s Bangkok Chinatown. Principal photography has already started in Hong Kong, and production is expected to move to Thailand soon.

Chinatown stars Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Grace Wong (王君馨), Philip Ng (伍允龍), Yuen Qiu (元秋), Jimmy Au (歐瑞偉), Jazz Lam (林子善), Joel Chan (陳山聰), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), and Ngo Ka-nin (敖嘉年), along with new cast members Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) and Tiffany Lau (劉穎璇). The Unholy Alliance stars Joel Chan and Elaine Yiu will reunite as a couple.

Joel, who has been training with martial arts actor Ken Lo (盧惠光), shared that his character in Chinatown will be an expert in Wing Chun and Muay Thai. Elaine, on the other hand, is a mixed martial arts fighter specializing in weapons. “The style of fighting is very different from my character in The Unholy Alliance,” she said. “Here, I am from the Emei Sect, specializing in the Emeici.”

Though Chinatown is not Natalie Tong’s first kung fu-themed production, she will be playing a martial artist—a first in her career. “My character specializes in the Baguazhang,” she shared. “Kwok sifu has been very careful and kind with me, but it’s hard work. I never did kung fu before. The rest of the cast have experience because they’ve done at least one or two, while this is my first time.”

Nonetheless, Natalie said she has been enjoying her training. She also learned a lot about her own body’s endurance and strength. “My legs are actually very weak, so I have to be careful with my balance.” Natalie has not sustained any injuries thus far, but a few bruises here and there are “unavoidable.”

Similar to her character in A Fist Within Four Walls, Grace Wong plays a character who is skilled in the Bajiquan. Although she doesn’t have to start from scratch anymore, training for the role has been just as difficult as the first time.

  1. I only see one name that I am interested in. Philip Ng (伍允龍) lol…haha I also like Tiffany Lau. Phillip & her were the only two that I like in that Fist Fight series. All the other characters were so boring esp that girl that was paired up w/Vincent Wong. But then Philip Ng’s acting in FF was horrible. All yelling and not much acting. He should just talk less and fight thru out the series. LOL haha…. I didn’t get the hype w/that Ruco series either as I only find Grace Wong & Philip Ng’s fighting worthwhile all the others were boring. 😀

  2. Natalie in a fighting series very interesting………..but wny Grace and Phillip these 2 really annoy me especially Phillip he cant act AT ALL stone cold blank look for all the expression and the way he talks

  3. I like a lot of these actors. Interested in seeing Ruco and Grace, I thought they had sparks even though they were brother/sister in AFWFW. I am very hesitant with Natalie. Hopefully she will improve, but she is not believable as a fighter. And please, I hope she isn’t paired with Ruco.

Joel and Elaine are good. I like the beauty of Phillip’s moves. Jimmy Au is always fun. Big cast.

  4. I’m sure everybody’s hoping that this new series will live up to the AFWFW hype, especially with mostly the same cast. They did so well in viewership and awards, and they all deserved what they got… Ruco, Grace, Ben, Phillip were great, I didn’t love Nancy but overall it was a strong cast. I’m sure the additions Elaine, Natalie, Joel will make it great.
