Kara Wai Open to Returning for a “The Defected” Prequel

As Hong Kong’s highest-rated television program of the year, TVB’s The Defected <鐵探> has every reason to celebrate. Reaching 33 rating points in Hong Kong and snagging an international distribution deal with Netflix, The Defected was meant to be a hit.

“I said I’ll wear stockings over my head if the show reaches 33 points,” said main star Kara Wai (惠英紅) at the celebratory banquet. “What luck. I should’ve said 36 points instead.”

Some of the cast members, including Kara, Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪), and Philip Keung (姜皓文), had promised fans and the media that they would go out in public wearing stockings over their heads if the drama reached 33 points.

And they delivered that promise. Benjamin went out to buy a bubble tea drink while wearing a fishnet stocking over his face, and Kara, wearing her own blue stockings, went to buy bread at a convenience store.

“There is significance to it,” explained Kara. “I bought that pair myself. It cost over a thousand dollars. I wanted to wear them for the Golden Horse Awards, but it didn’t work out. I thought about black, and also red, but in the end I decided to go with the blue. As long as people are having a good laugh!”

Due to the success of The Defected, TVB has been in discussion to greenlight a prequel. In regard to this, Kara said, “I don’t mind cutting my pay for it.”

At the mention that her good friend and fellow costar Benz Hui (許紹雄) is in the midst of his own sex scandal, Kara said, “I can’t say I’m 100 percent sure, but I am 90 percent sure that those texts weren’t from him! I text him privately all the time, and I don’t recognize that user number. (He said he felt he got raped online.) That’s not bad for someone his age! He is a very positive person. He’ll get upset, but then he’ll get over it.”

Benjamin Yuen Wants a Comedic Version

Benjamin was excited to hear about a prequel in consideration, and suggested that TVB should consider making the prequel a sitcom. He joked, “We can all travel overseas, like to Cheung Chau. It’ll be like going on vacation.”

Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) commented, “If it’s a prequel, then I’ll be out of a job! Wouldn’t it be around the time when Mat Yeung (楊明) and I were still kids?”

Having lost over 20 pounds for the role, Benjamin has been slowly regaining his weight, and is also working on building even more muscle. He explained that the training is for Line Walker 3 <使徒行者3>, which he will start filming in August.

Sisley, who will also be in Line Walker 3, said, “I’m grateful that I get to join the family. I don’t know what my character is yet. All I know is that it’ll be shot in Hong Kong. Right now, I’m trying to grow out my hair, but I’m prepared to chop it off again if it’s necessary.”
