Jessica Hsuan’s Strong Principles Made Others See Her as a Troublemaker

Since Jessica Hsuan’s (宣萱) is always busy filming for movies, commercials, and dramas, the 48-year-old actress rarely even has time to check her phone. Since signing with Louis Koo‘s (古天樂) company, Jessica has struck a good work-life balance while exploring new opportunities.

Exciting Disneyland Collaboration

Jessica joined the Marvel team playing the role of an engineer for the new attraction “Ant Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle!” at Hong Kong Disneyland.  A big Marvel fan who has seen all the movies and even the reruns on television, Jessica enthused, “I like Iron Man because he is so cool, but I really love Captain America because of his loyalty and leadership. When he believes in something, he will hold onto it tight and even make the sacrifice. He also never gives up!”

Though she didn’t get to meet Chris Evans, she was very grateful she had the opportunity to meet Paul Rudd who plays Ant Man. When she met Paul, she felt very nervous. However, Paul was very welcoming and down-to-earth.

Becoming a Strong Asian Female

Jessica believes that she must face every challenge with Captain America’s mentality. She wants to be a strong independent woman and developed those traits at a very young age.

Jessica recalled moving to London to study at the age of 13. During that time, she would stand up to bullies which teachers thought to be a brave move since she was a minority student.

Known to embody strong independent female characters, Jessica’s trademark roles include A Step into the Past <尋秦記> and  My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人>.

Her father, whom she likens to Captain America due to his unwavering principles, had a big influence on Jessica’s values. When she was a child, she visited her father at work. She remembers a time when she took a pen from his office and he immediately told her to give it back. She learned a very important lesson about never holding onto things that were never hers to begin with.

With such strong influences in her life, Jessica shared that her mentality to do what’s right can also offend others who regard her as being a troublemaker. In 2002, while filming Square Pegs <戇夫成龍>, things were being stolen from cast members including Jessica. Angered by the incident, Jessica called the police and spoke about before the press. What she regarded as the right measure to take was seen as causing trouble by others.

However, after many years in the entertainment industry, Jessica has learned how to compromise and be the best version of herself.

  1. I think trouble maker is the wrong word to describe her. She should be described as uptight.

      1. @msxie0714 Yea, I agree, though unfortunately, that’s how the industry works. I remember Jessica also had a fallout with some production company while she was filming in the Mainland, as they were trying to jip her of her filming fee (which sadly is a common occurrence over there) — she stood up to them and got her money, but of course they badmouthed her as being a diva and troublemaker, which probably affected some future opportunities in Mainland. Wong He is another artist with similar personality (direct, uncompromising, sticks to his principles) who also gets labeled a troublemaker. I guess the industry doesn’t like people who are honest and direct and refuses to “go with the flow”…sad!

  2. The nail that sticks out gets pounded down – a very common attitude in east Asian countries of China, Japan, Korea.
