Introducing the 16 Semifinalists for 2020 Miss Hong Kong Pageant

The 2020 Miss Hong Kong Pageant is well under way, and the 16 semifinalists went public for the first time on Thursday, July 23 to have their first formal greeting with the press. The girls wore matching white tops and blue jeans.

According to MHK tradition, one to two semifinalists would get booted out during the overseas segments for the show. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is unlikely that the pageant will go international due to traveling restrictions. TVB has not announced details of this year’s preliminary disqualification round yet.

Adhering to social distancing and sanitation protocols, the organizers prepared a sanitation center for all press. Reporters interviewed the candidates with a clear board between them. While taking group photos, the girls kept a distance from each other as a safety precaution.

  1. I’ve been following this pageant pretty closely since the preliminary interviews and this is my take on it:

    1. Amber Chan – cute face but doesn’t seem to answer well. Needs to think before she speaks more. Lacks grace. Will not place.
    2. Uki Law – cute and reminds me of Gigi Leung. But her overall demeanor is a bit too chill and lacks sophistication. Will not place.
    3. Sonia Leung – cannot stand this girl and her smiling with her mouth slightly open. Someone needs to tell her to stop doing that. Her Q&A is ok. Her actions are a bit too posed like she is always smiling for IG pics or something. Not refined. Will not place.
    4. Kelly Lin – cute but too rehearsed. Because she is already a host on some program, her talking does not sound authentic. Will get relatively far in the pageant. May place top 4.
    5. Jessica Liu – overall best winning combination in terms of outward appearance, overall demeanor, and confidence. Will place top 3.
    6. Ceci Mak – slightly above average in looks. Not enough to win. Very forgettable. Will not place.
    7. Rosanna Tsz – youngest contestant and honestly, VERY average in looks. Kinda looks like a younger version of Marianne Chan. Answers well. Needs braces lol, sorry. At least get that fixed before going on this pageant. A bit harsh but that’s reality. And try again in a few years when she’s grown up a bit. Will not place. Eliminated early.
    8. Yancy Wong – most mature. Nice demeanor. But her looks aren’t pretty enough to win. MAY have a chance as the dark horse but highly doubtful.
    9. Casa Yuen – lacks confidence. This girl is too apprehensive and shy. Surprised she is even in the pageant. Will not place. Eliminated early.
    10. Charmaine Fan – Average looking, very forgettable. Kind of like Ceci Mak. Both forgettable. And worse of all, she can’t walk in heels. OMG. Poor girl. Either something is wrong with her legs or she doesn’t know how to walk in high heels based on the latest video. Someone help her please. Anyway, will not place. Eliminated early.
    11. Celina Harto – needs to quit her day job and go be a model. She got the looks and the body of a model. Even her attitude seems very cool and edgy. Will not win the pageant. Will not place.
    12. Michelle Hau – don’t know why people find this girl so attractive. Sorry, I don’t see it at all. She responds well to questions but honestly, she is not that attractive. Nice body but very average face. Her mouth is her most unattractive feature. Will get pretty far in competition, but will not place.
    13. Roxanne Ho – cute but this girl comes across as SO FAKE. Her smile is fake. Everything about her seems so calculating. When she stands next to her competitors, the way she acts is so insincere, and she looks a bit condescending. May get far in competition if the judges don’t feel this way about her. She responds well to questions and her look is cute. Will not win 1st place. May place 3rd.
    14. Rosita Kwok – stands out the most in terms of looks. Most attractive. Nice sweet personality as well. Most likely to win Miss Photogenic. Should place top 3, and very good chance at winning the crown. Her biggest downfall is her speaking skill. That may hold her back from 1st place but should still place top 3 for sure, unless she messes up royally, which is highly unlikely.
    15. Maisie Kwong – very forgettable. Reminds me of Bernice Liu in terms of looks but honestly she is very average looking. Not memorable. Will not place. Will be eliminated early.
    16. Ivy Lai – why did she say there is a lot of buzz and news about her? She is very average. Probably the least attractive of the bunch. Will not place. Eliminated early.

Overall, I guess my top 3 are Rosita Kwok, Jessica Liu, and Roxanne Ho or Kelly Lin, for first, second, and third, respectively. Should be interesting to see if there are any overseas candidates added in the mix.

    1. @gnomageddon
Uki Law – her chill personality is a plus since her looks arent above the rest of the contestants.
Sonia Leung – agree that she wont place.
Kelly Lin – I dont think she stands out that much compared to the rest.
Jessica Liu – she will definitely make it to the finals, but not sure if she will be placed top 3.
Rosanna Tsz – Youngest contestant & confident. Her features are great! I think she is the second prettiest after Rosita Kwok.
Yancy Wong – looks like a mix of Samantha Ko & Mandy Cho.
Casa Yuen – Agree that she is SO shy. People say she is very cute & pure though. So let’s see if she makes it…
Celina Harto – She is gorgeous! Why do you think she wont be placed in top 3?
Michelle Hau – I totally agree with you that she’s pretty, but not super pretty. She seems nice & takes criticism well, which is a good trait to have for the industry. In the 1st interview, people said she had too much makeup on, so she put less for 2nd interview. And then some people commented that her teeth werent white, so she said she’ll make sure to whiten them for next time.
Roxanne Ho – I have nothing against her personality. She seems pretty sweet from the interviews. She is a popular candidate & has a lot of supporters, so she might actually win 1st place. She responds well to questions. In past MHKs, the winners are well-spoken. That’s why the candidates who are the most attractive dont win because they dont speak well, such as Kelly Ng & Sara Ting.
Rosita Kwok – Agree that she is the prettiest, but might not win because of speaking skills. She has a lot of supporters though, so TVB will definitely place her in top 3.
Ivy Lai – Apparently, she was on the news for partying with rich men. I agree that she is the least attractive contestant.

The overseas candidate (med student) is very pretty & might be placed in top 3.

      1. @luye I agree with you about Kelly Lin. I’m really on the fence about her. Her looks are decent. Her personality… again, her biggest downfall might be sounding too much like a host or too rehearsed. Not authentic enough. It could play to her advantage if she displays it right, but so far, I think it’s a disadvantage. So that’s why I think she’ll make top 4. Maybe place 4th or 5th. I know I put her or Roxanne Ho in possible 3rd, but upon further thinking, Roxanne would beat Kelly if Kelly can’t change her emcee demeanor. In regards to Celina Harto, I don’t think she has the traditional appeal of a Miss HK winner. Her personality lacks charm because she is so cool and aloof. I think MHK will be a good platform for her to launch into a modeling career though if she so chooses. I’m surprised Ivy Lai partied with rich men considering her looks seem to be so average. Maybe she’s really flirty in real life? Who knows.
