Contrary to “Queen of Tears,” Kim Ji Won Calls Herself “Boring” in Real Life

Kim Ji Won is receiving a lot of love due to the popularity of Queen of Tears. Her beauty, natural acting, and domineering presence as Hong Hae In, CEO of a department store and member of a chaebol family has become the audience’s favorite character lately.

Ratings reached a high of 18.95 percent and Queen of Tears became tvn’s second highest-rated drama after Crash Landing on You. Many commercials and television stations are now fighting to work with the actress.

In Queen of Tears, Kim Ji Won falls in love with Kim Soo Hyun, who willingly married into her family. After marriage, the pair drift apart due to miscommunication until one day she is diagnosed with cancer and they start to realize how much they love each other.

Sharing Hong Hae In is currently her most favorite character, the actress said, “Although she is very cold, you’ll realize she’s quite cute if you watch closely. Most importantly, she is someone who understands humor.” In preparation for filming, Kim Ji Won attended a specialized chaebol training course. She also maintained a strict diet during filming which lasted a year in order to wear the beautiful custom-made outfits. In eight episodes alone, she changed 82 outfits and each one became a hot topic. She joked, “I originally thought I only liked wearing comfortable clothes but after wearing beautiful and cool clothing often in the drama, I realized I really enjoy them!”

Kim Ji Won entered the industry as a commercial model at 18 years old. In 2013, she had her first break in The Heirs as rich girl Rachel Yoo. Afterwards, she starred in Descendants of the Sun and Arthdal Chronicles which were great successes. Last year, she starred in My Liberation Notes as an introverted office worker who wanted to escape her mundane life, a role which earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

When asked to rate her own acting, Kim Ji Won humbly replied that at her worst, she would give herself 20 points and at her best, she would rate herself 50 points. “After today, I’ll keep saying it’s 50 points. I’ll always try to fill in the rest of the 50 points through my new works. After I complete the job, my feeling of satisfaction and regrets are usually the same.”

When not filming dramas, Kim Ji Won seemed to disappear from the public eye as she does not update her Instagram more than a few times a year. With such a personality, it was hard to keep herself relevant in the media. She frankly stated she does not have any big future plans and only hopes to enjoy life. She is already satisfied when she hears fans tell her they enjoy watching her act.

However, My Liberation Notes’ character resembles Kim Ji Won’s real-life personality. She usually keeps quiet and enjoys spacing out by herself. Her friends joked her life was as boring as a documentary. “When I was 30, I encountered this character and I felt I was being healed while filming. After broadcast, many audiences resonated with her way of thinking and she is the character representative of my life.”

  1. I had no idea there was such a thing as a “chaebol training” course… I think she’s a really good actress even before Queen of Tears. I’m glad she’s getting more notice nowadays!

    1. Curious about the course. Chaebols are families mega conglomerates with generations of wealth, wouldn’t they know everything that they need to rather than going for courses?

    2. It is common…Royal training also happens in many Countries.. I would hate such training…Remember the drama Princess Hours- Goong? Eun hye Yun character had to undergo training too.
