Benz Hui Passes Away from Kidney Cancer
Hong Kong actor Benz Hui (許紹雄), 76, passed away on October 28. Suffering from kidney cancer, he had multiple organ failure and was hospitalized in the intense care unit this week. He is survived by his wife Angeli Lung (龍嬿而) and daughter Charmaine Hui (許惠菁).
In the entertainment industry for over half a century, Benz had worked at Commercial Radio Hong Kong prior to joining TVB as an actor. With his range in acting skills, Benz won Best Supporting Actor at the 19th Hong Kong Film Awards. He was credited in starring in 165 films.
Benz was known for his excellent relationships with colleagues. His goddaughter, Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), rushed back to Hong Kong from Macau to visit him as well. Although Charmaine had to fly to Beijing the next day for work, she spoke with the press about Benz’s passing. She said, “He was an actor whom I respect very much. I have known him for a long time. He also portrayed my father several times. He was very professional every time he filmed, but also very happy and optimistic on the set. He loved his family very much. He worked very hard to earn money and provide for his family. Although he is gone now, we should continue to pass on his positive and optimistic character. Although it is very sad, we must also move forward positively because I know that he must want us to live happily, as he was happy every day too. So Dad, although I miss you, I will not cry anymore. I will think of you and remember you as a happy soul. I will take care of your family.”
Gallen Lo (羅嘉良) and Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) were heartbroken to see their longtime costar pass away. Gallen said “I’m so sad. May he rest in peace. There is no illness in heaven!” Wayne reflected on their time together, “Benz Gor’s passing was very sudden. It’s so regretful. We all know Benz’s acting was unique and gave so many wonderful roles to audiences. We worked together in many TVB dramas and Mainland commercials together. Each time I saw him, Benz looked very happy. We got along very well. My condolences to his family.”
From afternoon to evening, many celebrities arrived at the hospital to visit him yesterday. Earlier, Chow Yun Fat (周潤發), Michael Miu (苗僑偉) and his wife Jaime Chik (戚美珍), Luisa Maria Letao (黎芷珊), TVB producers Jazz Boon (文偉鴻) and Lam Chi Wah (林志華) were seen arriving. Around 4 p.m., Dayo Wong (黃子華), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) and his wife Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), Ben Wong (黃智賢), and Bosco Wong (黃宗澤). They all entered the hospital quickly without speaking to the press.
Last night, more celebrities arrived at the hospital. Their hearts were heavy as Benz was wearing an oxygen mask and in critical condition. Alice Fung (馮素波) revealed that Benz could hear her words even though he could not respond. Friends who also visited included: Raymond Wong (黃浩然) and his wife; Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪); Emily Kwan (關寶慧); Jazz Lam (林子善); Eileen Yeow (姚瑩瑩); Raymond Lam (林峯); Ron Ng (吳卓羲); Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘) and his wife Stephanie Ho (何雁詩); Sammy Sum (沈震軒); Law Lok Lam (羅樂林); Roger Kwok (郭晉安); and Patrick Tam (譚耀文).
Benz’s family thanked their friends for accompanying the actor on his last journey. Details for the funeral will be announced at a later time.

He was one of my fave kelefes. RIP Benz.
His death caught me by surprised. He only recently moved back to HK since living in SG for many years. I am sure he is glad to be back in HK on his final journey. He was surrounded by close friends just before he passed.
For those almost reaching 40 and grew up watching TVB, we are going to experience this a lot for years to come.
