Eric Tsang Bows Out of TVB General Manager Post
Featured on the recent episode of interview program One Week of Stars <一周星星>, guest Eric Tsang (曾志偉), who was recently honored with the “Lifetime Achievement – Glory of Stars” award at the TVB Anniversary Awards 2025 <萬千星輝頒獎典禮2025>, shares his candid feelings, regrets and reflections on his 5-year tenure!
Gains and Losses During His Five-Year Term
Earlier, TVB announced that Eric will step down from his current role as General Manager (Program Content Operations), and take on a new position as Convenor of a newly established Advisory Committee, with effect from 21 January 2026. In this role, he will be responsible for providing the Board of Directors with advice on new program content and strategic direction, continuing to drive the development of TVB’s content ecosystem.
As news of him stepping down as General Manager sparked widespread public discussion, One Week of Stars inviting close friends from the industry and his daughter-in-law Venus Wong (王敏奕), to take turns sharing heartfelt and honest thoughts with him.
Never Thought He’d Be This Useless
Promotional clips from the program highlighted highly engaging content. Speaking on behalf of netizens, host Maria Luisa Leitao (黎芷珊) asked, “Many people wonder why you decided to step down as General Manager at this point in time,” Tsang responded frankly, saying, “Five years is too long for me,” and admitted that the role came with immense pressure. “Sometimes I want to say something, but with your position, you just can’t. We’re a listed company – it’s really tough. It doesn’t feel like me at all.” He added self-deprecatingly, “I never thought I’d be this useless – it took me five years to get to this stage. I thought I could sort things out in three years, but this cruise ship is just too big – it’s like an aircraft carrier.”
Tsang also revealed that his children had long wanted him to step down. “They’ve been thinking about it for ages — they even threatened me, asking, ‘Haven’t you done enough yet?!’ Once kids grow up, they’re fiercer than you,” he joked.
Turning Losses Into Profits: Spending Less
Speaking openly without reservation, Tsang also admitted that there was one thing he had hoped to accomplish during his five-year tenure but ultimately did not, which he described as his biggest regret – to be revealed on coming Sunday’s (October 2) program.
He also spoke about the changes he went through over his five year tenure, and asked for understanding where he had faced criticism. “People ask, ‘Why is it like this?’ Well, when there’s no money and you have to be frugal, some problems are bound to come up – please bear with us.” He added, “If you want to turn losses into profits, cutting back on spending is one of the ways,”
Tsang further revealed that when Midlife, Sing & Shine! <中年好聲音> was first planned, he never imagined it would achieve such success. “I never expected the response to be this huge,” he said, adding that even the naming of the programme came with a small backstory. To find out what it was, viewers are encouraged to tune in to One Week of Stars this Sunday night.
