Feng Xiaogang’s (馮小剛) historical film, Back to 1942 <一九四二> ,was the big winner at the 22nd Golden Rooster Awards ceremony held in Wuhan. Back to 1942 also won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Recording. There were double winners in the Best Actor category, acknowledging Zhang Guoli’s  (張國立) performance in Back to 1942 and Huang Xiaoming’s (黃曉明) performance in American Dreams in China <中國合伙人>.

In his acceptance speech, Huang Xiaoming said, “Didn’t think that I would be standing on stage to get this prize. But I believe in hard work. My motto is: I am not the best but I have put in my best effort,” and borrowing a line from Stephen Chow (周星馳), he added, “I am a good actor!”

Zhang Guoli thanked director Feng Xiaogang and while he enjoyed awards when he was younger, Guoli now appreciates the diverse roles that he portrays.

American Dreams in China also helped Hong Kong director Peter Chan (陳可辛) win the Best Director award. While the host joked that Peter always has the luck of the golden rooster–referring to the girlfriend Sandra Ng’s (吴君如) success with Golden Chicken <金雞>–Peter was modest in his directorial win over Feng Xiaogang. Peter likened his film to fast food when compared to the historical details of Back to 1942.

Chinese actress, Song Jia’s (宋佳) Best Actress award was a surprise win for Falling Flowers <蕭紅> star, as she beat hot favorite Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) . Song Jia said, “Today’s panel is the best. Even if they have wrongly given me such a big pie, I will help myself to it.”

Vicki Zhao (趙薇) was presented the Directorial Debut Award for So Young <致我們終將逝去的青春>. Expressing her thanks, Vicki was happy when she received a mysterious love letter that was presented to her on stage. She kissed the lips of host Jing Wei (經緯) to show the impulsiveness of youth. The award may be a recognition of Vicki’s status as a director, but she is still not satisfied with her performance as an actress and  intends to spend more time honing her acting skills.

Wang Qingxiang (王慶祥) won Best Supporting Actor for The Grandmaster <一代宗師> , while Wang Luodan (王珞丹) won the Best Supporting Actress for Caught in the Web <搜索>.

With the absence of many big stars, like Best Actress nominee Zhang Ziyi some say that the Golden Rooster award is slowly losing its prestige.
