Reversing previous criticism of his “oily” acting, Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明)’s refined performance in recent drama Alliance <好事成雙> earned praise, though his comments in a recent interview about being “abandoned after helping someone” raised speculation that he was ranting about ex-wife Angelababy (杨颖)!

Ending their seven-year-long marriage in 2022, Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy’s careers are taking very different turns. Changing viewer impressions of his acting with roles in Nirvana in Fire II <琅琊榜之風起長林> and Winter Begonia <鬢邊不是海棠紅>, Huang Xiaoming’s career has been on the upswing as he garnered momentum with well-received dramas and frequent charitable work, amid rumors with influencer Chloe Ye Ke (葉珂).

Recently interviewed while promoting Alliance, the 45 year-old was sharing snippets of his less glorious past, when he described how “sometimes you meet some people who received your help, yet after succeeding they felt that all the credit is theirs and even deny that you ever helped (them), these words when repeated become really unbearable to hear, and after long you become a ‘Làn Hǎorén​’ (Chinese expression describing someone who suffers for being too kind),”

Though he did not mention names, Huang Xiaoming’s words were widely interpreted by netizens to be him taking potshots at ex-wife Angelababy, whose career rise was helped by his wide network of connections. Debuting as a model in 2003, Angelababy knew Huang Xiaoming from a karaoke party in 2009 and met with his parents at his hometown in Qingdao two years later, making their romance public shortly thereafter. Attaining A-lister status with help from his wide network in showbiz, the two tied the knot in an extravagant wedding in 2015 and welcomed their son “Little Sponge” in 2017.

Unlike Huang Xiaoming, Angelababy’s career took a turn for the worse as she was removed from recent publicity photos of her long-time variety program Keep Running <奔跑吧兄弟> – a far cry from her high-profile presence earlier. Not only did her dramas Twilight <暮色心約> and Divine Destiny <塵緣> suffer from poor ratings, she was also demoted to just a guest-star for her co-starring role in the drama Back For You <漫影尋蹤>, despite being paired with rising actor Wang Anyu (王安宇).

Things took a turn for the worse when Angelababy was spotted at the entrance of BLACKPINK Lisa‘s Crazy Horse Paris cabaret performance, while also attending Paris Fashion Week. Despite Crazy Horse Paris denying her attendance of the event, the actress was labeled a high-risk celebrity and is facing signs of cancellation by C-entertainment, as her recorded video was removed from a mid-autumn performance for state television, on top of rumors that all her commercial endorsements will have to be inspected by major networks.

While Huang Xiaoming’s co-star in Alliance, Jenny Zhang (張嘉倪) similarly got canceled for attending the cabaret show and subsequently had her name dropped, the drama’s release remains unaffected.

Netizens also commented on Huang Xiaoming’s unusual move of pixelating the wall of his Qingdao home in a photo he shared of a golden week festive gathering, even though the hidden b photos of “Little Sponge” had already been revealed in previous photos he uploaded. They conjectured that it might be because Angelababy had expressed her aversion to frequently sharing of their child’s photos on social media.
