Angelababy’s New Drama “Everlasting Longing” Gains Buzz

Hoping to rebuild her career with the airing of historical drama Everlasting Longing <相思令>, actress Angelababy <楊穎> looks to be one step closer to making a complete comeback, with the drama gaining momentum despite controversies.

Comeback Amid Challenges: Angelababy’s Fanbase Lend Support

Despite receiving mixed reviews and trailing behind other hit dramas like Yang Zi‘s (楊紫) Flourished Peony <國色芳華> and Bai Lu‘s (白鹿) Moonlight Mystique <白月梵星>, the show has maintained a spot in the top five on popularity charts, with its related Weibo hashtags have garnered over 5 billion reads, proving Angelababy’s appeal.

Following her soft ban after attending the Crazy Horse cabaret show in Paris in end 2023, Angelababy has taken a cautious approach to promotion. Recently, her drama Everlasting Longing successfully aired, though her team has been treading carefully, making only one promotional post during the premiere. Tencent, the streaming platform, also avoided significant promotion, choosing a low-profile release to minimize financial risk.

Despite these, Everlasting Longing debuted with higher buzz than Yang Zi’s critically acclaimed Flourished Peony. While reviews have been polarized, with Angelababy’s acting once again raising debate, her loyal fanbase has demonstrated high engagement, ensuring that her influence and commercial value remain strong.

Its special effects and post-production have drawn criticism, with scenes filmed in the desert appearing overly synthetic. Despite these setbacks, Angelababy’s performance in Everlasting Longing shows noticeable improvement. Once criticized for “wide-eyed” acting style, viewers acknowledged the actress’s subtler micro-expressions; the natural pairing between her and Song Weilong, who is 10 years younger, also highlights her visual charm.

In her final pre-ban drama, Back For You <漫影尋蹤>, which co-stars Wang Anyu from The Last Immortal <神隱>, Angelababy portrays an older woman-younger man relationship. Her stunning visuals already generated strong buzz. The drama’s reported finalizing of its release schedule is significant – signaling Angelababy’s complete comeback, while paving the way for a potential return to Keep Running <奔跑吧>, the variety show she was dropped from after being a host for 10 years,
