Tang Wei Stars in Ann Hui’s “Golden Age”

Golden Age <黄金时代>, an upcoming Chinese film directed by award-winning Hong Kong director, Ann Hui (許鞍華), is currently actively filming in Wuhan, China. With a screenplay helmed by Li Qiang (李樯), Golden Age is a biopic of the tragic life of Xiao Hong, a prominent Chinese female writer of the 1930s.

Starring Tang Wei (湯唯) as Xiao Hong, the film will also star William Feng (冯绍峰) as her first lover, Xiao Jun.

The film will transcend two short decades of Xiao Hong’s life. Starting off in Harbin in the early 1930s, Xiao Hong will make her way to Chongqing, Wuhan, and finally to Hong Kong, where she will die a painful death in the midst of the chaotic Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1942. Xiao Hong’s love life will also be the film’s central topic.

An actor who will portray Xiao Hong’s second lover and husband, Duanmu Hongliang, is yet to be confirmed. However, rumors are centering on 31-year-old Zhu Yawen (朱亞文) to portray Duanmu, as the actor was seen at the filming studio.

Ann Hui has kept the film under tight wraps since its October 2012 principal photography. Despite the low-key filming, a conspicuous runaway scene was filmed in Wuhan yesterday morning. Ann, who is known for her slow filming style, took the entire day to film only three camera shots. Netizens who witnessed the Wuhan filming praised Tang Wei’s professionalism and beauty. A male fan exclaimed, “Tang Wei was walking back and forth in front of me! I’ve seen her face, hands, and legs up close. No need to get jealous.”

Another fan gushed, “I was within three meters of Tang Wei! She was resting in her chair. She has a small face, but her skin isn’t doing too well. Being an actor is stressful indeed! A simple shot can take an entire day to film. I heard a crew member say that filming in the -30 degrees Celcius weather in Harbin is nothing compared to filming in Wuhan. Wuhan is considered heaven!”
