Summer Releases Häagen-Dazs Theme Song, “Spoonful”

The Voice of China <中国好声音> star Summer (吉克隽逸) is back again with another soulful sensation, but this time, the 24-year-old singer is returning with another iconic rendition of the Howlin’ Wolf classic, “Spoonful.”

The sixties blues standard was chosen to be the theme song for Häagen-Dazs’ latest string of international advertisements, and Summer was called to endorse the ice cream brand for the mainland China region. The English-language complementary single was digitally released on May 2. Since its release, “Spoonful” has become a hit in online music portals.

“On the surface, this song sounds very free and unrestrained, but it actually has elements of conserving and modesty,” said Summer. “The song gives me a feeling of… captivation.”

“Spoonful” was written by American blues musician William Dixon and was first recorded by Howlin’ Wolf in 1960. In 1995, the song landed on the 219 spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also added “Spoonful” in their list of 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

“I wanted the song to be mature, sexy, and also comfortable,” said producer Yuan Wai Jan (袁惟仁). “This contradicts the style of Summer’s singing, but she managed to grasp that concept really well.”

Although the English lyrics to “Spoonful” are quite simple, Summer expressed that spent days trying to perfect her enunciation and singing style. “I am not unfamiliar with the English language, but I have to admit singing ‘Spoonful’ was quite challenging. I’ve become a master of tongues,” Summer laughed.

  1. I love her. She’s got a strong voice and I love how she doesn’t try to blend in and make herself look more pale.
