“Voice of China” Li Daimo Receives 9-Month Prison Sentence for Drug Offense

On May 27, the Chaoyang District People’s Court  in Beijing sentenced mainland Chinese singer Li Daimo (李代沫), who rose to fame after appearing on the first season of the pop singing competition The Voice of China <中国好声音>, to nine months in prison over a drug-related offense that occurred in March 2014. In addition to prison, he was was also fined 2,000 RMB.

According to the court, Li Daimo pleaded guilty to the charges and did not file an appeal. The court considered Li Daimo’s total cooperation with the authorities and also immediate confession, which resulted in the lighter sentence.

In Li Daimo’s concluding statement, he said, “I’ve acknowledged my mistakes, and I really regret it. As a public figure my duty was to pass on positive energy to society, but yet I had committed such a terrible crime. I extremely regret it. I hope the court will give me one last chance. I’m sorry to my parents, who have raised me, and sorry to those who have helped me. I’m sorry to all my friends and fans. During my detention I was educated and helped by the judicial authorities, and now I long to return to society. I especially hope to be able to return to the stage. I’m sure that I will be able to achieve this through my own hard work.”

Between February and March 2014, Li Daimo allowed three other people, surnamed Lu, Zheng, and Hao, to use drugs at his rented home in downtown Beijing. On March 17, Li and the involved persons were arrested; Li was charged for two misdemeanors: using drugs and harboring drug users at his home.

Defendants Lu, Zheng, and Hao had proclaimed in court that the methamphetamine substances were supplied by Li Daimo, but the singer refuted their claims and said the drugs came from Lu.

Li Daimo’s lawyer, Wu Liwei (吴立伟), stated that Li Daimo desires to stand on stage again and hopes to start over once his sentence is completed.

Despite Li Daimo’s troubles with the law, media reports say that Li Daimo’s career is far from over. Various sources have claimed that Li Daimo is currently sought out by many stage organizers and that he already has over thirty stage performances lined up in his schedule after his release from prison. Li Daimo’s management, Bravo Entertainment, also released a statement supporting the singer.

  1. Congratulations on ruining your own life but looking at the report it seems it really doesn’t matter. What does it take to ruin a career these days?

    1. Funn,
I think Li Daimo’s career is over. There will be media interest after he finishes his prison sentence, but there are other upcoming singers that may be more heavily promoted due to more positive image.

    2. Not much really. Especially when there are still fans out there who idolize such irresponsible celebrities that think they can get away with such acts by using money to solve the problem. Don’t forget those greedy businesses that will continue to support and endorse him just so they can make a few bucks.

      1. DramaAddict,
In Hong Kong, past celebrity drug users such as Kelvin Kwan, Jill Vidal, and Deep Ng’s careers were over after drug scandals. I think Mainland China will be even less forgiving towards drug use scandals.

Li Daimo was only at the start of his career when the drug scandal began. The Mainland market is much larger than Hong Kong and there are new talents lining up, especially with the popularity of reality music shows now.

  2. he should move to us. celebs only get rehab and community service for this type of offense.
