Synopsis (Warning!!! Spoilers Ahead!!)

The Kam family manufactured gold but the family found themselves financially unstable due to a fraudulent scheme. As a result, Tuo Luk (Moses Chan) had to marry Princess Chiu Yeung (Charmaine Sheh) to save their business. She married him because she did not want to marry another prince. The couple does not get along and are constantly bickering.

Chiu Yeung moves into the Kam’s household along with her servant Ngan Ping (Fala Chen). There are many rules and routines which the Kam family must follow. Chiu Yeung and her sisters are always competing against each other and the other princesses have tight control over their husbands.

Tuo Sao (Raymond Wong) returns from Shaolin and the family has great hopes for him to become a great soldier. However, Princess Chiu Yeung revealed that he cannot fight and shattered the family’s dreams. Grandma was very annoyed with the Princess and hit her head.

Not only is Chiu Yeung not getting along with the Kam family, she is also having problems with her other four sisters. Chiu Yeung invited the other princesses to her home but they were joking about Chiu Yeung causing Tuo Luk to accidently hit them on purpose.

The three Kam brothers found Ah Sei (Linda Chung) who ate a lot and was really strong. They took her home and she became a servant. Chiu Yeung dropped a gold accessory which was picked up by Yuk. She placed the accessory in Ah Sei’s basket which was knocked over. Ah Sei was suspected of stealing the accessory and was imprisoned. Tuo Sao was sent to fight Ngan Ping to save Ah sei but injured his arm. Ngan Ping on the other hand also suffered from injuries and was almost dying. However, Ah Sei saved Ngan Ping since she knew about the illness. Chiu Yeung releases Ah Sei and allows Ah Sei to become a servant in both the Kam household and the Princess’ home.

The Kam family’s  gold business begins to suffer since Loi Hei (Susanna Kwan) and cousin Ding Choi Wang (Lee Kwok Lun) has opened a new gold business. Ding Choi Wong and his wife, Mai Yan Chi (Mary Hon), had a son Yau Wei (Kenneth Ma) who was a matchmaker.

Ngan Ping wanted to find a husband and visits a matchmaker with Ah Sei. The matchmaker found Yau Wei who decided to go undercover because he heard that the match maker was dodgy. The people running the matchmaking business were arrested and Ngan Ping and Ah Sei had to be witnesses. However, Big Princess (Sharon Chan) and the other princesses arrested Ngan Ping for breaking rules. Chiu Yeung tried to save Ngan Ping by saying that the other princesses have also broken imperial rules. They were all punished.

The other princesses continue to dislike Chui Yeung. Big Princess set up a trap against Tuo Luk and to make it appear as if he had visited a brothel. Chui Yeung decides to divorce Tuo Luk. The other princesses have a bet that they will divorce. However, Chui Yeung can not get permission to divorce so decides to remain married. This shocked Tuo Luk who just decided to stay with the princess since he has no other choice. Chui Yeung persuaded Tuo Luk to join schooling for the other princesses’ husbands. Tuo Luk discovers that the men are tortured there and he decides to speak out and tell the emperor. He complained to the emperor for spoiling the princesses. The emperor admired Tuo Luk for being truthful and said that all the princesses should treat their husbands with respect. Second, Fourth and Fifth princess realised that the emperor favoured Chiu Yeung and they became nice to her. Big Princess became enraged. She paid Cho Kiu (Elaine Yiu) to seduce Tuo Luk and break up Tuo Luk and Chui Yeung’s relationship. Cho Kiu failed her task and Big Princess sent an assassin to kill her. Chui Yeung knew this was a scheme and revealed it to the emperor. The emperor was disappointed in Big Princess who then lost her royal status as a punishment. She became a commoner and had to be looked after.

Chui Yeung and the Kam family are getting along better and she even has dinner with the family.

Yan Chi was kidnapped by her servant. Yau Wei and Choi Wong had no money so they went to the Kam family and asked to borrow money. Hei refused to lend the money because she believed that the person who did it was nearby and they might kill Yan Chi. They planned a scheme but Hei also got herself kidnapped along with Choi Wong. The three people were reunited and resolved their previous problems. Luckily, they were rescued by Tuo Luk. The two families resolved their issues and left the past behind them.

Tuo Sao is starting to have feelings for Ah Sei and she is feeling the same. However, Hei finds that Hei’s status is too low and wants to accept her as a daughter instead. Ah Sei pretends that she does not like Tuo Sau and really hurt him.

Meanwhile, Ding Choi Wong’s cousin had returned and wants to find a wife for Yau Wai. His mother does not want him to marry somebody and got him and Ngan Ping to pretend to be a couple. However, they develop feelings for each other. Yau Wei discovered that his parents were not really his real parents. To keep this secret from his mother, he had to marry another girl and pretend that he has never liked Ngan Ping. This really hurt Ngan Ping but when Yau Wai explained everything, she accepted it.

Tuo Fuk wants to run the Kam’s business and wanted to become the keyholder. As a result, there was disagreement between him and the rest of the family. Hei decided to leave him in charge of the business and he constantly needed Tuo Sau’s help. The workers did not get along with him. During a drinking session, Tuo Fuk lost his keys. They managed to find the thief. Tuo Fuk wanted to return the keys and felt guilty about the arguments. Hei left the keys with him and said they will support him.

Concubine Wei had always disliked Chui Yeung. She sent an assassin to attack herself and then told the emperor that Chui Yeung wanted to kill her. She told the emperor that Chui Yeung was not his daughter but Ah Sei was the real princess. She claimed that Chui Yeung wanted concubine Wei killed in order to hide the secret. Chui Yeung was imprisoned and Ah Sei was taken to the palace. Ngan Ping tries to clear Chui Yeung’s name and investigates the case. She was badly injured and was rescued by Yau Wei. The two decides to get married. However, Ngan Ping was captured and also imprisoned. The Kam family were all suppose to face the death penalty for being related to Chui Yeung. However, Ah Sei convinced the emperor to release them. Tuo Luk wants to die with his wife and he was imprisoned. The emperor knows that Chui Yeung would not harm Empress Wei. He finds someone to admit to the crime. Chui Yeung and everyone were released but Chui Yeung was no longer a princess. She became a normal civilian called Yeung Chui.

Yau Wei and Ngan Ping are to become a couple but their destiny clashes. Yan Chi does not want him to marry Ngan Ping. She was then saved by Ngan Ping and agrees to allow them to marry. Yau Wei’s real father was a judge who later discovers the truth. He tries to seek revenge on Yau Wei’s parents and envied them. However, it turned out that he was working for somebody.

Grandma Kam has become very ill and is suffering from dementia. She gets things confused and mix up people’s names. Yuk discovers that she is pregnant.

Ah Sei is in the palace and misses Tuo Sau. Concubine Wei forbids Ah Sei from doing different things and was very harsh towards her. Ah Sei then discovers that many servants were dying and that she was not really a princess. She wanted to tell the emperor but he was not in the palace. She pretended to hate Tuo Sau and sends him away from the palace causing him to be really upset.

Concubine Wei wants Chui Yeung dead. She sends an assassin to poison Chui Yeung. Chui Yeung was poisoned and dies. Ah Sei tells the emperor that Chiu Yeung was really the princess and she is now dead because of Concubine Wei. Concubine Wei denied killing Chiu Yeung and said that Ah Sei cannot prove anything. Ah Sei said she can and Chui Yeung walks in. Concubine Wei is defeated and admitted everything. She tried to kill Chui Yeung but ended up killing herself.

Chui Yeung and Ah Sei switched places. Nevertheless, the emperor still likes Ah Sei and treats her as a princess.

Chui Yeung sees Fifth princess (Charmaine Li) arguing with her husband. They split up and Chui Yeung tries to have a word with her but she got annoyed with Chui Yeung. However, their relationship was repaired when Chui Yeung helped prevent her from marrying somebody far away. All the princesses then became very close.

Yu Man Kit (Vincent Wong) had pretended to like Ah Sei but was really plotting to overturn the throne. Yu Man Kit was hoping to cause rivalry between the emperor and the other tribe. Yau Wei’s father was working for Yu Man Kit and this was discovered by Yau Wei one evening. Yau Wei learnt that he was of a different race.

Tuo Luk was asked to take care of some goods but problems arose. Since he had failed his duties, he had to die along with the rest of the family. Chui Yeung was told by the Fifth Princess that Tuo Luk was going to be killed. Chui Yeung rushed to the Kam family’s house and slapped Hei just as the guards appeared. She divorced Tuo Luk and no longer had any relations with the family.

Chui Yeung immediately requested to see the emperor who refused to see her. The other princesses joined her. The emperor said that Tuo Luk must die. He ordered the guards to keep Chui Yeung away.

The Kam family had to drink poisoned wine and they all collapsed. Chui Yeung managed to escape with the help of the princesses. She managed to see Tuo Luk before he collapsed.

At night, Chui Yeung went to see the emperor who explained the reason for the death. Chui Yeung and Ah Sei was out and caused trouble. They noticed that wedding goods were being delivered despite Ah Sei explaining to Yu Man Kit that the wedding should be cancelled. The two went to see Yu Man and Chui Yeung noticed a letter being half burnt. Yu Man noticed that they have discovered something. He kidnapped them.

Yu Man was going to attack the emperor but he was arrested. The emperor walked out with Tuo Luk. Yu Man said that although he has failed, Chui Yeung and Ah Sei were going to die anyway. He killed himself refusing to say where he has hidden them.

Chui Yeung and Ah Sei were hidden in an old building. Chui Yeung told Ah Sei that the Kam family were still alive and it was just a scheme to catch Yu Man.

Tuo Luk and the emperor tries to find Chui Yeung. Tuo Luk went to a forest and found paper messages thrown out by Chui Yeung. They managed to find the girls.

The three couples, Chui Yeung and Tuo Luk, Tuo Sau and Ah sei and Yau Wei and Ngan Ping all got married together. They had children and the family’s gold business was expanding.

CAST AND COMMENT

Charmaine Sheh as Princess Chui Yeung

Her character was quite annoying at the start since she was so demanding and nasty to the Kam family. However, I started to like her character. Charmaine delivered good crying skills but I find that she has trouble holding her laughter.

Moses Chan as Tuo Sau

He did a great job here as Tuo Luk and was very funny. He had may long scripts and managed to say them all.

Fala Chen as Ngan Ping

She looked really pretty in this series and really liked her in this series. Her Cantonese has improved so much.

Raymond Wong as Tuo Sau

I am not really a fan of his acting but he was funny in this series. I realised that he does have comedy skills too. However, I did not find any chemistry between him and Linda.

Linda Chung as Ah Sei

Her character was well played too but found her voice rather annoying sometimes.

Kara Hui as Concubine Wei

This lady was EVIL and was pretty scary. She delivered a very memorable performance.

AWARDS

Best female character: Chui Yeung (Charmaine Sheh)

Best Male Character: Tuo Luk (Moses Chan)

Prettiest Princess: Fourth Princess (Yoyo Chen)

Best Princess pairing: Sharon Chan and Edwin Siu

Prettiest Female: Fala Chen, Selena LI

Most Evil: Concubine Wei (Kara Hui)

Funniest Character: Kam Tuo Fuk (Louis Yuen), Ding Choi Wong (Lee Kwok Lun).

Overall

A very good series. Not the best series and I found it a bit too draggy and boring at times. When it got funny it was really funny but when it’s sad, it is really sad. I found that it was a slight replica of Pearl Princess: the evil empress and a princess who was taken to the palace and a mix up between the princesses. Actually one of the poems cited in the series was in Pearl Princess too. However, one of the best series this year in terms of ratings.

  1. Why does concubine Wei hate Chiu Yeung so much?

She’s a beloved concubine. I don’t get why she would hate Chiu Yeung so much that she would risk her own life to harm Chiu Yeung. Chiu Yeung’s position as a princess does not threaten her position as a beloved concubine at all.

  2. i saw the ad for this series and the plot seemed completly to the actual plot? like did they decide to change it last minute?
    :-S

  3. i saw the ad for this series and the plot seemed completly to the actual plot? like did they decide to change it last minute?

  4. Kidd, to answer your question:

The emperor often compared Chiu Yeung’s mother with Concubine Wei. When Emperor learn that Chiu Yeung mother died, he took it out on Concubine Wei (which is why she hate tongyuen). When Concubine Wei had a difficult birth, the Emperor was busy heading off to Tian Ping village to personally fetch Chiu Yeung back to the palace. He also did not visit her, despite her being bedridden for months afterward.

  5. Thanks sehseh for you info. Now, I can understand her hatred. The fault of the heartless emperor.

  6. I did not find this series funny at all and too exaggerated. I stopped watching after 10 esp.

  7. I stopped watching after ep 3. Found it really boring and the humor felt forced

  8. I liked Linda’s character in the beginning but then after a while she turned sooo annoying!her voice and her naive acting made me dislike her lol! Love linda but not in this drama! not the best ending though whatever happened to Sharons character? i just remember she went crazy

  9. i love linda.. but in this series when she had that “cute/innocent” voice it was kinda unnatrual and annoying.. i liked if she just used her “normal voice” .. i liked when linda became a princess… she had some pretty good scenes there.

  10. Linda was horrible in this one. Moses too.

Basically I didn’t like this at all. BUT Susanna was a joy to watch. Charmaine and Fala are not too bad too.

  11. The plot seems to be lacking on something. And by the way TOO MANY BLOOPERS on props, costumes & etcs.

Don’t they edit and have quality control. This is not the 1st Siu Cheng Jie series that has the blunder.

Rewatch Forensic Heroes 1 & 2, BTROC and all the series produce by her.

  12. I agree, this series was just horrible with terrible over-acting by most of the cast. I’m not sure if any of you guys realised, but the storyline of CBML is almost identical to Colourful Life (2001) also by Siu Cheng Jie the only difference was that Colourful Life was quite funny and memorable. Both had commoners marrying princesses they did not want to for the sake of their families. They both had family disputes due to in fighting for wealth and power. Both families nearly got executed due to a plot by foreign spies. I know i’m nitpicking but it’s still cheating when you reuse your own plots.. but then again, that’s TVB for you..

  13. On the review…
You give 4.5 stars out of 5. I really disagree. The drama was awful. Horrible acting on all cast. The plot was not even interesting. The effects was too unnecessary to make “funny”.

Please dont tell me this is the new TVB comedy series standard?

Dont recommend to people watch this crap, there were lots of negative comments on this series. Im surprise no major news reports show it was really crappy series. TVB must have lied on the TV ratings.

  14. Yeah, agree with those who said this is one crapy series. Shudder to think that this is the new tvb comedy series standard. The whole cast overacted, and the story was totally unfunny.

  15. I don’t see this series is that good,,, so typical and happy ending,, but I don’t like the ending part,, when the princess daughter with a young boy,, at the age of 4 and she talking about liking a guy and will find him in the future is way too wrongggggg

why 4 years old?,,, she got pregnant on the wedding day,,and 5 years later,,, I assumed the girl is 4

  16. This series is definitely not a series for awards… it seemed like it was just the kind of series “yea whatever, blah”

  17. TBH this series is OTT. Most of the cast went OTT.

Linda and Moses are horrible in their acting.

Charmaine, Fala and Susanna saves the series.

  18. I would love it if ratings = awards = recognition = quality work. The truth is it isn’t always that case not just in HK but every where else.

  19. wow?! 4.5/5 for this series? then the rest of the dramas like AFOS can get 20/5 already!

this is really a very stupid drama. pity the cast. their time could have been more well-spent and utilised.

  20. Just a 2.5 – 3.0 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

It was funny but I felt like it was just a bunch of laugh here and there and not much of a story.

With such a stellar cast, I expected better but I guess the audience in HK really loved this series. It’s sad that it broke some of the all-time high records. In my books, War of Genders is the best comedy series ever! No one knew Dayo Wong and Dodo Cheng could have such great chemistry.

  21. After watching the whole series my comment is the same as everyone who commented b4 me… series= not much of a storyline
Chemistry wise i felt nothing between Raymond and Linda =.=
btw wth happened to Sharon and Edwin I was expecting them to reappear and show a happy end or something but they just vanished from the series completely
I was looking foward to Selena Li in this series but it really just dissappointed me her role didn’t really give her a chance to show her improved acting >.<

The only reason i continued is that i hate not finishing a series after i watched a few episodes plus i was hoping it would get better which it didnt

It had too much events where they make u expect one thing to happen but another happens instead
(like they make u think fala will betray Charmaine but she doesnt, they make u think that Elaine dies but she doesnt,
they make u think the Kam family dies but they dont…
a twist to the event is good but too many just makes it seem like they're trying to make it different from previous series but it just had a reverse effect

  22. If you are looking for an improved acting from Selena, you should watch A Fistful Of Stances. She actually did a pretty good job.

I’m a little bothered by her “breathe-less” speaking, the airy thing she does. I know she can’t help it but it’s something that annoys me. I still love her though. She’s been great in almost every series I watched her in. Heh.

  23. I rated the series 4.5 because that is the standard of this series so far this year. I found that there has not been many good series this year and this series was fairly good to watch compared to the rest that I have seen. Note: when i rate series it is not a series that is rated compared to previous series. It is based on series that are seen this year and whether it is worth watching this year.

  24. Out of topic but this is what I get from the Jaynestars index page:

“Review of TVB Series “Can’t Buy Me Love” , featuring Charmaine Sheh, Moses Chan, Fala Chen, and Linus Chung

LOL cracked..Linus Chung is purely a fictional character. I know anyway that it’s supposed to be Linda Chung haha.

On CBML, no comment. Not my cup of tea 🙂

  25. Masaharu, thanks for pointing out the “Linus Chung” typo. I corrected it. It is getting late… need to catch some ZZZs 🙂

  26. This is a crap production. Plot has no continuity.
    Acting was exaggerated. In short,
it doesn’t deserve the 4.5 stars rating even in comparison with other serials this yr.

  27. agree that this series doesn’t deserve the 4.5 stars rating even when it is compared to this year’s series. CBML is a very frivolous show. pity the cast who could have been better utilised. i think miu siu ching should stay away from making dramas for the time being. her dramas are getting from bad to worse (think btroc and cbml). i don’t even feel like watching FH3 even though i love wayne.

  28. The only thing I like about this stupid series is the theme song by Susanna and the costumes.

  29. “i think miu siu ching should stay away from making dramas for the time being. her dramas are getting from bad to worse (think btroc and cbml). i don’t even feel like watching FH3 even though i love wayne”.

Yup, she should DO A POST MORTEM. FH2 was a blunder. You could see so many bloopers like when the patologist is dong an autopsy one can partically see the persons eyes blink & the movement of the chest & etcs. Cases are WAY TO SIMPLE TO SOLVE. Goodness, please do not insult intelligence of hard core CSI fans.

  30. I read this expecting a ‘review’ in the university sense of the term, not expecting the primary school sense of the term. However I realised after several seconds later you can’t really critically review this series since it was ummmm crap.

However I do applaud the fact Colly took the time and effort to summarize the events in this series because really what a mess it was… Thanks to other people commenting here now I know why I also hated Forensic Heroes.

A Fistful of Stances was far superior to this and i hate Kevin Cheng… that says a lot about CBML.

  31. ok, now that i browsed some of the other ‘reviews’ i realise that it was your, Colly as resident reviewer here on TVB series, intent and style to mainly summarise the series of interest and provide a brief opinion on the characters etc. So apologies for my previous message.

But to ask ever so kindly, could you add more opinion and less summary next time? For an extremely pointless series like CBML, a summary was quite unnecessary. In foresight of you reviewing No Regrets- there’s too much story to summarize since fifty thousand things happen each episode so less summary more evaluation!

  32. It’s her review, she can rate it, summarise it, opine it in anyway she wants even if I disagree with the rating. But like she said, she is rating this series as against other series released this year. And if this is the 4 and a half stars rating for a series this year I shudder to think of other series.

My rating for my reviews is far simpler. A series as against itself.

  33. I’m sure Colly wants feedback on not just our view of the series but also areas of improvement.

  34. I think we should respect Colly view on the serie. Different people may rate differently. I like it so I may agree with her. If u ask me how i rate No Regrets, I will only rate it as average as I don’t like this type of serie.

  35. SDS: it is pure coincidence but Iv been thinking the same thing and have changed the review structure cause its so hard 2 remember every detail in series. Stay tuned!

  36. I think we should respect Colly view on the serie. Different people may rate differently. I like it so I may agree with her. If u ask me how i rate No Regrets, I will only rate it as average as I don’t like this type of serie

Yes :). Reviews are most of the time subjective and based on preference.

  37. I don’t understand how this series got such high ratings and viewer-ship when it was so completely horrible. A comedy…really??? Then why didn’t I laugh once or see anyone else laughing while watching it. Sure it was pretty and looked very expensive but I think they should have allocated more money for the script rather than pure eye candy. The worst part about it is, as horrible as it is it will still probably win many TVB Anniversary Awards. Kudos to television monopoly.

  38. To Tempest: Maybe your taste is different. My niece and I laughed our heads off. I can’t expect others will have the same reaction because our taste are different.

  39. Hey, I respect opinions on a series, that’s why I want to hear more of it as I suggested. I enjoy it when people pick apart TVB series- its a decadent delight. But also, once a while there are pretty good series/actors/scenes/stories etc.

Actually Colly, I was very very surprised you remembered so much of CBML. Definitely deserve applauds on that.

  40. All: anyone watched [the just finished] Every Move You Make? anyone notice how ridiculous the series plot is?

Anyone who knows a bit about behavioral psychology, criminal prosecution or forensic psychology would have good unintended laughs… ahhhhh… reality is a miss again.

  41. Jenny, despite your opinion about the series it still doesn’t take away from the fact that the majority of opinions think this series is lacking. It’s not a matter of different taste, it’s a matter of having taste. The standard of storyline and script has been brought down and fluffed up with eye candy. If you enjoyed it good for you, as for me I’m merely stating what I think about the series.

  42. Implying that others have no taste because they don’t have the same taste as you is just low and elitist.

  43. Quid pro quo. I wasn’t the first one to isolate anyone’s opinion and direct a retort to anyone. I stated what I thought about the series and received a disagreeing response. I was of the understanding that we were expressing our thoughts about this series. If you throw response like that at me, don’t complain about the consequences.

  44. @Tempest, what kind of responses did Jenny “throw” at you? You act like she was attacking your opinion. All she said was that people have different tastes and that she enjoyed the series. You are the one that act as if the majority opinion is better than the minority. Just because a lot of people didn’t like it does not mean people who do like it have no taste. You’re the only one being aggressive here. You act like Jenny said something totally offensive to you that warrants a bad “consequence.” Quid pro quo? Being rude to someone who wasn’t being rude is not quid pro quo.

  45. I think you should read things carefully or rather pay more attention. Jenny isolated my comment and responded by trivializing how I felt about the series and defending her opinion of how she liked it. As I understand it and it’s been said before several comments above that we should be allowed to give our feedback about this series without disputing one another’s opinion. I haven’t singled out anyone’s opinion and retorted, I think I should be allowed the same courtesy. If she had just said what she said without referring to me that’s fine. But she made a direct reference to my statement and made a defensive statement towards my comment. I’d take that as being rude, when it’s supposed to be a “let’s share what we think of this…” topic.

  46. Messages are oftentimes misunderstood over the internet.

It was an innocent mistake. I suggest we drop it and move on to the CBML review.

Sorry if i came off authoritative, my intentions were only to remove the tension. Thanks!

  47. I don’t see anything wrong with quoting someone and disagree and then throw own opinion as long as not in attacking manner.

NR and GMG is heaps better than CBML. What a shame if Moses win this year with this series. I want Felix to win.

  48. I don’t think Jenny meant to offend you with her comment. She just mentioned she had different taste than you. She thought it was funny, and you didn’t. A big majority of us on this forum didn’t think this was a good series nor was it funny at all. It’s that simple. She didn’t expect you to feel the same way as she respects that everyone has different viewpoints as stated in the other comments. It’s ok to differ in opinions, but it’s not appropriate to say someone doesn’t have taste because their opinions differ from yours. “Your taste is different” is not the same as “you have no taste.” If you felt that your opinion was isolated, it happens all the time on this forum. Many times on this forum, people comment on the previous posters’ response. They can put that person’s name directly to let that person know they are elaborating on what they said or disagreeing with what they said, or they can quote what was written by that person, and either elaborate on it if they agree or why they disagree. It’s happened to almost all posters on this forum- to me, to Jayne, to all the frequent posters here. But we don’t have to personally attack those people back by using inappropriate comments like they need to “use their brain” or “have no taste” kind of comments.
