Ethan Ruan On Estranged Relationship With Father: “ I Never Want To Be Like Him”

Taiwanese actor Ethan Ruan (阮經天) has had an award-winning film and television career, but despite winning the screens, he has won little in his private life.

The 38-year-old rarely talks about his private life, because to him, there really is nothing much to talk about. But in a recent episode of Chinese talk show Nian Nian Tao Hua Yuan <念念桃花源>, Ethan opened up about his estranged relationship with his father after guest star Yue Yunpeng (岳雲鵬) shared that he is mourning over the loss of his father.

“To be honest, my father and I are not close,” said Ethan. “I never want to become a person like my father, but I’m finding that I am start to resemble him more and more. There’s a shadow of him in me, and I hate that.”

For as long as he could remember, Ethan’s father used a “very wrong” method to express his love for Ethan and his family. Because of this, Ethan never wanted to become him, or even be associated with him. Out of filial piety, Ethan wanted to speak to him or do something for him, but because of their distant and estranged relationship, none of it came into fruition.

“For kids who never found ways to make peace with their parents, I feel like you never end up growing up and becoming adults. But I feel that now, it’s time. It’s time for me to be an adult.”
