Fans Didn’t Recognize Raymond Lam in “The Legends of Monkey King”

Playing the titular character in The Legends of Monkey King <大泼猴>, fans didn’t recognize Raymond Lam (林峯) when he first showed up on in set in full makeup. The actor wore colored contacts, sharp ears, and had hair sticking out all over his face.

Wearing a costume that weighed 10 kg (22 lbs) on hot summer days, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride for Raymond. Before work, the actor had to spent four hours in the makeup chair. To prevent hyperthermia, Raymond had a fan on him at all times.

This role as “The Monkey” is definitely a new challenge for Raymond. He said, “I am not playing the Great Sage of Heaven, nor am I playing Sun Wukong. I am just a monkey, so I am much darker, and much more cruel. I feel like I’m crazy. The makeup I’m wearing now is considered normal. It gets much darker and fearful in the end.”

The Legends of Monkey King, produced by Cenic Media, is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Jiayu Bushi Gui (甲鱼不是龟). It is a loose origin story based on the legend of Sun Wukong, about an ordinary mortal man who travels back in time and ends up as a monkey, born from a stone, and the Prince of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. Jiang Mengjie (蒋梦婕), Kenji Wu (吳克群), and Jin Akanishi (赤西仁) also star.
