Former EEG Artiste Mandy Chiang Admits Lesbian Past

Former EEG artiste Mandy Chiang (蔣雅文) admitted in a recent Facebook post that she had a relationship with a woman in the past. “I went through two relationships. One was with a woman. Another was with a man,” Mandy wrote.

The 31-year-old former idol star, who debuted as a member of the girl group 3T in 2002, retired from the Hong Kong music scene in 2009 to focus on the business of her own clothing line and brand in Taiwan. Mandy has been living in Taipei ever since, but she would occasionally give her fans lifestyle updates on her official Facebook.

Mandy’s sexuality has always been a mystery, even during her days as an idol singer in Hong Kong. She never talked about her past relationships in public, and when she was attacked with lesbian rumors, Mandy never cleared them up.

On March 26, Mandy suddenly changed her relationships status on Facebook, revealing her new romance to the public. Her current boyfriend has his own fashion brand and is described by netizens to physically resemble John Tsang (曾俊華), the current Financial Secretary of Hong Kong.

Mandy’s relationship revelation generated a lot of buzz among Hong Kong netizens, and many got into deep discussions about her past relationships, bringing up her lesbian rumors once again. The Hong Kong media also reported about it, and there has been gossip that Mandy was attempting to cover up her lesbian past by publicizing a fake relationship.

Surprised by the unforeseen attention that she was receiving, Mandy posted a statement on her Facebook on April 1, to clarify her rumors and put an end to further speculation. In her statement, she expressed that she did not expect to see such a heated response to her Facebook status update, revealing that several Hong Kong magazines had already contacted her to do overseas interviews.

“Seeing this result, I am at a loss,” said Mandy. “I did not expect to get [a response] of this scale after publicizing it. However, what I am worried about is not because I’ve managed to get everyone’s attention, but because I am scared that I may have unintentionally hurt someone else.”

Mandy said that her “accidental” relationship status reveal on Facebook made her unable to sleep for the past two nights, worrying that her update may come with more misunderstandings.

Mandy admitted in her statement, “In the years I have been living in Taiwan, I went through two relationships. One was with a woman. Another is with a man [current boyfriend]. I knew she has always wanted to make our relationship public when we were still together, but I was young, spirited, and my personality was a bit rebellious. I didn’t think I needed to justify [myself] to society. Our relationship was our business. Was there a need to have everyone to criticize and judge us?”

Mandy revealed that she broke up with her ex-girlfriend over a year ago, and implied that the breakup was not completely amicable. “We are now leading our own new lives, and I thought we would be able to just continue on with our ways, but after what happened several days ago, and thinking that my unintentional actions may have brought her second-degree harm, I think it’s time for me to come out and say something. I am not doing this for society, but for myself. This is my responsibility, which is a part of growing and a personal integrity. More importantly, I am doing this because I respect her. She is my life’s most important family member and friend. I thank her for sacrificing so much for me, and I thank her family for taking care of me. I sincerely thank you.”

Mandy did not reveal the identity of her former lover, and urged everyone to give her ex-girlfriend respect and not ask her who she was. Mandy also stated that she would not accept any interviews from the media.

Mandy’s statements had garnered wide support from netizens, who praised her for being courageous. As her statement was posted on April 1, some netizens wondered if it was Mandy’s idea of an April Fool’s joke, which Mandy denied.

“Who I am today is due to the things and people who have appeared in my life. Not knowing respect or being thankful is not any different from exploiting others. A person is not an object. You cannot just throw it away if you decide to not want it one day and leave it at that. [You] should accept responsibility and not avoid it. They say that only the one who holds your hand now matters. I do not think that this potentially destructive love deserves to be valued.”

    3. The article clearly states that she denied it was an April Fool’s prank. And she may/may not have dated Don Li. Her reference to her first relationship being with a female only takes into account the people she’s dated since moving to Taiwan.

  2. So her first relationship was a lesbian one. And only recently ended too.

    1. It wasn’t her first relationship in her entire life. It was her first relationship after moving to Taiwan.

  3. never really hear of her until now…she has abit of similar look of gillian chung babyface… anyway glad she is doing well in her business and also her bf is another businessman like her…so they are matched..

  4. In brief, she is a bisexual woman, but is label really important???

    1. Yeah there is a big difference between a lesbian and a bisexual. A lesbian only likes women but a bisexual likes both men and women. Maybe a guy likes her and she likes him but think she is a lesbian he doesnt try to make move.
