Hundreds of Fans Mourn Over Godfrey Gao’s Passing

On November 27, Taiwanese Canadian actor Godfrey Gao (高以翔) collapsed on the set of the Chinese variety show Chase Me <追我吧>. After attempts to resuscitate him for nearly three hours, the 35-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The sudden, devastating death of the younger actor broke waves across the Internet. On November 29, hundreds of fans from all over China, including Hangzhou and Shanghai, arrived at a location near the Chase Me set in Ningbo to remember the actor. They decorated the spot with flowers, picture frames, and wrote down things they wanted to say to the actor in post-it notes. Many fans broke down, crying.

Godfrey’s body has been moved to a local funeral home. According to reports, his family has not decided if his body would be cremated. Nonetheless, it is planned for Godfrey’s remains to be returned to Taiwan soon.

Looking gaunt and wearing a black mask, Godfrey’s father tearfully responded to questions by the press. He said, “What a pity. It’s really a pity.” On asking when Godfrey’s body would be returned to Taiwan, he said, “We have a time, but we cannot say it yet. You have all worked hard. (How are you now?) I’m still okay. Thank you.”

One thousand chrysanthemums were sent to the funeral home in memory of Godfrey. The actor’s official Weibo account stated, “One thousand chrysanthemums were given by the support of fans. Everyone’s regards were sent. Thank you for your warm. We will never say goodbye. You will always be here, and we will always be here with you.”
