Jackson Yee’s “A Little Red Flower” Tops Box Office

While the global box office has been hit hard by the pandemic, Chinese theaters are recovering. The Chinese box office raked in 600 million yuan on New Year’s Day, setting a record high and surpassing 2018’s New Year day earnings of CNY 357 million.

Among the top-performing films was A Little Red Flower <送你一朵小紅花> starring Jackson Yee (易烊千璽) of TFBoys, which was released on New Year’s Eve. The film centers on real-life issues faced by two families battling cancer, and invites viewers’ to cherish life and everyday experiences. Its total earnings have already reached CNY 492 million so far.

Taking second place is Warm Hug <溫暖的抱抱> starring popular Chinese actress Li Qin (李沁), which was released on the same day as A Little Red Flower. The film took in CNY 160 million and has grossed CNY 355 million since premiering. A romantic comedy adapted from 2014 Korean film The Plan Man, it is about a man fixated on planning out every detail of his life to the second, whose meticulous plans are disrupted by a woman he meets.

According to national figures, the box office raked in CNY 20.3 billion in the year 2020, with the top 10 films being local productions, which took in over CNY 12 billion, about 60 percent of earnings for the entire year. The most-watched film of the year was war film The Eighth Hundred <八佰> starring Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明), which single-handedly grossed CNY 3.1 billion, edging out My People, My Homeland <我和我的家鄉> which trailed closely behind at CNY 1.8 billion.
