Joyce Tang Updates Her Health Condition: “I Broke 5 Ribs”

On December 28, 2019, Joyce Tang (滕麗名) sustained a serious injury while skiing in Japan, and had to be hospitalized for over two weeks. She returned to Hong Kong in late January.

Returning to work for her sitcom series Lo and Behold <愛.回家之開心速遞> today since her trip, Joyce reassured reporters that she feels fine and is “mostly recovered.” She shared that she fell down a few steps after tripping on wet ice, breaking five ribs, in which two had multiple fractures.

It was a very serious injury. “A displaced rib punctured my lung leading to internal bleeding,” shared Joyce. “I was still bleeding two days after the surgery. The bleeding added more pressure to my lungs and caused my lungs to shrink. For a while I didn’t even have enough air to speak. My husband had to help me relay messages.”

To treat the bleeding, doctors had to install a tube through a throat and suction it out. “Any movement gave extreme pain. It was so painful that I cried. I never experienced that before.”

Joyce had originally planned on flying back to Hong Kong after her hospital discharge, but to reduce the chances of her lungs getting infected while on the plane, they recommended her to stay in Japan one more week. Joyce rested at a hotel, and her husband flew back and forth from Hong Kong to Japan to run errands for her.

“My respiratory function is affected due to the bleeding, so I’ve been seeing a therapist to treat it,” said Joyce. “I still feel pain when I lie down. I can’t turn my body for at least a month. The doctor said it would take at least six months for the broken ribs to properly heal. It’ll take another year before I can exercise.”

Originally scheduled to begin work later, Joyce had to move up her filming schedule due to Lau Dan (劉丹) feeling ill. She shared, “He’s been sick with a fever, and coughing.”
