Kara Wai Speaks About Being an Independent Woman

In the drama, The Defected <鐵探>, Kara Wai (惠英紅) plays the role of strong-minded a Police Chief Superintendent. Drawing comparison with her on-screen character, Kara finds similarities in her real personality and how she handles her relationships.

Family Afraid of Her?

In The Defected, Kara’s character has a strong and intimidating personality, and Kara agreed that her real self is the same, “I am the same. My brother and sister are afraid of me and rarely ask me out for dinner. They think I am too serious, strict and like to order people around. I prefer to hear the real words rather than wasting my time to listen to beautiful lies. They are scared of me.”

Independent Woman

At the age of 59 and still single, Kara is not too concerned with her relationship status. Kara joked that Meg Lam (林建明) tried to introduce her to suitors, “She introduced a 70-year-old man to me. Her friends are all in their 60s and 70s and are fathers. She doesn’t have good recommendations.” When asked if she would accept someone younger than her, Kara replied that she would be too scared to take care of someone younger and would rather have an older uncle to take care of her instead.

Kara shared that she doesn’t mind being single. “Relationships are not important to me; it’s a bonus. Work is more important as it represents the value of existence and it gives me security in life. A relationship won’t make me feel safe, but it will make me feel normal like everyone else. A normal woman would get married and have babies. I didn’t. Just think of me as an abnormal woman.”

In her previous relationship, Kara felt that she didn’t do well enough. When she helped her ex-boyfriend with his career, her ex-boyfriend was unhappy and blamed her for planning everything, “I clearly saw he needed help and I helped him. What was the result? He felt he lost dignity. I thought I was trying to be helpful, but apparently he didn’t like it.”

Best Actress Award

It has been 10 years since Kara returned to film drama with TVB. Although she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Rosy Business <巾幗梟雄> and won several awards for her appearance in movies, many fans felt that she has a great chance in winning Best Actress for her role in The Defected. In regards to her hope in winning the award, Kara joked that her awards display cabinet is not full, “I hope that after the Best Actress Awards, I still have room.”

In filming The Defected, Kara felt it was challenging to memorize the script, “It was either giving directions to people, to single out people, or be harsh and hurtful to someone. There were a lot of technical terms for police departments and it was all in English with words like ‘ACP’ and ‘APC’. It makes me dizzy trying to memorize them.”
