Karena Lam Announces Divorce Ending 12-Year Marriage

Hong Kong actress Karena Lam (林嘉欣) and director Yuen Kim Wai’s (袁劍偉) 12-year marriage was wrought with negative speculations from the outset. Besides their 13-year age gap, Karena’s financial earning power was much higher than her husband. The couple’s relations cooled significantly in recent years, and a financial dispute was allegedly the last straw that sealed their divorce.

Karena was rumored to have been a third party in Yuen Kim Wai’s previous marriage. The couple got married in a flash wedding in 2010 when Karena became pregnant with her elder daughter Kayla. For more than a decade, Karena and Yuen Kim Wai maintained stable relations until the birth of the birth of their younger daughter Sofie.

Over the years, their lifestyle and parenting differences festered, while financial disagreements also grew. Last year, Karena bought a property under Yuen Kim Wai’s name. When the property was transferred back to Karena, the accounts and numbers did not add up, leaving $400,000 Hong Kong dollars unaccounted for which intensified their disagreements.

As divorce speculations grew, Karen and her husband confirmed their separation but they will jointly raise their two daughters together.  Their statement read, “After 12 years of marriage, we unfortunately have to admit that our marriage has come to an end. We did not make this decision rashly. We will work hard together to face the changes to come. No matter what, we will always be a family. Our first role is as parents, and we will focus foremost on raising our children. They are our most important job. We will continue to raise our children together. We hope that the future will be bright for us.”

Karena’s manager confirmed the actress brought her two daughters to Canada while visiting family during the summer. However, Karena’s manager did not disclose the reason for the couple’s divorce.
