Louis Koo Realizes Dad’s Dream of Stardom

Who knew Louis Koo’s (古天樂) father, Koo Chun Kwong (古振光), was also an actor in his time too? Known as by his stage name Gao Feng (高峰), he had worked with familiar names in Cantonese film industry, but later went into fashion retail as his career did not take off.

In a Facebook photo posted by veteran actress Meg Lam (林建明), she was seen pictured with veterans Lo Hoi Pang (盧海鵬), Cheung Ying Choi (张英才) together with his wife and niece, along with Micheal Tse (謝天華) and Michael Miu (苗僑偉) with wife Jaime Chik (戚美珍), who had organized the early mid-Autumn reunion. The venue was Louis Koo’s restaurant. As Louis’ father had worked with Cheung Ying Choi in his acting days, Cheung is a familiar family friend to them.

Describing his father as a traditional and frugal man who abstained totally from smoking and alcohol, Koo wrote in his 2002 biography Finding Happiness (尋樂記), “Is it because he did not know how to enjoy himself? No! He did it all for us. Friends who knew us tease him for being a perfectly devoted father.”

Louis continued, “He was a very hardworking man, putting bread on the table for our education in the hopes that we would achieve success in life. He never lost heart and picked himself up despite life’s challenges; that perseverance is admirable.”

Entering the film industry in 1993, it seems that the earnest Koo has inherited his father’s persevering attitude. Beside finding success as a movie star and film producer, the Louis also manages his own movie and artist management firm while making low-key contributions to charitable efforts and supporting the film industry’s development.
