Myolie Wu Portrays Karena Ng’s Mother in “Below the Lion Rock”

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Handover to China, Chinese drama Below the Lion Rock <獅子山下的故事> is currently airing.  The cast largely consists of Hong Kong stars such as Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Karena Ng (吳千語), Carlos Chan (陳家樂), and Patrick Tam (譚耀文).

Set against the backdrop of a Hong Kong style cafe, the drama follows Myolie’s character from 18 to 65 years old, which marks one of the actress’ most challenging roles. In the drama, Myolie becomes a mother at the young age of 18, taking her daughter to travel thousands of miles to Hong Kong in hopes of a better life and to reunite with her husband, portrayed by Patrick Tam (譚耀文). However, Patrick has minimal scenes, as his character dies early in the drama and Myolie and Karena must depend on each other to make a life for themselves in Hong Kong.

Myolie, who is 14 years older than Karena, may look too young to portray a mother in the drama. While collaborating in ViuTV’s drama Iron Ladies <熟女強人> in 2020, they were rumored to not get along on set but the gossip mill stayed quiet during the filming of Below the Lion Rock <獅子山下的故事>.

  1. No issue with age. My issue is why she speaks like a 50s type of series. I hope her acting has improved after years of stagnant non improvement.
