New BL TV Adaptation Rumored to Have Approached Lu Han and Greg Hsu
The Untamed <陈情令> producers have announced that they will be adapting a new BL series, Tian Gong Ci Fu <天宫赐福> (also known as The Heaven Official’s Blessing) into a TV series.
Written by the same author who created Mo Dao Zu Shi <魔道祖师>, the original novel of The Untamed, Tian Gong Ci Fu follows the magical adventures of two gods—the disgraced god Xie Lan and the demon king Hua Cheng—and their love story which transcends 800 years. The novel has since been adapted into a manhua and a donghua (Chinese animation), which was released last month.
Chan Ka Lam (陈家霖), who directed The Untamed, will also be directing Tian Gong Ci Fu. Production design will be helmed by Han Zhong (韩忠), who also designed Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <如懿传>. Visual arts will be by Li Shaohua (李昭桦), who also did Eternal Love <三生三世十里桃花>. The studios have already rolled out casting auditions. The TV series is scheduled to begin filming in the second quarter of 2021, and will stream exclusively on iQIYI.
According to rumors, producers have approached Chinese idol star Lu Han (鹿晗) and Taiwanese actor Greg Hsu (许光汉) to star in the series, but these reports were never confirmed.
The Untamed was 2019’s breakout series, and singlehandedly pushed out lead stars Xiao Zhan (肖战) and Wang Yibo (王一博) as one of the most popular actors in China. Their fanbase broke past international barriers, and it is expected that Tian Gong Ci Fu will achieve similar success.

Fans of The Untamed including the delusional bunch are hoping Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo will be cast. I will say even if they are approached they will say no, in part no thanks to the toxic fandoms. And moreover they wouldn’t take such a risk now at the height of their career. As for these 2 actors, I look at them and if they are considered, I hope they have the chemistry and the looks. The latter… lacking. Imagine they will probably drop another 20 pounds or so. The former, I do not know. The success of The Untamed was how the original story was somehow miraculously treated with loads of respect even if toned down, it was seriously very romantic apart from many well done areas. Further the leads grew so close and genuinely liked each other hence creating the CPs that crazy fans are now proclaiming is very real, despite zero evidence or interaction in public when there are plenty of paps and the idea of the hitting the goldmine if imagine the expose involving 2 young lead actors. Further, because of the success of The Untamed China may be zoned into toning down any BL content, which the Untamed somehow again miraculously managed to squeeze thru. So basically, whilst the director is the type who will masterfully navigate that complexity, believe me, whatever bl there is, chinese censorship now knows how to smash it into pure bromance.
I am glad that Yibo and Xiao Zhan is not considering this and hopefully thats also true. Because I am sick of all the CP fans and their many photoshopped pictures and ridiculous theories that new fans not knowing better are also proclaiming OMG it’s so true! bandwagon. True or untrue, it is not for these CP crazy fans to manipulate. Oh I’ve seen crazy fandoms, K fans are toxic but C fans are the next level of insanity.
