Nick Cheung Clarifies That He Is Not Ill

Nick Cheung‘s (張家輝) thin figure raised concerns when the actor attended the late filmmaker Benny Chan‘s (陳木勝) funeral. Many were worried that Nick’s sudden weight loss was due to an undisclosed terminal illness. However, his recent attendance at a promotional event for an insurance company immediately rebutted those rumors. Appearing energized in a suit, the actor emphasized that he is healthy and not diagnosed with any disease.

Nick explained that he stopped working this past year because of the pandemic, which allowed him to stay at home more and led to his sudden weight loss. He explained, “I have been using the computer a lot, so my eyes have been very tired. I have also gotten skinnier, so I look like I have a terminal illness when I wear loose-fitting clothes. Don’t worry everyone, I am very healthy and fit.”

To assure the public, Nick shared that he even swung off a cliff-top toward the ocean in the comedic micro-film that he filmed for the insurance company. Although the whole project took three days to complete and required a lot of physical energy, he has been training his stamina during his time at home by going hiking. “I even make my wife Esther Kwan (關詠荷) and daughter go hiking with me so that we can exercise together,” the actor shared. “We usually just go hiking or eat out, but we have to sit apart since we have three people.”

He continued, “I am not someone who plans well, but after experiencing the current pandemic on society, I started thinking differently. I now have more time to spend with my family and especially my mother, who has some illnesses. Other than that, I usually write scripts or discuss future projects with directors.”

He Loves His Wife More

He laughed and shared that many couples are divorcing because they are trapped at home together, given the pandemic. However, this is not the case for Nick and Esther. He said, “I love her even more. Actually, I am the more annoying one at home. My daughter has online schooling, so I have to make sure she is doing her homework and is focused.”

When asked why he still needs to watch over her when she’s already 14 years old, he said, “This is a very dangerous age, but luckily she isn’t dating yet.” Joking about how he knew that, he just responded, “Well, let’s not talk about that!”

He added that he understands that she might go through a rebellious stage at her age, but he will always forgive her because he has also made mistakes during his youth. He said, “No matter how well we get along, I cannot pressure her, but instead, we have become friends. She picks on her mom more.”

Nick’s Daughter Can Sing

When reporters asked about his daughter’s plans, he said that he is unsure because she doesn’t even know what she wants to study or do yet. As for whether she has plans to join the industry, he said, “I am most scared of this question because my wife and I are both invested in the industry, so she might be too. She can sing, but she definitely cannot act because I know exactly when she is trying to act.” He even joked that his daughter inherited her singing skills from his industry brother Jacky Cheung (張學友).

Nevertheless, Nick expressed that he would be supportive of his daughter no matter what decision she makes. Given that she has not decided yet, he tries to avoid the topic in the meantime to avoid unnecessary pressure. He also added that he and his wife are on the same page when it comes to this.
