Ratings for “Barrack O’ Karma 1968” Continue to Drop

Since airing, Barrack O’ Karma 1968’s <金宵大廈 2> viewership ratings were shockingly low. Based on the drama’s weekly decline in ratings from 18.5 to 16.5 points,  the upcoming finale this Friday, April 29, may only pull in a moderate number of viewers.

The original series was a huge hit when it first broadcast in 2019, receiving great reviews and achieving a high of 27 points in ratings. Joel Chan (陳山聰) and Selena Lee (李施嬅) also won Most Popular Onscreen Partnership at the TVB Anniversary Awards, which was a testament to their chemistry. After three years, the original cast reunited to film for the sequel in September 2020. The success of TVB dramas in the supernatural genre had sparked expectations that the sequel would be well received.

It is said that Barrack O’ Karma 1968 had replaced Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Alice Chan (陳煒), and Sharon Chan’s (陳敏之) drama Against Darkness <黯夜守護者>, which will now be pushed back to May.

Premiering last week, Story of Zom-B <食腦喪B> took over the timeslot of Chinese drama The Imperial Coroner <機智女法醫>. As the latter was a critical success and garnered 23.1 points in its final week of broadcast, Story of Zom-B could not retain viewers and slipped to 18.2 points.

Selena Lee Battles Autoimmune Disorder

Responses

  1. Just feels like the sequel’s main storyline is confusing for the sake of being confusing. And all the side stories barely have anything to do with the main characters

  2. I wouldn’t be shocked if this drama have low ratings the story line of Selena and Joel keeps bouncing back in forth to different realms causing confusion at times i just leave it playing and if it seems to pick up i’ll turn my attention back in to watch

  3. It is very confusing.
A better way to string everything together is start by explaining what MIA is and how it’s related to Joel having a lobotomy from Episode 1. And then explain how the building itself is related to MIA.
    Here is the love square:
Maurice and Ella are from real world 2022. Lydia and Joey are from the metaverse entry via the Golden Building. Maurice actually likes Lydia from the metaverse and not Ella. Maurice does cheat on Ella because he dated her and slept with her first and was living with Ella when he slept with Lydia. Ella is simply being pathetic lover even though she knows Maurice is cheating on her. Ella lightens up when she has another target named Joey–Maurice’s equivalent in the metauniverse. Lydia is narcissistic when she finds out she’s the third party as she’s being rude to Ella. Lydia didn’t know she was the third party at first but after she knew, why is she taking out her anger on Ella? Ella is actually being nice to Lydia…..and that’s because Ella is a doormat
    Other storylines
They had so much potential but the fact that they simply show how it’s mildly connected to the Golden Building but not MIA, it’s really like everyone has their own show within 1 show

  4. i actually find it a breath of fresh air from their usual poorly written cop stories

    1. Agree! It’s confusing at first, but once you get into the drama’s routine, I’m quite used to the back and forth. Plus, I like to constantly have my brain rolling instead of watching whatever is on the screen. Less typical compared to their usual dramas. Hopefully, all the questions will be answered soon. ^^

      1. Yeah, it’s a rarity in tvb drama that you have to watch the screen to understand what’s going on. I usually put tvb drama on as background noise b/c they are so brainless and easy to guess so no need to watch to figure out what happened but this show is not the same. I didn’t think tvb could pull off a show that requires such focus

    2. I don’t think you and I are talking about the same thing. I said it’s a novel idea but failed execution. Inception was a breadth of fresh air, but people can follow the plot. It was meta without being confusing. The sequel to Barrack was meta and confusing.

  5. I like the mini stories except the Mukbang one. That one barely make any sense. Main story can be confusing at times but once revealed it all make sense to the mystery surrounding it. It’s a slow burn on the main story, but I admit that the love story moment between Ella and Joey can be reaaaaaaaaaally slow and boring.
