Reasons Why “Big White Duel” is a Hit
Big White Duel <白色強人> is fast becoming one of TVB’s top dramas of the year. With a strong cast and well-written plot, the drama is popular in both Hong Kong and Mainland China. Big White Duel even prompted many viewers to search for new episodes ahead of the broadcast date, and is a hot topic in online forums.
Emotional Plot [Spoiler Alert]
The emotional connection between the characters is one of the drama’s highlights. In episode 15, Natalie Tong’s (唐詩詠) character was suspected of contracting the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome after treating a patient and had symptoms of the disease.
When Natalie fainted, Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) character did not hesitate to look after Natalie even at the risk of the disease being contagious. Many viewers were touched by Kenneth’s word, “Before the divorce, this woman waited for me every night and she waited too long. It’s enough, I don’t want her to wait for me anymore.” Moved by Kenneth’s acting, many Mainland Chinese viewers started a discussion on Weibo and hoped that the two characters would get back together.
Balancing Regional Preferences
In recent times, TVB tried to attract Mainland Chinese viewers by working with other production companies to film popular dramas, such as At the Threshold of an Era <創世紀>, Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2>, Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者2>, or focusing on police and crime themes. In doing so, the dramas tend to lose elements familiar to Hong Kong viewers while also failing to attract the viewers in Mainland China.
Unlike other medical dramas, Big White Duel focuses on medical reform issues, and dares to incorporate current political and social issues. However, as the drama is produced exclusively by TVB, the drama’s topic is too sensitive to broadcast on major channels in Mainland China. For example, in the recent episodes, it touched on the SARS incident back in 2003. During that time, a professor from Guangzhou spread the disease to tourists and locals after staying in a hotel in Hong Kong. As the SARS disease was a global epidemic, the Chinese government censored information of the incident and limited the information shared among the general public.
Despite the limited sources to view the drama, Big White Duel has proven to be a success and many Mainland Chinese fans are praising the wonderful plot and the realistic surgery procedures.

My only critique of the series so far is how repetitive the argument is for the medical reform. The characters have repeated the same spiel for 15 episodes and it gets a bit predictable.
@hazel 馬明’s character having no personality except being short-sighted and “patient is #1” is a big too much
@terrycrews19 Same here…Kenneth Ma’s character is sometime quite annoying…I’m actually rooting for Roger’s character.
@jessehsuan YT is definitely more interesting, but I’ve never been a fan of Roger’s acting. He’s better in comedic roles.
@terrycrews19 Dr. Lui rambling about blocking the medical reform is ZzZz.
I’m loving this drama so far but the only complaint I have is during one of the recent episodes natalie’s character zoe was handling a patient that was a potential MERs carrier and then she went on to help a lady deliver a baby. I thought that part was written really sloppy. If she directly handled a patient that might’ve had MERs someone else should have delivered the baby because there were other doctors quarantined with her. A newborn baby is vulnerable to diseases and have not been vaccinated that can put the poor baby at risk. I know it’s just a drama but that part made me extremely uncomfortable.
@holiday Exactly! I was wondering the same thing why Zoe was the chosen one to deliver the baby when she was also in charge of the MERS patient!
I like it because it skips all the boring filler moments with characters that don’t add anything to the series.
one of the best drama this year. skipped the other ones mentioned in the article. i wonder if mainland chinese knows the truth about sars since the gov filters it.
This series is ok so far, albeit being draggy on the medical reformation issue. I’ve been waiting to see what will happen if the medical reform bill is approved by the parliament.
Anyway, it is still among the few good series that TVB has produced recently. Hope that it would get more compliments from the audience to encourage TVB to produce good quality dramas in future.
This is definitely one of the best dramas TVB has produced in recent years. I have been anxiously following each episode every day. Today’s episode was really good. Love the plot twists and the conflict between the two main characters.
Descent show , good cast and story line so far.
