Sammi Cheng Inspires Lee San San to Be a Stronger Person

Former Miss Hong Kong, Lee San San (李珊珊), has retired from the entertainment industry for more than a decade due to her struggles with panic disorder and weight fluctuations. Advocating for better medical care and attention to mental disorders, the Detective Investigations Files 4 <刑事偵緝檔案IV> actress has been more open about her own struggles and road to recovery.

On lifestyle radio show, Mind, Your Own Business <自在想>, San San often had difficulty breathing and would suddenly feel her heart rate increase and have blurred vision during the early days of panic disorcer. She attributed her stubborn and strong character is one of the causes for the disorder.

“When I joined the entertainment industry at 18 years old, I would often deal with unhappy and unfortunate occurrences by myself. This industry is extremely high stress and high pressure. If I didn’t already have such a strong character, I would not have withstood it for so long. But over a period of time, the negative emotions piled up and eventually exploded.”

After being diagnosed with panic disorder, San San withdrew from the public eye and tried to live a normal life. However, she would often get odd stares and comments from pedestrians who recognized her. Frequent comments from strangers such as “Wow, you’re huge now, like a fat lady!” further damaged her mental well-being.

Despite the negativity, the 43-year-old is thankful for the positivity that came out of her journey. Specifically, San San openly thanked good friend, Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文), for being a pillar of support during her recovery. “The first person I want to thank is Sammi, who who pulled me back from the edge of a cliff. She would encourage me and say: ‘Don’t be scared! Even if you are taking one step forward and two steps back, we will walk this road together.’ I felt like she was an angel sent to help guide me during that time.”

In addition to Sammi, San San also named Louis Koo (古天樂), Bowie Lam (林保怡), and Kimbee Chan (甘比) for being there and giving her the courage to continue moving forward.

  1. People are so rude. We never know what others may be going through so to cast judgement like that and to be so vocal about it is so disgusting. I hope Lee San San gets well soon. Her body is easier to change, just work out, diet, etc but her mental health is the one that is harder to treat. As long as she gets mentally healthy again, she can get her body back in shape in no time, especially with all her celeb friends showing her tips on how to stay fit. Just need to ignore these naysayers.

I agree and who knows what she is suffering from? I remember people were criticizing Anita Yuen’s looks but they did not know she suffered from hyperthyroidism which caused her to look older and a bit haggard. My oldest brother suffers from the same condition so I know how it is. People are so shallow and evil these days.
