Sammy Leung Doesn’t Want to Be a Lead Actor
Sammy Leung (森美) is a respectable DJ and MC, so when TVB asked him to star in 2012’s Friendly Fire <法網狙擊> as the second male lead, he was a bit taken aback. Fortunately, his many years of onscreen experience helped Sammy through the job. He happy agreed to return to acting a second time, for 2017’s My Ages Apart <誇世代>, starring as Moses Chan’s (陳豪) best friend.
But when TVB asked him to return for a third time, he was promoted several levels, all the way up to first male lead. Sammy was shocked.
“I got really worried for [TVB]!” said the 46-year-old artiste, joking that TVB had made a horrible choice for choosing him to lead Ratman to the Rescue <過街英雄>. “I also don’t have a romantic line with the female leads! Priscilla Wong (黃翠如) and I just bicker the entire time! I got to pursue Zoie Tam (譚凱琪), but I obviously failed at it.”
Despite having no significant romantic interest on the show, one good thing did come out of it. “Both female leads ended up getting married after doing the show with me,” said Sammy. “Maybe I helped them realize what a good man is supposed to be!”
Ratman to the Rescue was shot in 2018. It first aired overseas in December 2019 to critical acclaim. It finally premiered on August 17, 2020 in Hong Kong. It stars Sammy as an unscrupulous paparazzo who becomes a friendly neighborhood superhero after developing rat-like superpowers.
On working with Priscilla Wong for the first time, Sammy clarified that he had previously collaborated with Priscilla on a film many years ago. “She played a reporter interviewing me. Now she’s definitely superseded me and watching me sink lower! It’s been many years since we’ve last seen each other. I’ve learned a lot from her. After all, she’s a number one sister now! I’m just a creator. She’s like a very hard-working athlete. Like an athlete training for a game, acting can be trained! I’ve seen her improvement through the years. I definitely cannot compare myself to her.”
For his role as the “Ratman”, Sammy had to train hard and film late into the night. Asking if Sammy has gotten addicted to being a leading TV star, he said, “Not at all. There’s too much responsibility. Next time if I get casted as a lead, I’m going to ask them to reconsider!”
