Shawn Yue Commands $2 Million per Film, Erasing Old Box Office Poison Stigma
Since parking at Media Asia’s Peter Lam’s pier last year, Shawn Yue Man Lok had a remarkable turnaround in his film career and became an actor in high demand. Shawn successfully foraged into the mainland market with his recent films. Aside from appearing inJohn Woo’s Reign of Assassins <剑雨>, Shawn’s new film, Curse of the Deserted <荒村公寓> raked $30 million (Yuan) inbox office sales, erasing his former stigma as a box office failure.
After successfully reviving his career, Shawn’s filming fee grew from $1.5 million to $2 million (Yuan) per picture. From his newfound income, Shawn bought a luxury home and car. He was spotted driving a $1 million (Yuan) Mercedes-Benz car earlier.
An artist’s networking skills are extremely important in the entertainment industry. Aside from having good relations with Peter Lam, Shawn is also good friends with Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Chingmy Yau Suk Ching’s husband, Shum Ka Wai (founder of IT fashion company). Shawn often plays pool and joins hot pot dinners with Aaron and Mr. Shum. To keep up with his well-off friends, Shawn maintains a lavish lifestyle with high expenses.

Jayne: When I see Shawn Yue, I always think of Edison Chen. They look alike in some ways and allegedly the two guys fought overGillian Chung. Due to the nude photo scandal which marred Edison ’s career, Shawn seems to have surpassed him now.
Is he worth that money?

I like his movies. I normaly don’t like watch horror movies, but he was playing the main charcter, so I thought:”Ok, let’s watch it!” And then WOW. I really like the movies with him. Maybe you try Dragon Squad, Playboy Cops, Invisible Target and/or Rebellion. These are my 4 fav. movies of him! ^^
Maybe I should watch more HK movies. Didn’t know he has become so huge. But, nowadays, HK movies seem boring. They are either
1) Big budget HK/Mainland cooperation historical/wuxia movies
2) Infernal Affairs style dark heavy movie
3) Comedy
I only watch the comedy nowadays. 😛
Most tired of are the big budget HK/Mainland historical/wuxia movies. I do enjoy the Ip Man movies though.
Btw, I read in newspaper that Andy Lau’s ‘Di Ren Jie’ did better than ‘Reign of Assassins’.

I used to love HK movies. Hv stopped watching them even since they changed the dubbing company. Can’t get used to the accents.
I have only seen some Chinese movies and did not really like/love any of them. I have always liked mainly Chinese series.That is why I really miss seeing Andy Lau, Tony Leung and many other actors that have left the little screen and have gone to the big screen. The series with Andy, Tony and many others are now viewed as classic treasures because we all know that they will never come back to making series ever.

Is $1 million yuan a lot of money? It isn’t if you convert to USD.
Shawn and Edison started in the film industry around the same time. Due to their age, they often competed in the same roles. And like most people, I also prefer Edison more due to his more handsome physique. Edison also benefited from his more rebellious, bad-boy image, which was more distinct than Shawn’s public persona.
However, with Edison missing from the HK film industry since the nude photo scandal, I guess all the young romantic lead roles were given to Shawn and Alex Fong. Shawn’s presence has truly increased in the last 2 years.
Looks Edison > Shawn
Music Edison > Shawn – not that Edison was better but he had the opportunity to collaborate with some really talented people
Style Shawn > Edison – Shawn’s got the body to show of tighter fitting clothes. I was annoyed with Edison’s baggy style.
Acting Shawn > Edison – pretty much the same. Edison’s disadvantage is the way he talks. He’s got a lot of phrasing in everything he says and it’s annoying. Shawn can act though. I saw him in this ghost movie with Stephy and he was pretty darn good!
before the scandal, i was siding with Edison more. after the scandal, i’m all shawn. not because of what has happened but because i saw more of shawn. i got a better idea of how well he can act.
I think Edison’s scandal has helped Shawn. The movie producers has no one else in the same age to turn to and Shawn got a lot of offers and opportunities. Edison is more handsome

And speaking of networking, edison has connection with japan top fashion founders, designers, american hollywood singers, rappers, and agencies. With his Juice stores in asia plus his clot high profile collaborations. Shawn is nowhere near Edison. So how can shawn surpass him ? Edison is due to act in another hollywood film soon 😉
filming in hollywood doesn’t make him more or less credible.
I agree that Edison totally wins in looks and wealth. Shawn looks older than his age.
@Pandamao: True, but knowing how to speak English fluently makes one much “more” credible don’t you think ? To be able to star in Hollywood/Foreign movies. The market is bigger. As for Shawn, it’s limited, or he will get typecasted.

Hmm funny. I was first exposed to Edison from ‘Twins Effect’ I really liked him, ’cause you know he kinda looked cute. Then, I saw ‘Invisible Target’ and was instantly smitten with Shawn. I went on to watch ‘Infernal Affairs I&II’and all I can say is Shawn’s acting overpowered Edison’s. Neither looks better than the other, they’ve got their own charm in their looks. Edison didn’t quite leave a mark on me to make me wanna watch more of his films, whereas within a few months I’ve managed to watch majority of Shawn’s films old and new. Shawn all the way, despite the scandal. In no way did the sex scandal helped Shawn, he starred in 30+ films and some series before the scandal even broke out. Edison starred in less before he went down the drain. I’ve got nothing against Edison, theses are mere facts.

Edison’s always got this dopey look on his face and it’s very annoying the way he talks (Sorry gals for being a bit harsh). Shawn has such beautiful eyes, although I must admit, at times he looks very mean and old haha, but I still love him….
