Tiffany Lau Blames Herself for Breaking Her Parents Apart

When Tiffany Lau (劉穎鏇) won first runner-up at the 2016 Miss Hong Kong Pageant, she was only 19 years old. Now 23, the Los Angeles native is living permanently in Hong Kong so she can develop her career as an actress. However, this wasn’t always the plan.

Tiffany was only a freshman at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) when she decided to audition for Miss Hong Kong. After winning the silver prize, she decided to leave the university to pursue an entertainment career. Surprisingly, Tiffany’s parents were supportive of her decision. Her father eventually quit his job as a hairstylist for early retirement, and moved to Hong Kong to take care of her. Tiffany’s mother, however, has to stay in Los Angeles.

“I don’t think my parents have ever separated before,” said Tiffany. She said she feels guilty for breaking them apart. “They had to change their lifestyle because of me. That’s why, when I first moved to Hong Kong, I promised myself that I would be the absolute breadwinner of the family. I don’t want my parents to spend any more money.”

Tiffany was once a member of her high school’s basketball team. Her talent in sports makes her a popular choice for casting in action dramas, and her rise to stardom in the TV industry has been quick. Also a popular celebrity endorser, Tiffany is said to be earning at least $70,000 Hong Kong dollars a month. She denied giving an exact number of her income, but did she say that she is very satisfied with the numbers. “It’s doable. Of course, the more the better. The goal is to bring my mother to Hong Kong so we can all live together.”

The 23-year-old is careful with her image, as she understands how fragile it is to be a fadan. Tiffany was still dating her first boyfriend, who she met in high school, when she was competing in Miss Hong Kong. Realizing the difficulty behind a long distance relationship, Tiffany called the relationship off.

“Sometimes things just happen,” she said. “We are not in contact. I don’t think we could be friends again.”

Once photographed at a club with Fei Wu (胡㻗), the paparazzi had fun juicing up her relationship with the Mr. Hong Kong winner. Tiffany said the dating rumor had scarred her. “My parents read about it and grew terrified. [The rumor] was the first thing my mother asked me when she got off the plane. They were worried that it would affect my career. (What is your relationship with him?) We’re just friends, but I really don’t want this [rumor] to break our relationship.”

Asking if there is possibility for her to be more than just friends with Fei in the future, she said, “I don’t know. We’ll see what happens later.”

Tiffany admitted that she is a girlfriend who would easily get jealous. “If I see him hanging out with other girls in a close way, I don’t think I’ll be able to handle it! Personally, I draw the line strictly. I will never give out the wrong signal, and I will maintain a distance.”

  1. Wow. She must be very close with her parents even her dad have to quit his job to moved in with her in Hong Kong and there’s no mention about her siblings? I’m guessing she’s the only child? I thought Los Angeles can make easy money but she has to moved to Hong Kong to become a tvb actress which doesn’t get paid much and the living are so expensive too maybe she just wants some limelight. I think Wu fei is also tvb actor? I remember him in some dramas.
