TVB Suffers Damage from Typhoon Mangkhut

One of the most powerful storms to hit Hong Kong, Typhoon Mangkhut left a path of destruction behind. The heavy winds shook skyscrapers, shattered windows and scaffolds, uprooted trees, and flooded coastal areas. Located in Tseung Kwan O, TVB Studios also suffered structural damage in its outdoor sets.

Despite winds reaching over 130 miles per hour during the typhoon, it turns out that TVB Studios was built like a fortress and withstood structural damage. The station’s icon, TVB Buddy, remained intact on top of its corporate building. The outdoor sets suffered the most, with downed trees, signs, and debris strewn everywhere. But compared to the rest of the Hong Kong, which will require months to recover and rebuild, TVB Studios was spared from the worst of the storm.

Many TVB artistes returned to work today, including Jimmy Au (歐瑞偉), who dealt with a chaotic and confusing commute due to roads closing and cancelled lines in public transportaion.  He said, “Typhoon Mangkhut was very strong. Many of my colleagues’ [homes] suffered from the storm. I was very lucky that my home was not affected. I left my home two hours earlier than normal to get to work. TVB City was pretty safe, but there was some minor damage.”

Samantha Ko (高海寧) also went back to TVB Studios today to continue filming Killer <殺手>. She was in Macau on Saturday to act as a judge for a beauty contest, but all the ferries had stopped running by the time the pageant was over. TVB arranged a car to pick up Samantha and took a detour road through Zhuhai to bring her back safely to Hong Kong just before the typhoon started. She said, “Mongkok was okay. Although the winds were very strong, it wasn’t majorly affected. But I kept waking up because of the noisy winds.”
