William Chan and Myolie Wu Take On CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala

China Media Group hosts a Chinese New Year Special called CCTV New Year’s Gala <春節聯歡晚會>, also known as the Spring Festival Gala, every year to celebrate the Lunar New Year. This year, Hong Kong singer William Chan (陳偉霆) and Hong Kong actress Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) participated in this grand event to welcome the Year of the Ox.

William opened the show singing “Wan Shi Ru Yi” <萬事如意> with Nana Ou-Yang (歐陽娜娜), Jiang Shuying (江疏影), Tong Liya (佟麗婭), and Jiang Du (杜江). Wearing a light burgundy suit, William hyped the audience with his enthusiasm and even interacted with the crowd during his performance. Though William is mostly known for his upbeat music and dance, he still captured the audience’s attention in this opening act with his handsome looks. Many netizens even complimented this opening group for having the best physical appearance.

Aside from William representing Hong Kong, Myolie also took part in this year’s performance. Ever since she participated in the second season of Everybody Stand By <演員請就位>, her popularity has risen significantly in mainland China, giving her countless opportunities. Last year, she took on the hosting role for the Greater Bay Area of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, but this year, she made it onto the Beijing stage alongside Zhang Yuqi (張雨綺) and Ni Ni (倪妮) for a short sketch Welcoming Spring <開往春天的幸福>.

The sketch is based on the theme of love. Myolie’s character is in a relationship with actor Bao Bei’er’s (包貝爾) character. Though she is very pregnant on stage, she excelled in her three-minute performance. She left such a strong impression on the audience with her all Cantonese dialogue, which is rare but also a breath of fresh air in the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. At the end, she spoke a few lines of Northeastern Mandarin, which made the crowds laugh.
