Touted as one of the most anticipated films of 2013 and produced and written by father/son duo Raymond Wong (黃百鳴) and Edmond Wong (黃子桓) and directed by Ronny Yu (于仁泰), Saving General Yang <忠烈楊家將>is a period war film that boasts an impressive and good-looking male cast hailing from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China and a story line that was inspired by true events.

Saving General Yang centers around the legendary Yang clan, featuring Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) as General Yang. Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健) replaced Louis Koo (古天樂), who unfortunately had to back out due to a leg injury, as the first son. Yu Bo (於波 ) portrays the second son, Vic Chou (周渝民) as the third son, Li Chen (李晨 ) as the fourth son, Raymond Lam (林峰 ) as the fifth son, Wu Chun (吳尊 ) as the sixth son and Fu Xinbo (付辛博 ) as the seventh son.

General Yang’s seven sons must use their individual strengths and skills to engage in an epic battle against 3,000 warriors in order to save their father. Several of the sons meet their deaths as they sacrifice their own lives to save their father in the timeless tale of filial piety.

Fast-paced battle scenes are backed by carefully-crafted cinematography and choreography. In fact, the film boasts itself as “The movie with the most battle scenes on horses” due to the fact that over 60 percent of the fighting is done on horses.

To add depth to the film, Korean pop group Super Junior-M was tapped to record the theme song, “I Support You” <我挺你>, a song about brotherly love and support.

With the star-studded cast, epic battle scenes and an emotional theme song to wrap it all together, Saving General Yang should definitely be on everyone’s list of films to watch in 2013.

The trailer attracts me to see the movie. at first i was disappointed Louis got replaced by Ekin. But it seems that Ekin is suitable for the character. He look pretty good in here.

Still makes me wonder how Louis would look like and how he would portray the role if he was cast as the first son :)

Been waiting for this movie forever. That voice-over really ruins it though. Why did they give Adam Cheng an old man’s voice? – Don’t give me that crud about how old he is, his voice is still middle aged sounding and he still looks like a youngish guy with a beard. Deffo not the old man voice they matched him with.

I didn’t realize most of the fighting was on horseback though, as cool as it ends up looking, lots of the recent ancient war movies/shows have some really painfully brutal looking horse falls and it’s quite hard to watch for me. Hope they had some sort of animal welfare officer on the set to make sure nothing got too rough.
I don’t suppose there is any news on how safe the set was for the animals?

      Miriamfanz,
I think Ekin Cheng is a better casting choice than Louis Koo. Ekin suits the role of a warrior more and looks good in the battle scenes.

The trailer is well-edited which showcases the carefully filmed action scenes. Hope the script is well balanced between the action and story, as the trailer somehow remindsme of “Lord of the Rings” due to the massive warriors the Yang family has to face.

        Raina,
The release date for “Saving General Yang” has not been announced yet. However, the trailer looks pretty complete and the editing should have been finished already.

I suspect they are waiting for an ideal release date slot to be scheduled in mainland China. My guess is likely late March or even April, given the emergence of this “Saving General Yang” trailer. The release date is possibly after Stephen Chow’s “Journey to the West” (Lunar New Year) and before Donnie Yen’s “The Monkey King,” which may be seen as somewhat competing films given they are action-packed martial arts films.

        Thank you for the information.

I can’t wait though, I haven’t seen any movie version with such a strong cast. I was disappointed with Cecilia Cheung’s version. Though a couple of the TV drama versions were excellent e.g. the one with Carmen Lee, Amy Chan (Mainland series) and the old TVB classic. Good days.

this trailer makes me expect a genre film, which is a real pity because raymond looks very hard core awesome in some of those scenes i just watched

I guess I’ll just enjoy the gratuitous casting ensemble….

It would be really exciting if Raymond could film with a similar look for a TVB series. Sadly, there is like zero wuxia series from TVB these days. That Michelle Ye one seems more romance focused and Ray looks … more “scholarly” or noble?
