Charmaine Sheh Si Man, Raymond Lam Fung, and Toby Leung Ching Kei attended the prayer ceremony for TVB series, The Colorful World of Sister Fa <花花世界花家姐>. Although Charmaine often had romantic rumors with her past co-stars, there were never rumors with Raymond Lam Fung.  Charmaine laughed, “I really need to reflect on why this is the case. Maybe I am not attractive enough. After this series, there should be rumors!”

Did Charmaine have anything against Raymond? Charmaine said, “Why would I have anything against Raymond? We collaborated numerous times in the past.”

Regarding the mediocre ratings of Growing Through Life <摘 星之旅>, Raymond expressed his disappointment and believed that the advance broadcast of the series in China may have lowed the ratings in Hong Kong.

Jayne: Charmaine’s image is quite plain in The Colorful World of Sister Fa. Maybe  two ponytails would have been better; she can still pull it off! Toby’s new haircut looks exactly like Raymond Lam’s!

    1. Funn Lim says:

Jayne, no no no. 2 ponytails is too much!

And what happened to Raymond? He looks so thin!

    2. kaydee says:

charmaine’s hair reminds me of rodger’s hair in ‘life made simple’..coincidence much?

    3. Funn Lim says:

Probably because TVB thought all child like simpletons wear such hairstyle as their parents themselves do not take them for haircut. I am already dreading this.

    4. advo says:

Ray looks old and tired. He should take some time off instead of filming this silly show.

    5. Vivien says:

^ Ray will take a break after this series.

Charmaine’s hair is ugly. It made her look like Roger Kwok.

    6. Samantha says:

hmm not really excited with this series…
just a girl version of life made simple!!!

and yes Raymond!!! what happened to u? u lost a lot of weight!!

    7. larry says:

I want to throw up at Charmaine Sheh…..That picture, where did I see that before… Oh yes, “Always Ready” a bloated TVB series. I have a feeling this series will turn to crap. I agree with Vivien, she is cute twin dumbass brother of Roger Kwok’s modern series “Life Made Simple”.

Comment on Raymond Lam’s quote: “Raymond expressed his disappointment and believed that the advance broadcast of the series in China may have lowed the ratings in Hong Kong.”

My response: NO, duh. Blame TVB for poor airtime and the result of pirated copies and watching online free from overseas instead of TVB’s lock down (MyTV) HK viewers only website. We already know who is going to die, who ends up with, who is the killer, blah, blah, blah. Good thing is TVB always mess up and already tired of their commitment of providing a decent watchable tv series.

I question, how much money did TVB really wasted on “Growing Through Life” when they really dont expect to see at least a 30 point in rating?

    8. LALA says:

AAAAHHHH WHY????? Its bad enough shes acting like a 10 year old and gonna have a relationship with Raymond but now she has ugly hair? OOOOHH MAAA GOOSHHH! Why do they always have mushroom haircuts? Roger has one and now Charmaine? does mushroom haircuts means your mentally challenged or something? -_-

    9. Vivien says:

It’s TVB’s fault. The series isn’t bad at all. Slower at the start but it’s getting good in the middle but TVB airing in China first and let every single episode leaked and available online doesn’t help at all. Blame TVB too for poor selection of unknown heroines and poor plot writing. The picture look so China too. I feel sorry for the entire cast to only receive black result of low ratings after spending so much time in China.

    10. jayzemine says:

      ROFL-you guys are funny.
Poor Raymond, he does look so tried and it makes him look old. He definitely need a long break after this. Since GTL is not doing well, does this mean that his chance of winning Best Actor this year has slim down or will they push Uninvited Date hoping to bost his chance?

    11. JN says:

OMG! LOL! I almost fell off the chair when I see her hair. She reminded me one of the Turkish movie back in the 80′s. The girl comes to earth from space. I remembered I watched that movie when I was 7 or 8 years old and that was more than 25 yrs ago.

      I burst out laughing when I read LALA’s comment…

I only like Raymond when he was in the “Heart of Greed II” when he was with Linda Chung. I keep watching over and over.

I’m sure not looking toward this one.

    12. HeTieShou says:

What’s up with Charmaine’s hair?? Oh goodness, she looks like one of those little kids that had a bowl hair cut. My 8 year old nephew hates his hair already.

What happened to poor Raymond? IS he working so hard that he lost that much weight? I really hope that he will take a long break after this series. This series seems so silly… I wish that he can take some time off instead of wasting his time on this series….

    13. Candy says:

With due respect to mentally retarded people who mostly are borned with, Ah Wong is not the only representative and storyline. I am looking forward to seeing this from a different perspective (like watching the story of another retarded person) and only judging after watching it. At least Ah Wong is a boy and Charmaine a girl, in their world there is a big difference.

At least Charmaine has done her homework by visiting a real mentally retards’ home to understand more on their background and behaviour – there is effort there. If I was from the home or a parent I will be proud to have some attention and broadcast. The last I went to one, they all did have the same hairstyle but whether girls or boys all have to have the boys’ haircut. Cruel but it’s easier for the caretaker to maintain, it seems.

“Growing” is not a waste of time and money, only people do not understand the message, if more people focus on the golden nuggets and reflect on themselves, there will be less insane people turning to murdering innocent because of feeling unfairly treated, misuse of power and screwed up thinking. Even if someone goes up to their dads and say “I love you” or understand better about relationships in the family after watching the series, it would have been worth it. I for one have been impacted.

What’s wrong with “so China” and Chinese actresses? Aren’t those our roots, aren’t they humans too looking for opportunity to shine and improve. They put in hard work too. Sorry, it’s me being critical but deeply affected by the recent tragedy in Manila. Why must tragedy happen then people unite, HK and China. Then after a while, fight and criticise again. Sigh** The whole world is losing tolerance, love, conscience and understanding. Only criticism and complains, when tragic happens they ask WHY??

    14. Dee says:

@candy, you really have written what i wanted to say! charmaine put in alot of effort to portray this role well to the point of sacrificing her looks! I’m happy that tvb is making this serie. Afterall, ah wong left a deep impression is many many viewers, only haters thinks he was annoying

    15. Funn Lim says:

Candy, the word retard is not right to use. And for whatever research she may put in, it doesn’t matter. The story is flawed and creepy as well. Roger is a far better actor than Charmaine and if some found him annoying I can only think worse can be said of Charmaine.

    16. Candy says:

Funn, the word “retard” is the term used when the disability by birth which affects the development of the brain. It is uncomfortable for you bcos along the way people use it as a word to scold normal people when they did not do things right. Bcos of this association, I apologise, if it makes you feel better then, I’ll used mentally challenged (but aren’t we all??)

However, how you missed my point. You focused on the word I used while I was trying to tell you they also need respect. By some comments above, by putting down the people who makes the effort and sacrifices to portray the life of these people we don’t see, understand everyday, you are disrespecting them already.

Why does it not matter she does research. Better than ignorant people who comment without research, judging before they have seen the whole story and leave no room to anticipate improvements/changes from talents. Roger when he started was a terrible actor, so was Charmaine, so was Gallen Lo. I bet they are thankful they have people who gave them a chance to grow. Don’t we all, why so critical.

    17. Kidd says:

‘Retard’ is the right word but not a politically correct one. Many words that give a correct meaning are nowadays deemed unsuitable and inappropriate because of political correctness.

    18. Funn Lim says:

“However, how you missed my point. You focused on the word I used while I was trying to tell you they also need respect. By some comments above, by putting down the people who makes the effort and sacrifices to portray the life of these people we don’t see, understand everyday, you are disrespecting them already.”

And again a full circle on disrespect. I wonder what sacrifices when someone is being paid to do a job and to do it well like we all are and please they’re actors? I am in the profession where people are critical and already formed an opinion before seeing me so frankly I don’t see it as a disrespect, just the norm. Yes let’s wait and see the end product shall we? Until then not one single word shall be uttered towards analising what is forthcoming less it be said we are disrespecting people. Opinion nowadays matter very little.

Retard is not the right word, not a politically correct one. I haven’t heard this word used officially for a long time and I believe the last time someone famous did say that word, out of jest, got slammed by it. I don’t know what is the right word but retard isn’t it.

    19. Candy says:

I don’t know what profession you are in but I sure would not like to join you. When someone is paid for a job, they do not make sacrifices? They do not have dignity? I rest my case.

Sorry I am sensitive to the issue, I have a cousin who had meningitis when she was 8 yrs old and damaged her brain hence although she is now 40 years old but has 8 yr old mentally. Pains me to hear the words above. I won’t say anymore. Opinions are cheap as they are formed from ideas and not truths.

      • yen says:

        CANDY!I LUP ALL UR REMARKS!

      • Judy says:

Candy, nobody here is disrespecting people who are mentally challenged. People here are only criticizing Charmaine’s acting and the unusual storyline. You need to separate acting from reality. Almost all actors are criticized, just b/c she’s acting as a mentally handicapped person, we shouldn’t criticize her? I personally like Charmaine as a person and actress but this is just not her best work.

However, I think if we focus too much on Charmaine’s disability, we will miss the point of the drama. It’s about a girl who suffers from a mental disability that is not understood by most hong-kongers, she overcomes the prejudices and hardships with a happy face, she learns to function and live as an adult, falls in love, and is loved in return.

I’m not too troubled by the storyline of Raymond falling for her… she doesn’t seem to be that low-functioning: she cares for her family by cooking and cleaning, holds a job, etc etc.

        • Kidd says:

I agree. Initially, I also scoff at the idea and thought it was creepy. But,the writer made Fah not very low functioning so that when Hugo falls for her, it’s not that creepy. Sometimes, she act like a kid, but, other times, she’s a full functioning adult.

Plus, up to episode 6, Hugo didn’t seem that bright either. :P

        • Funn says:

“But,the writer made Fah not very low functioning so that when Hugo falls for her, it’s not that creepy. Sometimes, she act like a kid, but, other times, she’s a full functioning adult.”

Which is why Charmaine is an awful actress. It is her inconsistencies. So Fah is sometimes full functioning and sometimes not. Please, it is half the writer’s fault but half the actress’ fault. So Fah is miraculously cured for that few moments to justify why Ray’s character should and will fall for her andother times to illustrate their difficulties she is back to mentally challenged Fah. Have you seen a mentally ill person who is one second mentally ill and the other second totally cured? There are always traces, Like you can have scizhophrenic episodes and thereafter remember every single detail of what happened. It doesn’t happen that way. Good to know the series is entertaining but it is still a creepy and repugnant idea, howeever much they sugar coat it. And if she is suddenly normal and high functioning or whatever, then look at the actress and tell me, is she really doing a good job? And what does the writer mean by all these? If he or she wants a fantasy story, please make her fat, make her ugly, make her mute, make her blind, make her have asperger syndrome, anything but 10 year old mentality which clearly is a failed plot line. It is still creepy and anyone applauding this is only saying one thing; this is to be encouraged. This emcompasses mediocre acting, mediocre story, impossible romance between these 2 individuals which by the way will in reality lead to sex. So how is that not creepy? Does he instruct her like he instructs an adult? Make her wear adult stuff whilst teaching her from viewpoint of a kid? Sex education? Because that is reality. I am opposed to this story and I hate it more that supporters don’t seem to mind. I am deeply offended, not sure why the bad writing, the bad acting or all around bad taste.

        • Kidd says:

          @ Funn

And all you have watched is episode 1. You don’t know how the story develop, you don’t know how Fah act beyond episode 1. You don’t know how Hugo and Fah interact.

You are just stuck in ‘Hugo – predator,
Fah – victim’ mode where your feelings most probably are based on real life incidents where mentally challenged people are taken advantage of instead of this story.

Forest Gump can have sex with his dream girl and fathered a kid.

        • Funn says:

Forest Gump is low IQ, different.

That is a dangerous plot. No wonder I have people telling me to my face TVB can make crap and sell it effectively by the 10th episode. I am beginning to believe that. And no, Ray’s character is not predator, she is not victim, but he is innately a predator, whether she is a victim or not depend on her own mentality. Must draw line and this is the line I draw.

        • Judy says:

@Funn… I think you are focusing too much on the sexual aspect of Ray and Charmaine’s relationship in the drama… if you actually watch the drama, you will see that it actually starts off as a genuine friendship between a man and a woman.. just two people w/o labels. As for now, their friendship seems very pure & innocent… I’ll leave judgement for later if and when romance develops.
Besides, the drama actually never indicates the intelligence level of Char… for all we know she could just have IQ thats slightly below normal… after all, she can hold a job, cook, clean, speak intelligently, etc.

I do wish the drama did indicate how Charmaine is mentally challenged though.. that way we can accurately critique her acting. It would have been interesting if they made her character autistic!

        • Fox says:

If you consider Forest Gump as a low IQ, then Fa Ka Che is the same.

Does he instruct her like he instructs an adult?

Yes he does. Actually it’s a point the director exploited in the storyline.

        • Judy says:

I wonder why people are so put off by sister fa & hugo… but nobody was put off by ah wong and Catherine in life made in simple… pretty much a similar situation except gender roles are switched… ah wong did end up with Catherine in the end.

        • Fox says:

A guess: Charmaine is hated more than Roger.

        • Funn says:

I think the synopsis made it very clear she is playing a mentally challenged woman with a 10 year old IQ. If the series differs, then let’s just say the problem is the acting. If all mentally challenged is as resourceful or as independent as she is as you said, then there won’t be this label at all.

And again she is not autistic.

        • Funn says:

Judy, I don’t think they ended up together. It was open ended. Just because she is not in a relationship with another doesn’t mean she ended up with him.

        • Kidd says:

          @ Judy

That is how I see the relationship of Hugo and Fah too. They started off as friends. I think the bud of the romance has started a bit in episode 10 when they successfully sell their first Pig Pig and accidentally knock down the goods in front of a shop and has to run. After they stop for breath, Hugo kinda look at her in a certain way.

Haha, Fah even know kudzu (粉葛) is good for curing excessive eye wax (don’t know it’s true or not). :P

        • Fox says:

And again she is not autistic.

          Indeed.

Mentally challenged ones can’t take care of themselves? Have you ever heard about Tony DeBlois? I blv that Tony DeBlois’s world is even limited than Fa Ka Che and he got married. It’s in real life. You might think Julie is stupid, but she really got married with him, a blind, autistic and has Savant Syndrome man.

        • Funn Lim says:

          Fox,

“blind, autistic and has Savant Syndrome man”

My point exactly! She is none of those! She is not autistic, she is not savant, she is not blind, she is not mentally ill, she is not somewhat brain dead whatever. She is mentally handicapped with a 10 year old mind. THAT is hardly autistic blind savant.

          Pick a better example!

        • Fox says:

I don’t say Fa Ka Che has one of these thing. Wat I mean is Tony DeBlois’s world is even more limited than Fa Ka Che and he still can be in love, get married and fathered. Then why can’t Fa Ka Che think of love and in love?

        • Fox says:

Bonus, Julie can accept Tony DeBlois in real life, why can’t Hugo accept Fa Ka Che in a series?

        • Judy says:

I didn’t say she was autistic, I said it would be interesting IF they made her autistic.

“If all mentally challenged is as resourceful or as independent as she is as you said, then there won’t be this label at all.” – There are levels of mentally challenged people, some are more independent of others. In the city where I live, many people w/ Down’s Syndrome are able to work @ grocery stores, take the bus by themselves, go to the gym, etc, etc. Yes, there are labels, but the way sister fa and hugo interact are just two people… I think once he got to know her, he doesn’t see her as a person w/ a disability anymore.

Catherine and ah Wong did end up together in the end… she decided that ah Wong is the person that would give her the most happiness and is someone she could spend the rest of her life with. I agree w/ Fox, Roger is just more well-liked than Charmaine… thus the extreme “I hate Charmaine” talk in these discussions!

        • Funn Lim says:

“why can’t Hugo accept Fa Ka Che in a series”

You don’t see the issue do you?

        • Funn Lim says:

” I said it would be interesting IF they made her autistic.”

I wouldn’t mind that BUT then criticisms will be worse for performance aspect. They can’t make her autistic. It is supposed to be a colourful world, not a smaller world.

        • Kidd says:

          @ funn

You don’t see the issue do you?

Is it still an issue if the role is reverse i.e. the woman is the normal one and the man is the retarded one, like in Catherine and Ah Wong’s case?

Or if both lovers are mentally challenged, is it still an issue?

        • Funn Lim says:

Both same problem, still an issue but that is beside the point. Roles reversed is of course an issue as well. I never said it isn’t.

        • Fox says:

@ Funn: You talked a lot about in real life this and that, so I give you an example of real life. Julie is a normal girl, Tony is a guy with these problems (he even can’t wear shoes or clothes himself) but Julie and Tony still got married and Tony is fathered. It’s real life, so why can’t Fa Ka Che is loved by a normal guy in a series, where predicted to be the world of imagination.

    20. JN says:

Candy sorry about your cousin. All the comments above did not mention any criticism about the people with the disability. We are just think the story line is not a good one because it is just a fantasy.

You have to accept that in reality there is no such thing that a rich and handsome man will fall in love with a girl with the mind of a 10 years old and marry her. Maybe not in a fairy tale….

I don’t know where do you live. But as an Asian myself (i’m not Chinese, but I love watching Hong Kong series) I know for sure if you are not relative of a disability person you won’t be nice to him/her. I live in the U.S. for many years therefore, all the people with disability always the priority no matter if he/she is young or old.

    21. Macy says:

He looks so hot in the picture. I can’t wait for the series.

    22. iLOVECBML says:

some of you guys are kind of mean to charmaine>
you guys think that charmaine want her hair to be that way so you guys could laugh at her.

    23. bluerainz says:

Charmaine always looks older than Raymond in Drive of Life.. never think they compatible enough… even now after Ray looks much older than before (maybe bcoz he lose weight), still charmaine looks too old for him… sorry…

    24. buti4 says:

lol i just saw the presentation clip for : Charmaine Sheh, Raymond Lam, Tobey Leung [Sister Fa]

it looks so stupid!!! Like I know Charmaine’s gonna be playing a ‘dumb’ girl acting as a 10-year-old…. and its gonna be challenging etc… but what on earth is TVB thinking pairing up Raymond Lam – a rich playboy with mentally challenged girl Charmaine???? Its so similiar to his role in Mysteries of Love. If Professor King had troubles in being together with a policewoman Sai Lei Mui (Tavia Yeung) who is a great detective and pretty but because she came from a poor family and different socio-economic status, their love was ill-fated; tell me why in Sister Fa, Raymond’s character will even think about being in love with an ‘uglier’, ‘dumber’ girl.

Ridiculous enough, her brain is a 10-year-old!!!! That’s almost like pedophilia!!!!!!

Fair enough for Charmaine accepting this role. It may be challenging but with a stupid romance storyline like this, its disgusting. Not every series have to have romance in it. It’s not always about love….

    25. Kidd says:

Earlier, I still gave them the benefit of the doubt in terms of Raymond’s character falling for Charmaine’s character. I was thinking, despite Fah’s mentality being 10 years old, maybe she’s still rather normal in behavior, like Myolie’s in character in Golden Faith. I thought, maybe only her IQ is lower. But, after watching the presentation clip, I don’t get how Raymond’s character could for in love with her without being a paedophile. Sister Fa is really like a 10 year old kid.

    26. kaye kaye says:

      Charmaine’s hair “OMG” lol.

    27. jim says:

they are really good friend so when they work together they are very at ease with each other, for sure, they have great chemistry.

    28. jim says:

i guess the people are too busy watching the show to make comment, anyway they always had great chemistry.

    29. lai yat meeng says:
