Chow Yun Fat and Huang Xiao Ming Star in “The Last Tycoon”

Filming for Producer Andrew Lau’s (刘伟强) The Last Tycoon <大上海> was currently underway. Directed by Wong Jing (王晶), the movie  stars Chow Yun Fat (周润发), Huang Xiao Ming (黄晓明), and Francis Ng (吳鎮宇). Recent tabloids accused Fat Gor of his despotic and uncooperative attitude on the filming set, in which Wong Jing rushed to clarify that Fat Gor only received the utmost respect from everyone.

It was rumored that Fat Gor charged astronomical filming fees for The Last Tycoon. Wong Jing responded, “His fees are reasonable,” while indicating that Fat Gor did not make any unreasonable demands beyond a star of his status and caliber

Wong Jing said, “Fat Gor’s work time is rather special, not the eight hours system in Hollywood, but a bit healthier than the filming hours in Hong Kong. Andy Lau (刘德华) and Jet Li (李连杰) want what they want. In short, they are the highest specifications.”

The Last Tycoon is set in 1930s Shanghai, chronicling the power struggle between influential local figures. There will be many explosion and gunfighting scenes, which will elicit fans’ fond memories of Fat Gor’s heroic feats in earlier films.

Huang Xiao Ming Becomes Nervous Fan

The Last Tycoon was the first time in which Chow Yun Fat and Huang Xiao Ming starred in the film together. Both actors rose to fame after playing the character of “Hui Man Keung” in two different television versions of The Bund <上海滩>. With the two handsome actors wearing similarly styled cheungsams on the filming set of The Last Tycoon, it was a sight to behold!

Working with the legendary Fat Gor, Huang Xiao Ming was reduced to being a nervous fan. Xiao Ming said, “After entering the entertainment industry, I prefer to wear windbreakers and comb back my hair since watching   A Better Tomorrow <英雄本色>.  My image of a hero started with Fat Gor. When I see him, it is as if I had returned back to my 17-year-old self. I’m quite nervous!”

Neither Fat Gor nor Huang Xiao Ming will be portraying the character of “Hui Man Keung” in The Last Tycoon. Despite their image resemblance, the pair will not be portraying father and son in the movie either.

Jayne: Due to Francis Ng’s involvement in “The Last Tycoon,” it was rumored that TVB had delayed the starting film date of “Triumph in the Skies 2.” Chow Yun Fat and Huang Xiao Ming do look like father and son due to similar wardrobe styles.

  1. Yeah, Francis didn’t want to miss an opportunity to film with Fat Gor.

    1. I don’t blame him. Filming with Fat Gor is some serious opportunity while making another TVB series is eh. His choice is obvious.

      1. absolutely..! besides he’s always more into films and movies, reckon he made the right move 🙂

  2. I love Huang Xiao Ming as Hui Man Keung. He was HANDSOMEEEEE in that series. My favorite role of him.

    1. HXM’s performance in new Shanghai Bund did not impressed me at all. I found him posing more than acting his gritty character. He seemed to care more about looking cool on screen than be the character.

      1. Claimine,
” I found him posing more than acting his gritty character. He seemed to care more about looking cool on screen than be the character.”

That is also partially the director’s fault for encouraging it. Mainland China is developing its own generation of powerhouse idols and HXM is leading the pack.

      2. From my POV, the mainland “powerhouse idols” such as HXM and Feng Shao Feng that is being developed heartily to represent mainland are becoming generic: focusing on cool and handsome looks onscreen.

I appreciate Wen Zhang and Liu Ye “brand” more. Their looks are less “cool and handsome” but I like their style of acting and broad range of characters that they can fit into.

      3. I’m afraid that the “beautiful” Wallace Huo is becoming another HXM or Feng Shao Feng due to his remarkably pale and beautiful looks.

      4. “I’m afraid that the “beautiful” Wallace Huo is becoming another HXM or Feng Shao Feng due to his remarkably pale and beautiful looks.”

What exactly do you mean by that? And Wallace Huo’s beautiful looks can’t be compared to HXM which is surgery made and Feng Shao Feng who is at best sorta chubby looking.

      5. Funn, what I mean is afraid he might soon be utilized to look “cool and handsome” onscreen the way mainland are utilizing HXM and Feng Shao Feng now.

I admit here that Wallace Huo is pleasant to watch onscreen. Yummy 😀

      6. HXM more known for his looks LOL. Not his acting

      7. Ah, shucks. I actually adored Feng Shao Feng in Schemes of a Beauty – the only highlight for me during that whole snoozefest. Shame they’re trying to mine gold so desperately now, especially after the “success” of Gong.

I really don’t care for HXM as an actor though.

      8. “Funn, what I mean is afraid he might soon be utilized to look “cool and handsome” onscreen the way mainland are utilizing HXM and Feng Shao Feng now.”

I am afraid he already is. However hopefully whilst utilized to look cool ad handsome he has a character to play who happens to be cool or handsome. So far so good.

I still can’t get over the fact that THAT is HXM in the picture. My only first thought was “Angelababy has been sucking him dry…” but then maybe he did some “upgrade” recently. He looks so different even from his Yue Fei trailers and all. Bad camera angle? Make up? Because his eyes is smaller. I know he is a small guy but he looks tiny!

  3. “Recent tabloids accused Fat Gor of his despotic and uncooperative attitude on the filming set, in which Wong Jing rushed to clarify that Fat Gor only received the utmost respect from everyone.”

I don’t believe this. Chow Yun Fat is not a diva and that’s a well-known fact.

    1. If anything like Jackie he is only a diva on a hollywood sets and Hollywood deserves that sort of treatment.

  4. Is it only me or does anyone notice that HXM often have different face? He looks different in the above pic with smaller eyes and thinner face structure, I could understand the thinner face structure might due to his weight loss but smaller eyes?

Is it some botox or PS failure or what?

    1. I did not recognize HXM in the picture right away. He sure looks very different with his makeover.

    2. His botox is expiring soon. Ha ! Ha ! it could be lol !

      1. HXM is so young but still no appealing look compared to these two veteran actors’ good looking.

  5. Is that Huang Xiaoming in the picture? Because I swear he was tiny during that Shanghai festival thing. Probably standing on a box.

And yes the face is different. If it is him all I can say is weight loss, powder, make up.

  6. Is HXM taking botox? He looks like it and he looks different LOL

    1. i think he is taking botox.
he is handsome but his face looks unnatural

  7. Never got into that whole HXM craze. I prefer Wallace Ho’s looks. Pity he is not so popular.

I walked by a Louis Koo ad recently and was like what happened. He looked old and worn out. Nothing like A step into the past.

    1. i thought Louis Koo looked best when filming for TVB. He now looks haggard and skinny. WTF!

  8. tell me why i am evn botherng look at ths news…

  9. This is great news! All three guys in the movie are guys I like! Two Hui Man Keungs in the same movie! hehe.

  10. Chow Yuen Fatt is good, I really miss watching his show.

  11. Hey! You forget about Sammo Hung! He is also starring!
