Top Hong Kong Films During Lunar New Year Holiday

Over the Lunar New Year holiday, box office sales were strong at local theaters. Stand by Me Doraemon <Stand by Me:多啦A夢> was the family favorite.  Louis Koo‘s (古天樂) Triumph in the Skies <衝上雲霄> and Chow Yun Fat‘s (周潤發) From Vegas to Macau 2 <賭城風雲II> were two heavily hyped films which local viewers flocked to see as well.

Producer Wong Jing (王晶) is delighted with From Vegas to Macau 2‘s strong box office results and will hold a banquet to celebrate later. Cast member, Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) said that she will also be meeting with Chow Yun Fat for a dinner gathering, which was arranged prior to the film’s opening. Carina said, “Of course, I’m happy about the great box office results, as I can also shine in its halo!”

Regarding Triumph in the Skies’s strong performance in local theaters, Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) commented, “I’m very happy over the healthy box office. It’s a great start for the Year of the Ram. Thanks to the audience’s support!”

Although seven films were released in Mainland China during the New Year, Jackie Chan’s (成龍) Dragon Blade <天將雄師> and From Vegas to Macau 2 dominated box office sales from February 19 to 21:.

    1. Lilian – I totally agreed. They should have made a movie based on this couple alone because Francis Ng and Sammi has zero chemistry and as for Julian and the young girl…no words

    1. He did lose a lot of weight but no way his face so smooth. Must be seriously touch up photo.

      1. Nah Chow Yun Fat lost alot of weight and had filter on plus a little photo shop to make face look smoother.

  1. I cant wait to watch From Vegas to Macau 2 as well love a good laugh!!!

    1. Those who watch From Vegas to Macau, make sure to stay tuned until the very end, as they threw in a surprise at the end that is sure to please fans of the ORIGINAL God of Gamblers film (the very first installment back in the 90s that started the gambling movie craze).  I actually haven’t watched the movie yet (so I’m not sure whether the surprise appears before the credits or after), but I heard from some friends who did watch and they couldn’t stop talking about how ecstatic they were!

      1. Aww thanks jane. I should’ve been more clear. I mean where can I watch it online? 🙂

  2. Interestingly, “From Macau to Vegas 2” is the only film that has done well in both HK and Mainland.

The much hyped TIT2 sucked wind in the Chinese box office as the Mainland is currently immersed in the “young love” fad; they have no stomach for any middle-age romance flick like TIT.

    1. I heard the total opposite! But I still think its worth watching. 🙂

      1. Me too. heard of the opposite. Perhaps those tat into love story will like it whereas those not will say otherwise? after all, everyone has difference preference.

  3. TITS movie was a prolonged music video. Yawn. Did no justice to Cpt Cool as he was overshadowed and had far less screen time than Louis Koo.

    1. I agree with you that it is like a MV of TITS. Not saying the screentime is fair or unfair but the content isnt consistent. I feel like watched a hot pot.

  4. Watched From Vegas to Macau 2, had me rolling all the way. Yes, slap-stick comedy but hey, it’s the typical lunar new year comedy. Totally star-studded.

  5. i thought fatgor would be blacklisted by mainland ppl after his openly support to student-protest in hk,but it seems he has more starpower than chapman to and anthony wong.

    1. fat gor did not openly support the protest. he like andy lau, gem, and other stars, didnt want police to hurt the students. chapman to and anthony wong both openly supported the movement along with other artists. the students also got blacklisted from entering mainland china now.

    2. Chow Yun Fatt already a star in 1970an in TVB and movie while Anthony wong only made his name in movies and Chapman to is kelefe in ATV ,Chapman popular now because of his wife ,Kristian Tin this this short guy can’t really act, however his acting skill is better thanthat TVB rich kelefe Wong Choo Nam .

      1. First, Chapman and Kristin are quite equal in term of fame. Second, Chapman isnt in ATV now. Third, WCL is far from a kelefe in anywhere.

  6. I will watch “From Vegas to Macau 2” even if the story is silly because I luv Fat Gor and Carina. And if Andy’s in it, even better!

    1. Stick around until the end of the movie, as there is a God of Gamblers reunion scene featuring Chow Yun Fat and Andy Lau thrown in as a surprise gift for audiences. Andy only had a small cameo reprising his role of Little Dagger from the original movie, but for fans of the movie, that’s enough to being back great memories!

  7. The new reincarnated of hk artists had returned with new replacements:
    chow yuen fatt= louise koo
    andy lau = raymond lam
    tony leung = bosco wong
    francis ng = ron ng
    dodo cheng = kate tsui
    maggie siu = tavia yeung
    ekin cheng = him law
    maggie siu =tavia yeung
eric tsang = wong cho lam
    sean lau = kenneth ma
    lee sau yuen=shawn yue

  8. A reboot of “a better of tomorrow”
    starring-chow yun fat,louis koo,raymond lam

    sounds ideal

    1. with all respect but i think cyf is too old now to play this role once more. im afraid there are no other actors in hk can do fatgor’s role that can convince me,his charisma in this movie is unmatched.also a suitable succesor for leslie is hard to find, maybe louis koo can portray leslie’s role 10 years ago but he is too old now.and for the role of ti lung i think michael mui would be a good choice.
