TVB Rising Star, Cheung Wing Hong, Romances Myolie Wu in “Walking With You”

After 12 years of playing small supporting roles in various films and television dramas, Cheung Wing Hong (張穎康) will finally hit the spotlight in TVB’s upcoming romantic drama Walking with You <陪着你走>.  The 32-year-old has replaced a role recently vacated by Vincent Wong (王浩信), who is currently tied to filming obligations for prison drama, Battle of Tomorrow <再戰明天>. Promoted as the second male lead, Cheung Wing Hong will reportedly take over 10 episodes of screen time in Walking with You.

It was a slow climb for Cheung Wing Hong. He debuted as a commercial model in 2001, but his big-screen debut did not come until 2003, when he was scouted by Andy Lau (劉德華), who offered him a supporting role in the 2003 romantic comedy, Cat and Mouse <老鼠愛上貓>. Due to his close mentor-student relationship with Andy, the Hong Kong media dubbed Cheung Wing Hong as “the godson of Andy Lau”.

In 2006, under the recommendation of Andy, Cheung Wing Hong joined TVB and debuted in the 2007 dance drama Steps <舞動全城>. Cheung Wing Hong spent the next few years playing small background characters until 2009, when he was offered a supporting role in the 2010 crime drama Mysteries of Love <談情說案>. Many TVB producers admired Cheung Wing Hong’s patient and effortless acting, leading more producers to offer him more significant supporting roles in 2011. In 2012, Cheung Wing Hong caught the viewers’ attention with his endearing character in the time traveling series, Back to the Three Kingdoms <回到三國>. His presence in television slowly increased thereafter.

Walking with You, which stars popular TVB artistes Moses Chan (陳豪), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Evergreen Mak (麥長青), and Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), is an inspirational series about Phoebe (Myolie), a blind woman with a clear mind, and Kelvin (Moses), a successful advertising director who finds life unfulfilling. Cheung Wing Hong portrays Phoebe’s live-in boyfriend, who later breaks up with her. With over 10 episodes of screen time, Cheung Wing Hong’s role is considered as the series’ second male lead.

According to reports, producer Andy Chan (陳耀全), who worked with Cheung Wing Hong in his series Swipe Tap Love <愛我請留言>, saw great potential in Cheung Wing Hong and immediately cast him in Walking with You  when Vincent Wong turned his role down.

Myolie Wu Thinks Cheung Wing Hong Is Not Good Enough?

Last Friday was Cheung Wing Hong’s first day on the set of Walking with You. Shooting at a sports facility in Tai Hang, Cheung Wing Hong’s first scene was with lead star, Myolie Wu. Andy was also on set to watch over him. During filming, Cheung Wing Hong appeared nervous, frequently committed outtakes, and after each camera take, the director would stop shooting and patiently offer him words of guidance. The scene, which only had two pages of dialogue, took several hours to complete.

As Cheung Wing Hong is good friends with Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Myolie’s ex-boyfriend, gossip reports claimed that Myolie had an irrational dislike twoards Cheung Wing Hong because of his close relationship with Bosco. She reportedly got extremely impatient with Cheung Wing Hong on set, and complained to others that Cheung Wing Hong “was not good enough” to be her romantic co-star. An insider said, “Once Myolie heard that the role was suddenly given to Cheung Wing Hong, her lips twitched and asked if it was true that Vincent Wong was too busy to do the role. The producer strongly supported Cheung Wing Hong, so she had no choice but to stay quiet.”

In a brief interview after shooting ended, Cheung Wing Hong admitted, “It’s true. I am not good enough! I will work hard and do better!” He added that Myolie was very kind to him, told him not to be so anxious, and also offered him some acting advice.

  1. i like him, he’s feng gung in the silver tongue drama. good actor. got charisma.

  2. I think it must have been just nerves, his first encounter with the leading lady who is already biased towards him and the producer wAtching his every move. Must have been terrible for the poor chap!

  3. I like him … and if what they print about Myolie is true, she’s loosing points in my eyes, not that she cares, or anyone care for that matter, but i just want to say it.

  4. Wish him the best as I believe he is a hardworking actor who deserves to have a chance at success. Hopefully Myolie Wu can be a professional and be fair towards him. Though I can empathize with Myolie’s natural dislike towards a friend of the ex, I do not agree with her actions of making it difficult for Cheung Wing Hong. I’m hoping this news is not true.

    1. Well, I think Cheung Wing Hong basically said it was not true since: “He added that Myolie was very kind to him, told him not to be so anxious, and also offered him some acting advice.” lol
Both Bosco and Myolie are very professional. It was fine when Bosco worked with Nancy, Mandy, and Elaine so I doubt it would be a problem for Myolie to work with him.

      1. While I’m no huge fan of Myolie (she is okay to me though), I doubt she would be lacking in class to that extent. If it were Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee, then maybe, but Myolie? Even Jonathan Cheung himself said that Myolie tried to help and she was kind to him. Having said that, I’m glad that he is slowly getting bigger and more prominent roles. He might not be the best actor around (pales in comparison to Vincent Wong in my opinion, but he does have charisma and potential, and he’s not bad-looking either.

  5. Good for him, although I think Evergreen is more the 2nd lead male in this series…

  6. I’m definitely looking forward to this then!

  7. The first time I noticed him was from Beyond the Realm of Conscience where he was the servant of Moses. I find Jonathan a very humble person and someone who works hard to act well, BUT I think he needs to tone down that either chok or cool acting style. Just my opinion.

  8. Loved him in Coffee Cat Mama! He looked dead serious every time he came onscreen yet he was so funny! He did a spectacular job portraying Fan Fat.

  9. Um… I don’t think he was in mysteries of love.

  10. i never noticed him before back to the 3 kingdoms, where he was pretty much the only good thing in the drama.

i don’t think he meant ‘it’s true, myolie said that’ but rather ‘it’s true he’s not good enough.’ Very humble and grounded. Really like him.

    1. I like Jonathan alot as well. I first started to notice him in Three Kingdoms as well and liked most of his subsequent performances after that. After watching the Green Room interview that he did together with his wife Angie, I like and respect him even more.

Though I feel that the tabloids are exaggerating by saying that Jonathan is ‘second male lead’ in this series (I highly doubt TVB will give him a lead role so soon), I AM glad to see that he’s getting more recognition. Hope to continue seeing more of him in series!

  11. Started noticing him as ‘Fahn Gahn’ in 3K, then ‘Fahn Gahng’ in Silver Tongue, and most recently as ‘Fahn Faht’ in Coffee Cat. Looking forward to all of his future works!

    1. Wow, u must be a fan. I have only watched Coffee Mama.

  12. omg! FanFAt was the best character in that aside from Bao Zho Goong

  13. wOW THat’s awesome for CWH! i like watching him, he is handsome and good actor.
Those reporter make Myolie sound likes a Diva. I quite doubt it.

  14. He is a great actor! He doesn’t overact, but acts just right. I’ve always liked his character and demeanor in series. Wish him all the best in the near future! Looking forward to seeing him in more series, especially playing lead!
