Myolie Wu’s Maternal Role in “Overdo”

The new Republican-era Chinese drama Overdo (這一秒過火), starring Zhang Linghe (張凌赫) and Wang Churan (王楚然) started off on the wrong footing but has gone on to top both China’s Maoyan popularity chart for television dramas and iQIYI Taiwan’s viewership rankings.

The latest episodes have taken a heartbreaking turn — after Zhang Linghe’s character kills the patriarch of the Huo family and helps Wang Churan’s character take revenge, he is “whipped” by his mother, played by Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), who demands that he hand over the Huo family fortune he has secretly hidden away.

Myolie’s Character Murong Qingyi Hates Her Own Son

The tense confrontation between mother and son unfolds before Wang Churan’s character, who is forced to watch helplessly because she is in no position to intervene. Off-screen, however, Myolie Wu has amusingly become one of the leading supporters of the drama’s central romance, recently making a surprise appearance in iQIYI’s live-comment section where she wrote, “I support them dancing another round.”

When the episode reached the scene in which she whipped Zhang Linghe, Wu hurriedly posted a “disclaimer”, insisting that the actions shown had nothing to do with Myolie Wu herself. Her comment left viewers in stitches.

Cheng Jinzhi had never raised Murong Qingyi when he was young, and also blamed him for her husband’s death and had therefore always despised him. Following the Huo family incident, years of unresolved resentment and disputes surrounding Murong Qingyi’s background resurface, further worsening the relationship between mother and son. Cheng Jinzhi finally lowers the whip only after Murong Qingyu, played by Fu Xinbo (), steps in front of his younger brother to protect him.

Making matters even more painful, Ren Susu and Murong Qingyi had only recently reconciled. Murong Qingyi even told her over the telephone, “Let’s never be separated again.”

Before Murong Qingyi returns, however, Ren Susu’s adoptive father, Uncle Fang, is murdered. Determined to avenge both the Fang and Ren families, she still chooses to marry Murong Qingyu, setting the stage for even more emotional turmoil in the episodes ahead.
