Charmaine Sheh Refuses to Star in TVB Version of “My Love From the Star”

Korean science fiction drama, My Love From the Star <來自星星的你>, proved to be extremely successful and influential. Sensing its power to attract numerous fans, TVB reportedly has plans to film its own version. It was alleged that the role of Cheon Song Yi, originally played by Korean actress Gianna Jun, would be given to Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼). However, afraid that she would become the target of angry netizens, Charmaine reportedly turned down the offer.

An insider spilled, “Although Charmaine is fit to portray Cheon Song Yi, she is sure to garner criticism no matter how well she does, because the original series had been such a big hit. She turned down the role to avoid audience disappointment.” At the moment, Charmaine is under a two-year contract with TVB, in which it has been made clear that the Mainland market is her priority. Perhaps only filming one TVB series per year, it is not unreasonable for her to turn down an offer, since she just completed Line Walker <使徒行者>.

With Charmaine aside, many netizens made additional suggestions regarding who should take the role. Many claimed that Fala Chen (陳法拉) physically resembles Cheon Song Yi, while others believe Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) is suitable. Male netizens remarked that Eliza Sam (岑麗香) is cute, and Niki Chow’s (周麗淇) performance would be well received by the audience.

In terms of choosing the male lead to portray Kim Soo Hyun’s beloved role as Professor Do Min Joon, many netizens agreed Raymond Lam (林峯) matches the most. Furthermore, he is popular in Mainland China and would less likely be the target of criticism. However, Raymond is currently busy preparing for his upcoming concerts and may not have room in his schedule. According to tabloids, it is highly likely that Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) would take the role, since he had plenty of experience filming different love stories.

    1. Yes…tvb…says YES! they are using so many strategies to get their rating up and running again. cant blame emm…sadly none of them are working well. they need to recruit more talented ppl, to write unique scripts, portray the character, and have the best judgement director…what happen to the ppl nowadays? ppl in 1980-1990s in tvb were so awesome!!!

    2. I think put Kate Tsui and Raymond together. Both ooze the require class and charm needed to pull the series.

  1. no one can replace Kim Soo Hyun and Gianna! no i refuse to accept a remake!

    1. Lol is this series really that good you make me want to watch it.

      1. It was good, and entertaining. But I wouldnt say its the best kdrama that I’ve seen. I’m a big fan of Moon Embracing the Sun and all the cast, everything but watching Man from Stars made me realize just how stiff soo hyun is. I understand hes an alien and more on the conservative side but when I watch him, I see kim soo hyun not do minjo. Whereas when I watch jianna act, I see cheon song yi not jianna. In addition, the ending left me with many questions. D8 I have to say though that there were many times where I enjoyed the scenery along with the early episodes.

  2. NOOO! ANY REMAKE ISN’T AS BEST AS THE ORIGINAL ONE !

  3. Tbh, I don’t think any TVB actress can pull off what Jun Ji Hyun did with her character. And TVB definitely won’t be able to do what the original did with its special effects.

  4. hi there

    1. for goodness sake, tvb.
    2. you got the gumption, just do something not copied from else where hoh.

    1. There running out of ideas and good producers retired or went to china by now. There lacking good ideas and scripts.

  5. Both too old for the role esp Raymond Lam??? Gosh, TVB is really desperate and lacking in artists to pick Raymond Lam for that younger guy role? Seriously insane.
I don’t get the hype w/the korean version thou. Well, perhaps I have never been a korean drama fan.

    1. Dude the main guy is a freaking alien, he lived for 100 of years. Plus Raymond is only older than Kim Soo Hyun 3 years. I don’t think it is a younger guy role.

      1. Never mind. Sorry I calculated it wrong but it is still not a younger guy role. I think a older guy would do a good job too

  6. I can see Charmaine and Raymond being the leads, however TVB please do not make it…It will be incomparable to the original for sure

  7. I’m SICK of Raymond and Charmaine all the time. Just No! Anyways, I would watch a remark for the fun of it. However, It will never be as good as original.

  8. She’d rather spend the time taking holidays and viewing properties for investment, tbh.

  9. Eliza is overrated, in terms of looks and acting

  10. Whoever came up with the idea of remaking MLFTS, is an absolute dump*ss. MLFTS is an idol drama whereas TVB series is basically focusing on specific topic.

  11. I think in looks wise sharon chan is the most suitable candidate

  12. … still dont get why the drama is so popular LOL did not end up finishing the whole drama. the storyline is not original.
kim soo hyun acting is not that great and he is so overrated lol
but jun ji hyun was good for sure.

    1. Copy Emergency Couple instead 😛 Would wanna see the Hong Kong version of Choi Jin Hyuk and my favourite Mong Ji, Song Ji Hyo 😀

      1. Hi are you the same LDWYL from playpark?

  13. Ugh Charmaine Sheh and Raymond Lam are a far cry worse than Jun Ji Hyun and Kim so Hyun. I can imagine the TVB version will be a disaster.

  14. Both Raymond and Charmaine are too old for the roles! The netizens must be their fans.

TVB is copycat! This will be a disaster production!

  15. I don’t know why that drama is so popular. It’s just a regular idol romantic drama with a handsome young actor xD the plot doesn’t have anything special and so does his acting

  16. come on hong kong, dont just copy others, (no taste at all!). make me sick! use ur imagination to create a new drama, why need to copy others? you shamed our chinese ethnic pride!

  17. No matter how good her acting, she can’t make the “TVB Version” good

  18. wow good for charmaine sheh!!!!!!!!! and i support always
i willlllll never forget about charmaine sheh!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

  19. It’s the WRONG MOVE TVB! No remakes can save your station declining ratings!

  20. At least they did not pick Bob and Sai Sai Lup to do the tvb version 😀 it’s a good thing!!

  21. the reason why this drama is so popular is because of the korean idol kim soo hyun,he is extremely popular in korea as well in hongkong, the drama itself is nothing special.so i doubt if raymond can get the same effect as him.tvb have done many copies in the past but none of them were a hit.when will tvb learn that copies are never good.

  22. TVB’s cow has been milked dry… Now they are trying to get another cow to milk.

    1. Well said HTS. Although I must say Never Dance Alone is quite good. But I do think it’s because of Eric Chan’s vision, and leadership in recruiting and guiding a great team. TVB just rushed things through and would not have prepare well in advance.

  23. it will be good if we can see myolie & kevin cheng (hope he is not too old for this role)

  24. Anyone ever think of Leila Tong Ling. She looks like cheong soong Yi from different angle of view

  25. i would watch it if it’s charmine and raymond lam. i think they will match the role really well. the female lead is supposed to be mid age and the has a bossy attitude. charmine has played similar roles before. the male lead is supposed to look younger and educated, raymond had played prof king years back.
fala won’t play the role well, she lacks the acting skills. linda lacks charisma and her acting is unconvincing. kathy has yet to showed her bossy and sassy sides in any drama to date. eliza is really cute and is simply too young for the role.
bosco may do okay for the role, but his image is too flirty and playboy. i can see him do well in the role but his image is not as clean as raymond law. that’s how i feel.

    1. i’d watch it considering i only watched 2 episodes of the original. i am not a fan of shows i don’t understand the language.

      1. The female lead supposes to be in her late twenty, not mid thirty. Thus, I do think Charmaine is too old to play the role. And does not that carry the drop dead gorgeous image.

Jun Ji Hyun’s character is not only bossy, but she is lovable, funny, and every men dream gf in term of look. She is simple minded but yet cunning when it come to dealing with her frenemy. She, to me, carries the character extremely well. Any lessen actress would make her character comes off as annoying. I doubt either Charmaine or Fala would do the role justice. Look at Fala’s Holiday, an epic fail (to me). She comes off as super annoying.

As much as I like Raymond Lam, but I cannot imagine him playing Kim So Hyun’s role. It will be like seeing Kingsley from Mystery of Love all over again. And he would look too old for the character as well.

  26. well i was thinking raymond and michelle would be a good couple.

  27. I just finished watching the series. Its comical and Cheon Song Yi is a very interesting character. But seriously, let the drama be. Why every TV stations around Asia are dying to make their own version. No matter what original is the best. On the other hand, the person best fit to play Cheon Song Yi is Sammi Cheng. Choi with her physical movements, her mood and her attitude resemble a lot like characters Sammi played. For the main male character, im not against Raymond but look alike doesn’t mean he can carry the role. Plus, the drama he is filming now already have a look alike haircut of Do Min Joon. I still can’t think who from HK can play the Manager Do character.

    1. Also, these TV stations should write their own script and show more originality Pls…NOT trying to copy a successful version of other dramas. And I am personally annoyed also that everytime a drama has a good response from audience then it is like almost always a film spinoff need to be made.

  28. Smart Charmaine on not accepting the role. First of all, I don’t think TVB can produce any drama close to the original standards. Secondly, there are better and original stories to do rather than a remake. Thirdly, and luckily she didn’t accept the role as personally I don’t like the character. To me, she is too noisy.

  29. Why don’t they cast that older model and Bosch Wong since hk was uncritical of the fictional age difference?

  30. What is the TVB thinking? How could they copied the Korean version? No way!

  31. Jeon Ji-hyeon 전지현 (Gianna Jun…real name Wang Zhixian 全智贤吧)
    she is from China …

    1. she’s korean. where did you get the information she’s from china?

        her origin is chinese,
        most people know this

    2. She is not from China, but all Korean artists have a Chinese name as well because it gets translated. Her origin is not Chinese. Kieran’s just like many other Asian countries are Chinese influenced. But if you go way back maybe other Asians did originate from China, who really knows? But as of now she is Korean.

      1. She is ethnically Chinese but nationality is Korean.

      2. shes chinese-korean lol she introduced herself as wang ji hyeon then changed her last name to Jun ji hyeon when she debuted as an actress. she first admitted that she was Chinese-korean, but later denied it. that why there was an controversy and stuff about it. it was while ago

      3. Koreans do not originate from China. But there are chinese who move to Korea eons ago. I don’t see what’s the fuss.

      4. Because Koreans are nationalistic. They looked down on Chinese people studying & working in Korea. So people would rather not talk abt JJH Chinese roots.

Not that Chinese doesn’t look down on other nationalities working in their country.

  32. When will tvb realize that remake don’t attract viewers… We love, and only love, Kim soo hyun and jianna.

  33. TVB your better off spending the $ on better script writers and working conditions than remaking a a popular drama. Hopefully then your artists will stay on and improve in their acting. Tvb dramas r fetting boring. Oh and heres another tip dont give away the endings of your dramas keep them a hush if u want ur audience to watch it. Feeling disappointed in TVB

  34. Sheh shouldn’t return to TVB. She should pursue film industry & mainland China.

  35. i think nikki is best for this role hands-down.

cheon song yi has spunk and nikki does REALLY well with that; plus they do look similar and nikki can pull off a natural look very well.

i honestly dont know who to play the guy though. do min joon looked way too young in the drama…so i would think a young, fresh looking tvb actor is probably best for the part. let’s admit it – the star of the show was cheon song yi. dmj was just the appetizer.

  36. No… No was all I could think of when I read the title. Charmeine is smart for turning it down

  37. copy again! it might either work out very well…or fall very badly…I love Raymond Lam…i am his big fans…sooooo don’t want him to take a risk like this…he might get more hater since a lot of a lot a lot of people really in love of the orginial film!

    1. Dont be worried, he will not take it because he fulfilled one series with Txb.

      1. good…it is not worth to take this low pay and high risk job from TVB…he can just take another drama from China, more concert, or more movie…those give him more money! just have one drama per year in tvb is good enough!

  38. NO to the remake and NO to the original. Korean dramas are awful and remakes won’t make them any better. I guess originality really is dead at TVB.

  39. Lam Fung and Sheh are smart to reject the series! Anyone who agree to film this remake are fool because it’s obvious they will be hated! TVB cheap remake can’t compare to original no matter who stars in the remake!

  40. Though it’s hard to outdo the original cast, is that all TVB have left for lead male actors? I kind of want them to cast someone new.

  41. 1. No to the remake
    2. If Linda Chung was chosen, holy ****, this would ruin Hong Kong and TVB. Talk about an epic fail of an actress with irritating character portrayals. On second thought, she would fit right in
    3. Raymond Lam? He is the second coming of Leon Lai as an actor. On second thought he would fit right in
    4. Since this remake would be a disaster anyway, cast Raymond and Linda. For good measure, they need to add Fala Chen acting as some kind of Westernized HongKonger character to this remake to sink this ship like a muthaf*cker

  42. Lmfao this remake is going to fail terribly.

  43. I want Kenneth Ma and Fala Chen as a couple in this sitcom.

  44. I watched and adore this drama, but to be honest it’s starting to be a bit overrated now that every broadcast station has to have their very own version. It’s a good love dubby drama but nothing else can beat the original if anyone were to make a remake. I believe the main success of this drama was because of the KSH & JJH. I get why would TVB would be inspired to do such a thing but it would be better if they just stay inspired by it and hopefully writers will find a good storyline of their own.

  45. LOLOLOL NO. Are the producers of TVB stupid or are they just uncreative? Seriously, this is like the American version of Boys over Flowers.
Props to Charmine for turning the role down.

  46. NO HK ACTRESS CAN COMPARE OR EXCEED THE ORIGINAL KOREAN ONE!!!

IF ANY MALE HK ACTOR TAKES THE ROLE, ALL ANYONE CAN SAY IS “CHOK, CHOK, CHOK… CHOKING!!!”

  47. Of course they would make their own version. No originality whatsoever. Typical TVB. Move along folks. Let’s hope for better dramas down the year.
