TVB To Launch New Record Label

Hong Kong media outlets reported TVB is planning to establish a new record label sometime in the near future. Known as Stars Dream Entertainment, it is said that TVB plans to sign their own managed artists, including Raymond Lam (林峯), Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), and Voice of Star’s <星夢傳奇> high-point king Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘) into the label.

With Stars Dream Entertainment, TVB hopes to cultivate its own artists into successful singers and well-rounded performers, much like how popular TVB idols were manufactured in the 1980s. To showcase fairness, TVB asserted that their music award program, Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards, will have its winners based entirely on popular votes.

It was reported that TVB has already approached Raymond Lam about contract negotiations. As Raymond’s management contract with TVB expires in early 2014, rumors say that TVB hopes to convince Raymond to renew his management with the new record deal.

It has also been said that TVB has the means to promote Fred Cheng as Stars Dream Entertainment’s number one brother. Fred shot to fame after scoring the highest marks on the reality singing competition Voice of Stars.

In regards to the launch of the new record label, Fred said, “I don’t know. I can sign with any record label. I’m patiently waiting for arrangements by management.”

Fred joined the industry after winning TVB’s New Talent Singing Awards in 2003. Considered as a young “green leaf” actor at TVB, Fred considered retiring from showbiz, until 2013’s Voice of Stars, where he scored standing ovations with his singing performances.

Asked if he would consider leaving acting to pursue a career in singing, Fred said, “I’ve filmed so many dramas over the past ten years. I can’t choose! I’ll see what the company arranges for me.”

With the support he is getting from TVB, does Fred consider his up-and-coming singing career to be a guaranteed success? “I haven’t thought that far yet. Right now, I just want to concentrate on working on my performances for the [Voice of Stars] finale!”

As for Linda Chung, who currently has a singing contract with Stars Shine International, said, “I am a TVB artist. Of course I will support the new record label. It’s good to have a bigger platform for artists to develop, but I don’t know how to plan [my arrangements] because I still have a couple of years left in my contract with Stars Shine International.”

  1. if TVB really does promote Fred and makes him a star with their own TVB label, i am ALL for it! i’m so excited that Fred is getting recognition and being promoted to “first brother” and finally having his dreams come true at TVB and be able to act and sing and do the things he wants
….HOWEVER, if TVB is only using this for their own benefits and will bring Fred up only to neglect him, i would much rather Fred find a different record label and not be under TVB.

    1. I’m quite worried that Fred will follow the steps of Michael Tse. With Laughing Gor, they milked the popularity dry and yet it seems Michael still hasn’t (and may never) really reached that “peak” in his career.

      1. Well of course tvb milks someone popularity till its dry it helps the artist make money so what’s the big deal when the artist is pretty much happy with it at the time

      2. Not everyone is milked dry. Maybe he’ll be the lucky one like Ray. Plus, he’s still young and has many years to go, but Michael is older, so young audience will only like him for a while when he had a good role in a teenage capturing Police drama.

    2. I don’t think that would happen. With Eric Moo as Fred’s mentor/see fu for music, Eric Moo would probably have some say in choosing the right label for Fred and besides nothing’s 100% written down. And this music label probably won’t happen until the finale of Voice of Stars!

And i personally think that TVB is aware that in their company, there are hidden talents who can sing well. 🙂

      1. Yes, if Fred is smart he should ask for advice from Eric Moo and use it to his advantage. He should not blindly sign with TVB as they don’t necessarily have the best songwriter and producer.

Actually TVB should really focus on improving their drama production and scriptwriting before dabbling in the record industry.

      2. Fred must sign with a record label who is willing to let him explore his own artistic side, stick with him and promote him. And that begins with a producer who believes in him. 1st album is always win or lose but if the co sticks with him hopefully he will have a career like Alan Tam and gang.

      3. @Puff: He is smart because even in Voice of Stars, he’s asking Eric Moo for advice such as how to choose songs, etc. 🙂 And yeah, they should focus on their drama production as well xD

@Funn: I agree but I think that if Fred Cheng’s songs are composed by either Johnny Yim or Tang Chi Wai, it should be beneficial.

    3. Totally agree with the 2nd part of your comment. The problem is, if something bad happens like maybe going on bad terms with TVB, and TVB neglects him, then not only will his acting career be affected, but also his singing career. Is he signs with a diff company then his singing career might still be ok.

  2. This is good news! It seems that TVB has carefully considered Eric Moo’s suggestion in creating their own music label.

Rather or not Fred Cheng is the “number one brother”, I feel that, itself, is another matter, not that important/crucial. I just hope that Fred Cheng and other tvb artistes who participated in the singing show (eg. Becky Lee, Corinna Chamberlain, Grace Wong, Ronald Law) can continue to show their singing talent after the finale of Voice of Stars. I really enjoyed watching their performances and it has became a routine on Sunday evenings. And of course, it is awesome to have Tang Chi Wai as the main person who is responsible for the label! Loved his composing pieces.

And regarding Kate Tsui’s singing (i know it wasn’t bought up by this article), her subtheme song in Wax and Wane was pretty good xD

    1. In my opinion, Raymond Lam and Ruco Chan are one of the top male artistes in TVB who can sing and act. Maybe they can’t act in every role, but they definitely have that charisma in them.

  3. As if those poor artists aren’t stretched thin enough, now they’re going to have to take on singing?

And, honestly, TVB doesn’t exactly have an eye for recognizing talent and they continuously put real talent to waste. I mean, come on, they promote people who can’t act…

    1. I think that with Tang Chi Wai as the main person in charge, the outcome record label shouldn’t be too bad, unless those TVB executives places restrictions on Tang Chi Wai’s ability to choose people and whatnot.

But if this label is 100% overwatched by Tang Chi Wai, tvb’s singing label would probably be in good hands. 😀

  4. Isn’t Raymond with EEG? Why would he leave EEG when they’re doing a good job with his singing career? His popularity soar after joining EEG.

    1. Because he has a really good relationship with Tang Chi Wai. Both him and Tang Chi Wai began their singing/composing careers at the same time (debuted at the same time). It was Last Breakthrough (2004 tvb drama)’s main theme song that bought attention to both of them (I think).

      1. and when raymond sings tang chi wai songs his singing career goes to the next level

  5. decent idea to promote those artists’ who do have talent in singing yet don’t get good opportunities such as Fred, Ruco etc. However, do they seriously need to ‘promote’ and sign Raymond in their potential record label? I mean he’s already got a career in the music industry…

    1. TVB is planning to establish a new record label company just to keep their artists, it is not really for talented singers. TVB just forget it, it’s not going to work. Fred should think wisely on this.

  6. I thought I read that there intention is not to poach artists that already have a record deal, but more of a partnership deal?

My best guess is that it would have the same type of setup as American Idol. They sometimes sign some of their contestants to their management label (19 Management) and sign them to their recording label (19 Recordings). Then they also co-sign with a bigger label (Sony, Columbia, Universal, etc) to help them with distribution and advertising.

  7. Only 2 of them can sing, I don’t think it’s necessary for them to launch a new record label, why not invest more of their investments on hiring scriptwriters?

    1. Because TVB is greedy and power hungry, so they want to control the music industry (in addition to already controlling the television industry and to some extent, the movie industry as well). In the past, TVB wasn’t allowed to create their own music label because of restrictions from the Broadcasting Authority (TVB Music, Inc. doesn’t really count because that music label is just to produce music for their series — there are no artists signed to that label)…now that the BA (aka Communications Authority) has loosened the restrictions, of course TVB is going to take advantage of it and dive into the music realm.

To be honest, I think it’s a horrible idea — TVB already has more than they can handle with their involvement in movies, television, and artist management (to the point that they can’t even run their company properly)….adding another ‘element’ is not going to do them any good, especially if they are going to manage it poorly like they’ve been doing with everything else….

  8. I am glad that Mr Tang Chi Wei has not forgot What he promised to Fred Cheng in episode 2 of the voice of stars. he is indeed a man of his words. Hope to have Fred album soon!

    1. i am so excited about that!! if it’s tang chi wai, i know fred is in good hands! 🙂

      1. Agreed!! 😀
Actually both Tang Chi Wai and Eric Moo stayed true to their words 🙂

  9. I actually think shirley yeung sings better than Linda. That woman surprised me

  10. Way to go TVB! You’ve come up with another scheme to lock down gifted artists/singers into your inhumane company with pay so low that they will have to find 2 jobs to make ends meet. Just like the acting artists now. Should these TVB singers sign with TVB? Yes, but do a 2 year contract first and see how it goes. Like Wayne says, “how many 10 years do you have?”

  11. I’m sorry, just because you can act, doesn’t mean you can sing. I see this as a move for TVB to further milk their audience.

    1. totally agree. Because you can act, doesn’t mean you can sing or vice versa.

      1. I agree as wellllllll some as raymond lam because even he hasn’t been on tvb……..for just a few months………he can still do like tv show or can sing songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Yeah!!!!!!!

  12. dont see much future for the new record label. linda and ray dont sing very well and myolie isnt even a singer. Dont know about fred. ray does have a good voice for sad ballads but the last two years he’s more into chok style, so did his songs. his songs isnt moving me anymore.

  13. Oh well, LF has just signed with EEG last year. Still have few years to go.

In his GZ concert of him today, it happens tat no Txb involvement in, crystal clear that Txb dun really have much job to do with his music career now. He didnt say thks to Txb, too, only Music Plus (EEG’s) and then “my company”.

    1. Ah forget to mention tat Sun ent. of Paco is sponsor and Paco was thnked.

  14. Raymond = Ballads. Ballads. ONLY BALLADS.

    Linda = No comment.

Myolie = She does have a good voice.

  15. I think Fred is so much better in singing I
Mean the voice of the stars tvb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)
