JJ Lin Puts Autobiography in “Practice Love” Music Video

JJ Lin’s (林俊傑) 10th anniversary album, Stories Untold <因你而在>, is planned for a worldwide release on March 13, 2013. After unveiling the music video of the album’s first single, “You N Me” <因你而在>, on February 18, JJ released the animated music video of his album’s second single, “Practice Love” <修煉愛情>, on March 1.

The pop ballad, which is written and produced by JJ, is dedicated to the victims of the SilkAir Flight MI185 crash in 1997, which killed all 104 people on board.

The animated music video of “Practice Love,” which is directed by award-winning director Hsu Yun Hsuan (徐筠軒), tells the story of computer programmer Jean Joseph Orban, who loses his botanist girlfriend in a spaceship accident. Missing his girlfriend dearly, Jean creates a program that allows his memories of his girlfriend to form into physical images, bringing her back into virtual existence. Helping those who have lost loved ones to live in their memories again, Jean’s program becomes a success; however, his invention causes many others to be unable to distinguish between reality and memory.

The story of the music video is based on a true story, in which JJ too had lost a close friend due to the SilkAir accident. Xu Chue Fern, a Chinese Indonesian, was a close friend of JJ’s during grade school. She had a very obvious crush on him, and would send breakfast to JJ’s house every morning. JJ’s feelings for Xu never went beyond friendship, and after months of active pursuit, JJ finally rejected Xu. Although Xu was heartbroken, she was willing to introduce one of her friends to JJ, who eventually dated JJ for two months. Xu died months later from the SilkAir plane crash.

When JJ went to send his condolences to Xu’s family, he noticed that Xu had kept a photo of JJ and herself. “Her aunt told me that I should keep the photo. Although I told [Xu] very clearly that I was not interested in dating her, and even went ahead to date her friend, she still kept that photo of me. I felt terrible.”

To this day, JJ still kept the photo of Xu. “I want to preserve my memory of her.”

The full story of “Practice Love” will be released on March 13.

  1. Love the song and love the animated music video very much. “Practice Love” is already topping Mandopop song charts!

  2. I love several of his albums, I predict this one will be another hit. Would also love to hear him do covers on other artist like in ‘She Says’. I love his version of “記得”

    1. Technically the songs from “She Says” are all written by him but sung by others. Not exactly a cover in that case XD

  3. Can’t wait for the release. I’ve always loved his voice, its so soothing.
