Jayne: Is your favorite candidate still in the 2012 Miss Hong Kong Pageant? I’m impressed by Hilary Tam’s job as a Climate Engergy Director. Otherwise, the women’s aspirations are a little bland. What does it mean to wish to become successful? It’s not specific at all.

Despite TVB’s grand plans in marketing the 40th Anniversary of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant this year, the 14 contestants have come under fire as being poor in quality. When the bikini photos of the contestants were unveiled earlier this week, Hong Kong tabloids criticized the contestants for their flat chests and flabby abdomens. Director Wong Jing (王晶) blasted TVB, “If there are no [hot] women, then do not organize the pageant!”

Responses

  1. is it just me. neither of these girl just appeal to me…

    1. i can assure you – “it’s just you”…lol

    2. @elin,

They may be not as appealing as you wanted they to be..but after TVB’s transformation, I’m sure you will find them eye-candy to you…opss I forgot to mention about “after” their exposure to “botox” and plastic surgery too..hehe

  2. My top 8 picks are Christy Chan, Gloria Chan, Carat Cheung, Wingto Lam, Melanie McAndrew, Hilary Tam, Roxanne Tong, and Jacqueline Wong. They are my fans, and I think the only one I originally liked but didn’t make it was the one that kind of reminded me of Annie Liu. I think she was number 2 or3? Forgot her name.
I really think they are trying to make this like next top model. Their profile pics have all of them in just a white tee, which is very simple, but I like them. Simple, yet they all look decent. The thing is, I think this year, they’re trying to make them undergo major transformations like a reality TV show, but surprisingly, most of these candidates actually looked quite decent in the interview rounds. I realized for the most part most of the candidates knew how to do their makeup and dress. None of them were a major disaster, but of course, those that were are the ones that did not make the cut.

    1. Oops, I meant to say they are my “fav’s” not “fans.” Damn the auto correct!

    2. Aly,
Christy Chan’s photo came out extremely well. She resembles mainland actress, Gao Yuanyuan in the photo. Her previous photos did not look as nice.

My choices are similiar to yours as well. But Hilary Tam stands out for me because of her job title.

      1. Christy does look a bit like Gao yuan yuan in that photo!

    3. Actually, Amy Cheung from New York is quite pretty too. She has a very cheerful smile.

  3. Huh, Penelope a CEO? Is her family rich or is she a CEO of a small business with less than 5 employees?

    1. Exoidus,
Anyone can register a company and be CEO. It’s not clear what type of business she is in, but hopefully it’s meaningful work and not just a title.

      1. Thanks Jayne,

She sounds ambitious which is a good thing and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s from a wealthy family due to her elegance 😀

    2. CEO sounds like a public listed company? Anyone can be a boss these days. Like Jayne! And her presence is online.

Uhhh Jayne, do you have a registered company?

  4. I can’t remember the name of my favourite but I believe she is the girl (left) in the 1st picture. I don’t see her profile… She really has a face I want to see in series. At least I think it is her. All photoshopped and make up so I can’t recognise, except for short hair.

    1. Sorry! I see the label after the intro! Christy! At least all are upgraded education wise, with diplomas and degrees. I think she is the girl. I hope she speaks well and can act. Then I am very happy!

  5. as some has said before, I’m curious about the resumes some of these girls have. A director at 24? and one as a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) at 25? really? That’s some pretty incredible stuff if true…. unless it is in regard a family business or something in that nature 🙂 Penelope is still my favourite – although Gloria and Roxanne also took nice photos.

  6. Christy immediately stands out to me because of her hairstyle.

Is Penelope’s surname very rare? This is the first time I’m seeing someone surnamed Pin.

    1. it was used as Linda Chung’s name in a tvb series recently 🙂 I think it was Pin Yuk Yin for Linda.

I like that surname. It’s very unique.

    2. Yea I think her last name is uncommon too. The first time I heard it was in the TVB drama 耀舞長安 with Linda’s character (which I gave up on).

  7. Aaah yes.. I recognize Hilary Tam from the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant. (I read about the contestants from the Plem magazine before). She’s quite pretty in my opinion.

  8. awesome! all the girls that I liked last time are still here:) Hope they make it into the next round too. Melanie Mcandrew, Christy Chan, Gloria Chan, Wingto Lam, and Jacqueline Wong are my top five!

  9. I am shocked that Carat is still in. Who has been eliminated?? I wonder when the next round of eliminations will be?? I think 4 more will go home and 12 will be left…

    1. That’s because Alfred Cheung (張堅庭) is her uncle.

    1. My top 5 from pics will be
      -Christy
      -Gloria
      -Wingto
      -Roxanne
      -Melanie Mc andrew

      1. Kinda proud of myself for having a good eye for a good TV face. From 1st moment I laid eyes on Christy, I told myself this is one face I find different. She is not ugly but she has a very memorable face that stood out from other generic looking ones. Maybe it is her hair. Now until her voice and terrible acting shatters my illusion, I shall remain positive she is the next breakout female star.

All those who aspires to be anything BUT an actress is to me lying. Why then join a beauty pageant well known for

        a. being a talent search, sort of
        b. potential bride for rich husbands

      2. And looking at these photoshopped pictures, I do find Christy the prettiest. The rest just seems… generic or something not right.

      3. I agree with you Funn! Reading those descriptions sound a bit fake to me. I think the only one telling the truth is Roxanne. But for her it is not that shocking since her father and uncle are veteran actors. Of course they all want to join the circle so that they can become an actress and hope to gain fame and fortune OR marry a rich guy and hope to be set for life.

  10. Photoshop galore!!!! Wait till you see them without photoshop. Scary stuff indeed.

    1. Yea, photoshop really makes a big difference. It is not just celebs though, even average citizens heavily rely on make up photoshop and such. How many people truly look good and decent with bare skin and regular photos? Not that many.,,

  11. Time for rich old men to start knowing these girls now……

    1. LOL, and those who refuse to do so i.e attend “dinners” will be kicked out of the competition.

  12. I was reading the tvb miss hong kong site and it seems like they have eliminated 2 more contestants, Kayley and Gloria.

  13. I am trying to figure out how Jacqueline is #1 on the TVB fansite… and Wingto is #16… it would seem my taste in women is very different from most.

Either that… or there is some shenanigans with the voting by some fans 😛

  14. Even if most of them don’t win, they are probably already qualified to film for TVB. Don’t you guys notice that often the ones that lose end up a lot more popular and successful than the ones that win?

    1. Agree, well now TVB doesn’t have a very high recruiting standard. Miss HK is like two bird with one stone.

Get supply of new blood and providing extra services for their business partners e.g sponsors etc

      1. Exoidus, do you use Raidcall or Paltalk voice chat software?

  15. Christy Chan has a sad face, each pic she looks frown.

    1. Apple,
What you said is true. Christy does look sad in her photos.

    2. Not frown just “what the hell am I doing here? I need to pose.. like this? Right?” look.

      1. Nothing wrong, just lightning and bad angle. She has a mature look and yet due to her hairstyle and sense of style she also looks her age. It may not be wrinkles but laugh lines. Give her a break.

    3. I think she’s sad that she decided to cut her hair before the event…. and the frown appears whenever she thinks about the hairdresser.

  16. I think Melanie McAndrew is the youngest of them all. When she introduced herself, she is 19 year old.

    1. Melanie McAndrew is obviously very sweet and standout among all those typical chinese chiccks here. I like this mixed “imported” gem!

Nevertheless, I would strongly advise her not to talk using any chinese/cantonese dialects at all. Otherwise, She definitely screws herself up uglily during a EQ interview and that could be a really big waste for such beautiful gal like her.

  17. From these pictures and profiles alone, I think Hilary Tam is the best candidate. She exudes confidence and elegance in her picture and maturity in her profile. She also looks a lot like Chinese actress Liu Tao!

  18. Xaviera Yau will definitely get placed on the final night. Beautiful

    1. I agree with you that she’s a definitely beautiful gal with a quite obviously very unique & cheerful personality providing that she doesn’t smile with her mouth opens…..

I wouldn’t mind if she doesn’t smile but frankly one of her tooth is crooked and will definitely annoy me big time if she opens her mouth.

I think maybe because she blows too much of a guy’s “ice cream” after brushing teeth every night. No wonder her teeth damage fast and could end up like that.

Better pay attention to teeth hygiene/management at night!

  19. what’s happening to the beautiful girls in hong kong these days? can’t seem to find beauties like those days like michelle reis, charmaine, ada, kenix, anita yuen and many more.

  20. in these pictures overall most of them are slightly better than last years’ (face wise) but ALL their bodies are soooo bad. Look at the bikini pictures on tvb website…all of their tummy are so FAT.

    1. Sure, looking beautiful and flawless is what a beauty pageant winner is suppose to have, hence the “beauty” part. However, I have to disagree with you on the “FAT” part. What defines being fat? Weighing more than 125 pounds? I think that their bodies are realistic and not some plastic model that has only skin and bones. I just hope one day we can see a plus size Miss Hong Kong. Now that would be interesting.

      1. Okay I take the word “FAT” back. It was carelessly used. What I meant was, their bodies show that they don’t excercise at all. What happened to toned bodies? Compare them to Miss USA or something…all of the contestants on Miss USA are FIT, but you can totally see that pretty much all of the Miss HK contestants are untoned and need more exercise.

      2. I don’t see anything wrong with have meat on their body. Look at singer BEYONCE, she is definately NOT thin. She got ass and boobs, she in fact very rounded body woman, yet she still HOT! And Mariah Carey, fully rounded woman, yet HOT!
Liu Tao is also not thin, yet still look good. Being too thin is not good you know, nor does being too fat. But at least have meat on your body, average is the best in everything.

      3. Toned body is not an in word in HK, ever. If a body is toned, the poor lady is called fat. If she is flabby, she is called fat. If she is flat chested and exceedingly thin, then she is called thin.

      4. I’d say in asia, if a lady has a toned body.. ppl will called her “muscular”? In asia, esp chinese girls..they prefer someone who has lighter skin tone with slim body but if the gal has nice boobs and butt..then tat’s consider bonus hehe.

    2. The girls are FAT? There are more ribs there than at a full weekend ribfest! Some of these girls could stand to use a few pounds to be honest. Why is it that in Asia a girl must be skeletal to be beautiful? What ever happened to being in proportion?

      1. Yes, there are ribs. But below those ribs is extra fat that just looks plain unhealthy and unfit. It has nothing to do with being skinny. I’m looking for proper proportions.

Here is a recent article in Chinese to prove my point: http://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/entertainment/20120617/00282_001.html

Here are 2 pictures of two of the miss hk sucking in their fat stomach. No way in hell someone’s stomach is concaved in like that. Pic1: http://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/entertainment/20120617/photo/0617-00282-001b2.jpg?t=1340172304965

      3. Hmm I suppose most asian girls just want to be thin and not toned since it requires regular exercises.

So what if they have fat in their stomach? It’s not directly unhealthy as you suggest.

Actually the stomach is the hardest body part to train. You need to eat a healthy diet and do some hard-core cardio exercises to get results! Sit-ups won’t do.

    3. You say fat, I say slim. I feel fat is such an overabused word these days.

  21. those girls look stunning in simple white T. Glad my fav Wingto, Melanie and Jacqueline are still in 🙂

    1. i’m gonna watch MHK this year, i have missed the last couple of year because it was boring and the girls wasn’t pretty.

  22. From these “studio” photos alone; Christy stood out. Her hair and expression are different from the rest.

However there’s much more to judge for the real competition..and I might not even be watching 😉

    1. No need to watch. When they win or lose or whatever, you will get to see them, inexperience and all in other hosting shows, travel shows or lucky ones, TV series (unlucky for us though). You know Kenneth’s On Call 36 Hours? You graduate and suddenly pushed into 36 hour shifts as trainee doctors? Sometimes I feel TVB can make a TV series about the lives of new actresses and call it On Call 23 hours and a half. The Half hour is for sleep.

      1. Funn, I personally believe that a TxB actor/actress at least have to go through that On Call 23 hours for a decade more or less..

If they passed the decade long trial; they might find outside opportunity waiting for them(films, mainland dramas) and get higher pay, more personal says, more endorsements (but schedule still uncertain)…

        else,

didn’t manage to “pass-through”, stuck at “supporting-artiste” waiting for that “golden-chance” to come and strike a Chai-Gau phenomenon…

PS: Ah but female artistes can always opt for marriage and a quiet life as a housewife…applicable for male artistes too, if they manage to find the “Joel-Chan” route..haha

  23. Funny ….. all the girls look better and prettier in the above photos. There are quite a few good good ones.

  24. after browsing their pics in tvb.com, I salute the photoshopper here to make them appear prettier in this set of photoshop pics than outdoor pics LOL

  25. Hilary Tam, future TVB employee. She didn’t come to HK to finish last, top 3, or she got bosses mad at TVB.
