2012 Miss Hong Kong: 16 Candidates Survive Elimination Round

Incorporating reality TV elements of eliminating candidates, the excitement of the 2012 Miss Hong Kong Pageant was gaining traction! Online polls revealed that Kent Tong’s (湯鎮業 )  niece, #28 Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯) was currently voted as the hottest contestant by male netizens! Meanwhile, #5 Kayley Chung (號鍾麗) and her boyfriend’s naked bathing photos have surfaced online, becoming the first scandal-ridden Miss Hong Kong contestant this year.

Surviving two recent elimination rounds on June 2nd and June 7th, 16 candidates remained in the 2012 Miss Hong Kong Pageant. The 16 women will be flying to Great Britain on June 12th to film a special travel segment for the pageant.

Kayley Chung’s Naked Photos Surface

Although #5 Kayley Chung had survived the last two elimination rounds, her Miss Hong Kong dreams were now in danger. Yesterday, Apple Daily discovered 26-year-old Kayley and her boyfriend’s naked photos online. The couple took the photos inside a hotel bathroom while vacationing in Thailand. Kayley was submerged in soapy bath water, while her boyfriend, Man Yu sat naked by her side.

Kayley’s boyfriend, Man, pointed the camera towards the bathroom mirror. Fortunately, he remembered to use the sink faucet to obstruct the exposure of his groin area in the photo.

In recent years, questionable photos of Miss Hong Kong pageants were often unearthed by the press in an effort to expose the scandalous pasts of the contestants. During the 2011 Miss Hong Kong Pageant, Whitney Hui (許亦妮) and Gemma Choi’s (蔡慧欣) partying photos–featuring them intimately embracing male friends–had surfaced online. Kayley Chung’s naked bathing photos were the most compromising in recent years.

The 2012 Miss Hong Kong Pageant finals will take place on Sunday, August 26, 2012. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the pageant.

Jayne: Are your favorite candidates still in the race? Based on the latest batch of photos, I think Hilary Tam and Roxanne Tong might have the charisma to win the title. Personally, I find Melanie McAndrew’s features to be the most memorable, although her nose bridge may be slightly high. She reminds me of a young Carmen Lee, very exotic looks. Good luck to Melanie!

Wong Jing Ridicules Poor Quality of 2012 Miss Hong Kong Contestants

Despite TVB’s grand plans in marketing the 40th Anniversary of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant this year, the 14 contestants have come under fire as being poor in quality. When the bikini photos of the contestants were unveiled earlier this week, Hong Kong tabloids criticized the contestants for their flat chests and flabby abdomens. Director Wong Jing (王晶) blasted TVB, “If there are no [hot] women, then do not organize the pageant!”

Responses

  1. So glad Hilary & Roxanne got through, as they were my choices in the previous pic! I agree with you Jayne, they indeed have charisma. Good luck Hilary & Roxanne!

  2. I am glad that Wingto got through. I like Hilary Tam too and she may be a hot favorite to win. I think Roxanne is ok,but IF she does win. I honestly would wonder is it because of her connections since her father and uncle are both established actors?? Lets see… If she doesn’t get first, she may at least get into the top 5 or maybe win 2nd or 3rd. Lets see and good luck to all of the contestants.

    1. I’ve a feeling that having ‘connection’ with TVb does help alot especially Kent tong was and still a recognized male artist. btw, do u think Roxanne may have had plastic surgeries before or not?

I agree with you that Carat cheung looks plastic..

      1. I think Roxanne probably had plastic surgery, but it may not be as dramatic like Serena or Viann for example. Therefore, she does not look as plastic. I am shocked that they have not gotten rid of Carat yet since she really looks too plastic… I agree that the TVB connections will help since her uncle, Kent Tong, was and is still a recognized artist.

    2. Hilary Tam won Miss Chinese Toronto and was in MCI last year.. I’m surprised they allowed her to do Miss HK for this year…

    3. i think roxanne tong will win because of connections! connections always wins when it comes to hong kong.normal people like you and i will never get a chance because we are not born into the right background with the right ‘face’.

roxanne lied to everyone about her plastic surgery. her nose looks SO DIFFERENT. if she just told the truth then no problems. wait till more pictures come out… what a liar!!!!

  3. I am shocked that Carat got through and has made it this far. Her looks are way too plastic looking to me.

    1. Is it just me or does she have this “mainland” look about her…? Too many people are going for PS these days. Mainland China is catching up with Korea at this rate.

  4. Melanie McAndrew is mixed so of course her features would stand out more. She may go pretty far in the pageant but lets see.

  5. I personally like the looks of Wingto Lam, so I hope that she will stay in the race 😀

    1. Wingto has a friendly face that can fit as a TVB actress 🙂

  6. I also like Roxanne and Hilary, hopefully we’ll see them in the Top 3 🙂 I wish they would post the videos of how the contestants got eliminated, it’s weird how 9 contestants get cut on one day and 4 more the next day.

  7. I’m very happy that Tracy Chu is still in. She’s my favourite based on the pictures of Ms HK contestants I’ve seen so far.

    1. Tracy Chu looks sort of like one of my cousins…

  8. That’s why never do stupid things with your boyfriend!

    Anyway…

“Incorporating reality TV elements of eliminating candidates”

I wonder, will that include crying, bi*ching about someone else like those reality TV or just TVB’s version of reality TV?

I don’t feel any of them is pretty in beauty pageant sense. But since this is new recruit drive disguised as beauty pageant, I do quite like the loom of Christy Chan who reminds me of Jaqueline Law (and she has short hair! refreshing!). Roxanne Tong is ok but her looks is dime a dozen in TVB. Tracy Chu has a sweet smile.

But whoever it may be, I pray they can at least act a little or sound ok. So far I have yet to come across a Miss HK candidate with a lovely actor’s voice.

    1. I like Christy Chan too. I think Christy and Wingto has looks that can fit as TVB actresses

  9. Jayne,

Melanie McAndrew look more like Michelle Saram. She looks too much like a foreigner to me though. I don’t see good things in acting career. I actually find Christy Chan’s face very memorable and one I would like to see on TV.

    1. Funn,
Christy Chan looks like Jacqueline Law as you had mentioned before. Christy is okay, but if given a different hairstyle her face would probably shine more. The bangs are a bit too heavy, don’t you think?

      1. Iy gives her a whimsical youthful ordinary girl next door look which I find is moldable as an actress. I think it is her hairstyle that makes me notice her, amongst all those long haired, no bangs, etc.

  10. Im still saying this year’s ladies is not up to par with the last year’s contestants looks.

    I will wait and see…

  11. The more I seen their pics the more I think Roxanne isn’t that pretty compared to other contestants. Maybe those guy voters think differently.

  12. Glad that Hilary Tam made it in the elimination round. Hope she will get to the top 3.

Surprised that Jenny Leung did not get in. She looked pretty in her photo. Perhaps she did not look pretty in person.

  13. Typo Jayne. Kayley’s Chinese name is 鍾麗 not 號鍾麗

Those top 2 pictures are quite pretty.

I can’t help but notice they look like celebrities already.
Tracy Chu looks like Michelle Ye
Gloria Chan looks like Rose Chan.
Carat Chan looks like a cross between Tina Tse (Michael Tse’s wife) and Renee Dai.
Jennifer Shum looks like Cissy Wang (Donnie Yen’s wife)

  14. Jacqueline and Melanie are my fav! finger cross for them. Roxanne remind me of those korean plastic celeb.

    1. Agreed! I love Jacqueline and Melanie. Jacqueline has a charming smile while Melanie’s features are very special.

  15. Ehh, does it means that winning MissHK equals acting contract with TVB?

    1. In the past it used to be no. 2 and especially no. 3 are to be groomed to be actresses as no. 1 can take 1 year off to promote the miss hk stuff and then go into acting. Nowadays not quite so but usually 1,2,3 and some top 10 or so are offered acting contracts whilst some others do get picked by rich guys as wives.

  16. You know, I often heard all these Miss Hks and actresses go “My mummy and I” and all that mummy talk, I wonder are they that close to their mothers?

Anyway the qualities I look for in a Miss Hk which is exceedingly rare is intelligence, some talent, good talking voice and above all, a certain sense of elegance. All these can translate well into a potentially good acting career. Haven’t heard any of these talked yet but if I hear one with not so good cantonese, to me FAIL!!

    1. Hmm does the contestants lack intelligence? Perhaps TVB doesn’t like their constestants too intelligent bc it will be difficult to play the puppet, LOL.

Agree, don’t even need to be very intelligent, but just able to use common sense.

    2. I don’t think “intelligence” is a No. 1 criteria in choosing any Miss (Hong Kong, Universe, or World). The top criteria is prettiness, then speaking skills, then personalities. Some talents (such as acting, singing, dancing, etc.) will be required.

    3. I have seen that some mention their fathers too which is good since dads don’t seem to get as much credit as mom.

  17. I think this year’s miss HK has stepped up in game 🙂

  18. This year the girls look better than last year. And some are ready for the ent. industry from now. Melanie McAndrew, I guess she can be in top 5 or even top 3, but I doubt she will crown. She is a mix and it can be the reason why.

  19. #4 Tracy Chu & #28 Roxanne Tong looks good chance of getting top 3.

#19 Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎) looks like a dark horse in the the competition. I like her smile in the picture.

#27 Melanie McAndrew (李渼琦) look gorgeous, but I doubt TVB will let her win if she has no desire working in TVB (signing long contract). But I think she will be in Top 5.

But then again, based on picture. We’ll have to see how they carry themselves, especially when they speak.

  20. My Choice
    1. Roxanne Tong
    2. Xaviera Yau ( Miss Photogenic )
    3. Melanie

  21. I think Hilary Tam and Christy Chan are my current favorites to win. Both I think have good presence. Gloria Chan is also cute though. I this year’s contestants are better than the previous years.

  22. So gutted that there is no Mr Hong Kong this year!

  23. My top five, in random order, would be Tracy Chu, Gloria Chan, Wingto Lam, Melanie McAndrew, and Jacqueline Wong.

  24. Glad to see Penelope still there… although hopefully she’ll continue to wear her hair down. That’s not a flattering picture of her there.

    1. Yeah, agree she looks so much better with her hair down.

Still the most natural and elegant one.

  25. Since this year is the 40th anniversary, I really wonder if they have more special crowns made and a nice pin just like the 20th anniversary in 1992 when Emily Lo won? It would be great if they did and winning during an anniversary year makes things extra special.

  26. I like Melenie McAndrew. She’s the prettiest in the batch, imo.

  27. Christy Chan’s look stands out a lot.
    Xaviera Yau has cute dimples.
Jacqueline Wong has a beautiful smile.
Wingto, Roxanne and Melanie should go far if they do not mess up.
    Do not like the rest.

  28. I don’t know but I don’t like Hilary’s face that much and she’s been in the pageant WAYYYY too many times, make it seems like she is desperate for the crown.

So i really support the new comers especially Melenie and Gloria
