Filming for TVB drama The Gatekeepers <把關者們> has been underway since January, with cast members Carlos Chan (陳家樂), Karl Ting (丁子朗), Moon Lau (劉佩玥), and Tiffany Lau (劉穎鏇) gathering to film an indoor basketball scene last earlier.
The scenes have been testing Carlos’ physical stamina, as he was required to play basketball and go hiking. Originally, Carlos and Karl had a scene where they would be underwater but the director ultimately cut the scene and urged the young actors to save their energy for other physically-demanding scenes.
Carlos said, “It doesn’t look like I’ll have the opportunity to experience swimming in the ocean during a cold day! When it comes to basketball, I’m really not very good. On the other hand, Tiffany is a pro! She saw that I was having issues with my form, so she was very helpful in teaching and guiding me. I even shot a three-pointer for the second time in my life!”
Despite growing up in Canada, Karl has not played much basketball either as he confessed, “When I was younger, I was very skinny and sickly. My mother was always afraid that I would get hurt, and wouldn’t let me play [contact sports]. Even now, I had to drink protein shakes to gain weight.”
It turns out that Tiffany is indeed the most experienced basketball player in the group, as she has been playing since six years old. Although Carlos and Karl both have little experience with the sport, Tiffany was full of praises for their quick learning. “They just started learning how to play today. Their form looks great! The scenes came out looking quite believable, as if they really are good players. In the drama, I portray a character who is very physically weak so I was just in the scene as a cheerleader.”
Also breaking out of her usual sweet girl persona onscreen, Moon portrays a mother for the first time in The Gatekeepers. “I’ve realized that a mother must consider a lot of things before having a child. Portraying this character really made me think more about a lot of things.” Moon grew close to the child actor who portrays her son in the drama, “We’ve agreed to keep in touch after filming ends ,and that I’ll take him to a theme park!”
