Crystal Fung On Being Shelved & Breaking Up

Addressing long-running rumors that she had been frozen years back when she turned down the work opportunity to film Night Beauties <一舞傾城> in mainland China two years ago, actress Crystal Fung (馮盈盈) shared her thoughts! Acknowledging this had happened during the pandemic, the Miss Hong Kong 2016 explained that as a family member of her had not been well, she felt that it was “difficult” for her to leave Hong Kong while worrying about her family, on top of her own concerns that she was not ready to handle the “major” role offered.

Surprising everyone by hitting 20 points rating for its finale episode despite a slow start, netizens praised the Crystal and Karl Ting-led (丁子朗) drama You Are Not Her <妳不是她> for being more enjoyable than TVB anniversary drama Romeo and His Butterfly Lover <羅密歐與祝英台>.

No Regrets Taking Part in Miss HK Contest Despite Breakup

Open about being in a relationship when she was competing in the pageant, Crystal shared that it was in fact her former boyfriend at university, Martin Chung (鍾文浩) who had encouraged her to take part. Despite already in the co-habiting stage, the couple ended their four-year romance, which was rumored to be in part due to Crystal’s intimate scene in The Man Who Kills Troubles <解決師> with her co-star, actor Jonathan Cheung (張頴康). Denying this, Crystal said, “It wasn’t! Rather, I was hesitant about that scene as it was my first time doing an intimate scene, so I was very nervous and shy about it,”

Attributing the breakup to tension from her entertainment career, Crystal explains, “Before entering the industry I was more naïve and simple-minded, and thought it’d be good to just be open about (the relationship), which could also give my other half more security, but slowly, I realized that it brought him unwanted attention and pressure, such as from his colleagues, family and friend; while I was prepared for these, as someone outside the industry he didn’t need to put up with all these, so that then led to conflicts,”

When asked if she would still choose to participate in Miss Hong Kong contest if given a second chance, she replied with conviction, “Yes! Because I really like who I am right now, and all the work that I do!”

Since becoming single, Crystal was often labeled as “materialistic” as she was seen moving into a bigger house, and owning branded bags. “Moving house is because I want to move back in with my family, as for branded bags, they’re what I bought to reward myself as career motivation,” the actress said.
