Da Ya Wanted to End Her Life During Blackie Chen’s Lawsuit

Last year, when Taiwanese actress Da Ya (周宜霈) accused Blackie Chen (陳建州) of sexual harassment, he quickly responded with a lawsuit. Blackie had sued for 10 million new Taiwan dollars in compensation before pressing for criminal charges. In January of this year, the court ruled they would not be prosecuting Da Ya.

The case in Taiwan is now closed, but it is still in process in Hong Kong. After being sued by Blackie, Da Ya travelled to Hong Kong to file a report as the sexual harassment incident occurred there 11 years ago during a work trip together.

Dealing with the litigation and paying exorbitant fees, Da Ya hit the lowest point in her life and dropped significant weight. She felt like collapsing and thought of ending her life. “What if I lose? How will I pay the compensation? I felt unjust that I was accused of lying. Where should I go to end my life?”

During her depression, Da Ya felt she had hurt her husband and their marriage was the wrong decision. When her husband learned of her thoughts, he said, “How can you be so irresponsible? Wouldn’t this just make Blackie happy?” With his support, Da Ya realized her thoughts were unhealthy and quickly sought mental health support.

Da Ya’s doctor told her, “Thank you, you are a good person–it’ll be okay.” She burst into tears after hearing this, “I felt the situation was so ridiculous. I was only doing what I feel was right. It wasn’t doing anything great. Every day, I had to deal with these emotions and it was really hard to live during that time.”
